Joseph Lister, born in 1827 in England, was best known as a popular British surgeon and a pioneer of antiseptic(抗菌的) surgery. As a child, Lister attended a Quaker school, where he became very fluent in French and German. These two languages were the leading languages in medical research.
He later entered University College London. At first, he studied botany(植物学). After this, he became a registered medical student and managed to graduate with honors. At 26, he entered the Royal College of Surgeons. Lister became an assistant of James Syme, a surgeon at a university in Scotland.
In 1867, he invented the use of carbolic acid as antiseptic. This became the first widely used antiseptic in surgery. Before Lister's research, many people believed chemical damage from exposures to bad air was the reason behind the infections in wounds. During this time, hospitals were at times letting air out during midday in order to prevent the spread on infec-tions. However, hospitals also practiced surgery under some unsanitary conditions compared with present medical conditions, which exposed patients to great risks.
While at University of Glasgow, Lister heard about Louis Pasteur's theory. Louis Pas-teur suggested 3 methods to fight the micro-organism, filtration(过滤), exposure to chemical solutions and exposure to heat. Lister confirmed Pasteur's theory with his own experiments. He decided to use these findings to create some antiseptic techniques for wounds, which led to the reduction in post-operative infections, making surgery safe for patients. He published his findings in The Lancet.
In 1881, Lister moved to London where he was appointed president of Clinical Society of London and died in 1892.

Smart carts(购物车) are shopping carts equipped with table t computers and similar de-vices that help shoppers manage shopping lists, pay for items, and find products in the store.Manufacturers of smart cart technology produce accessory fittings(配件), and stores can use them to remake existing carts. It's also possible to purchase new shopping carts with the smart technology installed.
The level of function available with a smart cart can vary. Some can be combined with cell phones or software programs to allow shoppers to create shopping lists and upload them to a cart. Internet-enabled smart carts may provide suggestions or tips for shoppers. Some can communicate with the systems to guide themselves around the store. Shoppers can ask the cart where to find items, or have it organıze a grocery list to make shopping easier. As a shop-per moves along the snack selling areas, for instance, the smart cart could flash a reminder that the customer often likes to buy a particular brand of potato chips.
In-store communication to allow customers to order items from different counters may al-so be available. On the contrary, a department can page a customer with the use of smart carts. The counters can send a message when the order is ready, which reduces time spent in line.
Smart cart technology can also enable the price checks and allows customers to pay for items through the cart, without having to go through a checkout line. As they add items to the cart, it updates the total, and the shopper can close out the visit at the end by telling the cart to automatically pay from a stored bank account or credit card. This application for smart carts can be important in busy stores where customers get impatient waiting in line to pay.

The first step in writing any poem is coming up with something to write about. Don't feel that you have to choose deep or attractive material. Anything can be the subject for a poem.Great poems have been written about such topics as a gas station or pieces of broken glass on the beach.
It's easiest to write a good poem about something you know well, that you have experi-enced first-hand, or that you have nearby so that you can observe it carefully. This is because what makes the poem deep and interesting will be the hidden details or qualities you discover,or the subject that reminds you of the unique view.
In his book Poetry in the Making, the poet Ted Hughes talks about how to write a poem about an animal. The key, he says, is to concentrate hard enough on the animal, to choose the words that best catch the animal you have in your mind. You can use this approach with any subject matter.
In the beginning, you don't have to worry about the“style” or writing in a“poetic”way that means being filled with rhythm and beauty. In fact, if you start to think about“being po-etic”, it can puzzle you from what you're actually writing about and hurt your poem. Have you ever tried to have a conversation with someone who was trying to impress you? Then you know how boring this can be. The person is really thinking about himself or herself, not about the conversation. Similarly, if you are worrying about what impression your poem will make, then that takes your attention away from the subject of your poem.
In a word, if the poem is about you or your life, try to take the angle of a careful reporter when you write it down. You should focus on accurately communicating an aspect of your experience, instead of focusing on what impression you are making when you do it.
32. What will be an easy subject for writing a good poem?
A. Something beautiful.
B. Something interesting.
C. Something happened to you or near you.
D. Something others have experienced before.
33. What can we infer about Ted Hughes’ opinion on writing a poem?
A. It is difficult to write a poem about animals.
B. It is important to choose a good topic.
C. It is necessary to focus on the style of poems.
D. It is necessary to select the words.
34. Why does the author give the example in paragraph 4?
A. To make a further explanation.
B. To draw the readers' attention.
C. To answer the question mentioned above.
D. To raise a question for readers.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The impression of a good poem.
B. The influence on creating a poem.
C. The importance of selecting material.
D. The conclusion on methods of writing poems.

