Not everyone needs or can afford the latest, most powerful laptop. For simple tasks, such as running web-based apps or sending an email, a low-powered, low-priced laptop fits the bill. That’s where budget laptops come in.
Budget laptops often come with small drive space, low memory, and slow processors. You won’t be able to use them to run the latest graphics—heavy computer games, but for giving your kids access to the web, sending a teen off to college with a computer for their, studies or for you to stay up-to-date with Facebook, a budget laptop could be an ideal purchase.
Our top pick is the HP Envy x360 15z, a 2-in-1 laptop with high quality and smart performance that can be found for under $700 and competes with laptops that cost twice as much. Many of our picks are even more affordable.
These are the best budget laptops we tested, ranked in order:
●HP Envy x360 15z

For years, Kris celebrated Valentine’s Day with her husband, Paul. But this year’s Valentine’s Day may be the most eventful one yet. That’s because it is their 25th as husband and wife, a landmark that would be meaningful for most couples but is extraordinary for them. They were both born with Down syndrome (唐氏综合症) and are believed to be the longest-married couple with the condition in the country.
This year’s Valentine’s Day is the first on which they won’t be living together.
Paul, 54, is dealing with early-stage dementia (痴呆). Several months ago, the state moved him into a community residence with special nursing care. The couple was disappointed but not daunted. Kris visits Paul regularly, and they spend weekends together at the community residence, where Kris still cooks for her husband.
The ongoing effort to keep them together reminds Paul’s mother, of all the obstacles they have overcome. She remembered how some doctors told her not to expect much when Paul was born. Instead, he grew up to live a successful life that included a marriage lasting a quarter century.
Kris has had her struggles too. Then and now, she still encounters the occasional stranger who laughs at her abnormal behavior. The truth is that those people have no idea how rich and rewarding her life is. They cannot see the commitment that lasts after 25 years, and is still very fresh today “to have and to hold, in sickness and in health.” And they cannot see how, as Kris sits in her own living room recalling those vows (誓言) from her wedding day, she is surrounded by photos of herself with the man who changed her life.
4. Why is this Valentine Day so extraordinary for Paul and Kris?
A. Because their health conditions become worse.
B. Because they won’t be living together since the day.
C. Because they are the longest-married couple in the country.
D. Because the couple of Down syndrome has a 25-year marriage.
5. What does the underlined word “daunted” mean in the third paragraph?
A. Discouraged. B. Scared. C. Excited. D. Embarrassed.
6. What is the purpose of the fourth paragraph?
A. To Emphasize Paul’s depending on Kris.
B. To stress struggles Paul experienced.
C. To highlight the influence of Paul’s mother.
D. To show Paul’s understanding towards life.
7. What may impress the author most from the text?
A. Kris’ care of her husband.
B. The support from Paul’s mother.
C. Paul and Kris’ sufferings from diseases.
D. Paul and Kris’ commitment to marriage.

Black and white mountains and rocks covered in colorful mist—the combination of Chinese and Western painting styles—attracts Michela Millstein at an art exhibition in San Francisco.
“I think there are a lot of meanings behind the paintings. You can tell that it’s trying to show cultural things and not just a picture,” Millstein says. Having studied Chinese for three years, Millstein, a high school student in the San Francisco Bay Area, says she loves Chinese culture.
The exhibition, The Flying Colors, presented more than 60 pieces of Chinese ink paintings by a local artist, Arthur Ku, at San Francisco City Hall recently.
“Arthur Ku is a well-known painter, calligrapher, and artist; his endless devotion to the art community has undoubtedly contributed to the vitality (活力) of San Francisco,” the mayor said in the announcement.
Ku was born in Guangdong province in 1941 and settled down in the United States in 1977. He has been exploring the “splash ink and color” style, which is a technique of working with splashy (泼墨), colorful washes to create an abstract, expressive style. Ku’s artistic talent in traditional Chinese brush and ink painting inspired a unique style of down-to-earth and creative freedom, which created a critical attempt of traditional Chinese brush painting into modern and contemporary art, according to mayor’s statement.
Ku is also keen to promote cultural and artistic exchanges between China and the US to improve art and friendship. He has successfully held several joint painting exhibitions in the US for artists from China.
“I think inclusiveness brings unity and diversity brings vitality. We are now living in the most challenging times. So, I think it’s important for us to embrace more inclusiveness and diversity, to have more cultural dialogue, so that we can communicate better and respect each other more.” said Arthur Ku.
8. What can we learn from Millstein’s words in paragraph 2?
A. The exhibition held recently.
B. The beauty of artistic works.
C The passion for artistic works.
D. The cultural significance of the works
9. What does the mayor probably think of Ku’s painting?
A. Innovative. B. Traditional. C. Costly. D. Inimitable.
10. Why did Ku hold painting exhibitions in the US?
A. To promote cultural and artistic exchanges.
B. To found an international charity organisation.
C. To enhance the reputation of some Chinese artists.
D. To introduce the history of Chinese traditional arts.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The learning process of a Chinese artist.
B. An artist furthering cultural communication.
C. The guidance on communicating and respecting.
D. An art exhibition held at San Francisco City Hall.

Faking (假的) sickness is about to get harder. Trying to take a day off work by nervously coughing down the phone to your boss might no longer live up to your expectations. Very soon your company might be able to tell whether or not your symptoms are real, just from the sound of your voice.
As anyone has woken up with a runny nose and a sore throat, infection with the common cold virus change how a person’s voice sounds. That is because the tissue in vocal cord (声带) temporarily swells (肿胀) and, therefore, shakes at a lower pitch (音阶), which tends to make people with a cold develop a deeper voice.
A research team in Surat India, tried to find exactly how a “cold voice” differs from a healthy voice. Their research makes use of the fact that human speech does not produce single frequencies of sounds. The dominant notes in the human voice are instead accompanied by a series of higher pitched tones.
Together these sets of notes fit into mathematical patterns called harmonics (和声), with higher pitched tones having frequencies that are multiples of the original note. The loudness of these harmonics in speech has to do with the frequency scale.
To find out how infection with a cold might change the frequency, the scientists made use of an unusual resource: recordings of the voices of 630 people in Germany, 111 of whom were suffering from a cold. Each was asked to count from 1 to 40 and describe what they did at the weekend.
By breaking down each person’s speech into component wave lengths, the researchers could identify the dominant frequency in each case. They then used machine-learning calculation to find frequency changing patterns that could distinguish the cold voices from the healthy voices.
The Indian team’s diagnosis (诊断) of cold voice is not fully reliable. The results show it can correctly diagnose a cold up to around 70% of the time. Faced with another scary Monday at the office, would you take the risk?
12 What is the function of Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic of the passage.
B. To warn readers not to pretend to be sick.
C. To provide the background of the research.
D. To stress the development of scientific technology.
13. Why does a person with a cold have a different voice?
A. Swollen vocal cord produces lower pitched tones.
B. They produce deeper voices to protect vocal cord.
C. Their voices are from deeper part than normal ones.
D. A runny nose and a sore throat change some sounds.
14. How did the research team do their research?
A. By applying a method to changing voice frequencies.
B. By identify the frequency of high pitched tones.
C. By observing the voices of 630 people chosen.
D. By referring to the data of wave length.
15. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Taking Sick Leave will be Risky
B. A Voice from a Real Cold or not
C. Voice Changes Might Cure a Cold
D. An AI Distinguisher of Voices