Music is a universal language, which touches the very depths of our soul. 36 Not on-ly can they have the opportunity to communicate universally, but also the opportunity to im-prove their brain health. Your brain will thank you for music training and music making for the following reasons.
Music training improves cognition (认知). Studies have shown that music training im-proves cognitive abilities across our life span. Playing an instrument requires many different areas of the brain to cooperate, so it strengthens the brain in a variety of ways. This allows for an increase in signal efficiency——how quickly neurons(神经元) communicate with each other across the brain. 37
Music training may promote healthy aging of the brain. Studies show that musicians have an advantage in maintaining their cognitive abilities during the aging process. This includes tasks that involve executive functioning and short-term memory. 38 For example, they are able to hear more clearly in the presence of background noise.
39 A recent study has shown that group musical activities are potential ways to main-tai n physical and psychological health. For example, a lowered risk of dementia(痴呆) has been associated with playing musical instruments. Other studies have shown that playing key-board instruments and drums could be helpful in stroke (中风) patients.
40 Although those who begin music training at a young age seem to display the grea-test benefits, research shows it is never too late to learn to play an instrument. More research is needed to more fully understand the effect of music making on the brain throughout life;this is something the National Institutes of Health has recognized.
A. Music training is a tiring activity.
B. Musicians are at a unique advantage.
C. Music training is beneficial for overall health.
D. Older musicians have other advantages as well.
E. In short, making music is truly a whole-brain workout.
F. And there are benefits from both long-term and short-term training.

Her name is Jean. She teaches first grade. She drove an old Volkswagen Jetta. As a sin-gle mother with one young son, she found that the car served her needs. It wasn't the speediest vehicle, but Jean was never late to work. In fact, each school day she was the first teacher to arrive and the last to leave.
Jean was devoted to her career. Parents in the neighborhood would beat down the principal’s (校长) door to have their children assigned to her class. All her students passed in-to second grade with advanced vocabularies and language skills. Needless to say, she was a gifted teacher.
One August, all the teachers returned from summer break to see Jean drive up to school with three children. Two girls in high school, who had lost their parents, found it was not very safe to live by themselves, so they remembered their first grade teacher, Jean, and asked Jean if they could live with her. Although Jean lived in a modest home with her son, she took the girls in.
Each day, even though Jean took her son and the two girls to school, she was still the first teacher in the school parking lot.
During lunch, while nearly all teachers but me exchanged life stories in the teachers’ of-fice, Jean never complained about her new responsibilities. She did, however, speak about her car. With three children to transport, the Jetta was too small. It burned oil. Jean needed a new and big car.
In the teachers’ office, Jean shared that a new car was not in her budget, especially with three children in her home. Like a good friend, I listened to her concerns. There was nothing that I could do. At the time, I was a young teacher who lived at home with my mother. I did not have any extra income. But in my heart I wanted to help Jean purchase a new car to ac-commodate her growing family.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

W:Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I'd phone to find out a bit more.
M:Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It's quite a new club——we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W:That sounds interesting. I'm British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I'm looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?
M:Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W:Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M:Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages——you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Mon-day——Spanish; Tuesday——Italian;Wednesday——German; and Friday——French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W:Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M:OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I'll send you the form and some more informa-tion. If you join now you can have the first month free.

Dear James,
It has been a long time since I heard from you last time. I'm eager to know how you are going now? Then, let me share something exciting with you.
There was a badminton competition held in my school last Saturday. As you know, badminton is my favor-ite sport, so I took part in the competition. 20 students from 15 classes were divided into 1 0 groups. The winner of each group came to the next round. Luckily, I won first prize.
I felt proud of myself for the result. It offered me a chance to strengthen the friendship with my classmates and learn from each other.
Yours,
Li Hua

I came up with an idea that I could write a TV station an email about it. One day during lunch, I did not go to the teachers’ office. Instead, I sat at my desk and wrote the email. I shared Jean’s story. I told the TV station that Jean's influence as an educator was so great that two high school girls remembered her kind spirit when they were faced with difficulties. Though her resources were limited, Jean tried her best to care for the girls as if they were her own.
Surprisingly, Jean was invited to attend a show at the TV station one month later. That day, a host called Jean to the stage. The host hugged Jean and explained he had received a letter expressing her need for a new car. Then the host announced that Jean would receive a new car for her family. Cheers filled the studio. Jean was speechless, but her tears expressed her gratitude. Six hundred miles away, I watched the joy of it all from the television in my living room.