Working from home has its advantages, but a sense of community is not one of them. Still, feeling connected at work is necessary for our success in our jobs and lives. Research finds that people with friends at work are more satisfied with and perform better at their jobs. ____16____
Schedule an informal meeting just to chat.
You can’t build a friendship if you only ever talk about work. One study found that while people feel closer the more time they spend together, this wasn’t true at work. ____17____ This is likely because when we only focus on work, we don’t reveal anything about ourselves. If you want to make friends at work, stop talking about work.
____18____
Friendship is not built from one interaction; it grows gradually. We unconsciously like those we are more exposed to. The best way to do this is to put a standing meeting on your calendar, perhaps once a week or once a month, depending on preference.
Share more of yourself.
Now that you have stopped talking about work, start sharing stories. Study shows that people like people who share details about themselves. ____19____ Use interesting questions to get to know your co-workers. Some good options are: What do you do for fun? What were you like in high school?

Pansy Takes a Trip
Very excited, Anika hugged her favorite doll tight as she followed her parents through the airport. It was going to be her first time on an airplane. When she walked down the narrow aisle (走廊、过道) of the plane to find her seat, a tall flight attendant (服务人员) smiled at her and asked where they were going. “Walt Disney World,” Anika said with a smile, “We’ll be there for a week.”
“Have a wonderful trip,” replied the flight attendant, pointing to her name tag (名签), “I’m Leanne. You let me know if you and your pretty doll friend need anything.”
“Thanks. I’m Anika, and this is Pansy,” said Anika, holding the doll up to show her, “Do you fly to Disney World every day?”
Leanne shook her head. “I get to fly all over the world. It can be fun to explore new places.”
The flight was going to be a few hours. Anika read a book with Pansy and did some puzzles her mother had packed for the trip. Soon she was getting a little tired and asked Leanne for a pillow (枕头). The flight attendant returned with a pillow, a blanket, and a sleep mask to cover her eyes. Anika tucked Pansy under the blanket with her and fell asleep quickly. In no time, it seemed, she was being woken up again because it was time to land. They had arrived!
“Already?” yawned (打哈欠) Anika. She wasn’t quite awake yet. Her parents were busily packing up their bags and jackets, ready to leave the plane. Leanne walked past them, collecting the pillows and blankets from passengers as she went.
“Now you will have lots of energy to enjoy your visit to Disney World!” She smiled to Anika. “I will see you next week on your return flight home.”
Anika was delighted to be in the new city. When her family got to the hotel, she couldn’t wait to bring Pansy along to see all the amazing sights with her. She looked around, but she couldn’t find her doll.
She searched through the bags and jackets, but Pansy was nowhere to be found.

A Date with the National Treasure
Last weekend witnessed our trip to the Panda House.
With the guidance of the zookeepers, we cut and harvested bamboo to prepare meals for the pandas for about an hour. The highlight of the day came when we eagerly helped milk baby pandas. So fragile were they that we had to be very careful in case not to hurt them. The activity is highly thought of. Not only does it enrich our knowledge, but it also raises our awareness to protect pandas.
As an endangered species, pandas are in desperate need of protection. It’s high time that we spared no effort to protect them.
47. One possible version:
She searched through the bags and jackets, but Pansy was nowhere to be found. On thinking Pansy might have been left behind along the way, Anika burst into tears. Seeing this, her parents comforted that Pansy might turn up somewhere when they visited Disney World. There seemed to be no better choice after all. Anika went to Disney World, enjoying all the fantastic views, but when she boarded the flight back a week later, she was missing Pansy in her deep heart. It is when she walked down the narrow aisle that she saw Leanne smiling, reaching a doll to her. That was Pansy!
Hugging Pansy tight again, Anika felt even more excited than she was on vacation last week. Leanne told Anika she found Pansy in the blanket and took Pansy to fly around the world along with her. “She visited many beautiful places and couldn’t wait to tell you all that she saw.” Leanne gently patted Anika’s hair, “but never leave her alone again, for she is missing you so much.” Grateful and happy, Anika nodded, “Thank you for giving Pansy such a good trip.” and she thought to herself that she would take all her trips with Pansy in the future.
