Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Statistically speaking, it is the largest waterfall in the world. Victoria Falls is located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The falls are also close to the border of Botswana. The Zambezi River, which originates in northern Zambia, serves as the falls’ water source.
There are basically two seasons for the Victoria Falls area. The rainy season runs from late November to early April with the remaining months accounting for the dry season. One would imagine that the rainy season with more water would make the falls more spectacular (壮观的), however, the additional water and subsequent mist(水汽) in the air makes it nearly impossible to see the base of the falls.
The months of June and July are probably the best time to view the falls. The water levels are still high enough to show the beauty of the falls, but the amount of water is less, creating less mist and more visibility of the falls.
As you move into the later part of the dry season, August through October, it is quite possible that you will see more rock face than falls. However, this also opens the door for walking across the top of the falls, which can be a unique and exhilarating experience as well.
During the rainy season and high water, Victoria Falls can be a challenge to capture (抓拍) with a camera because of all of the mist in the air. However, this increases the probabilities that you will be able to capture rainbow images around the falls.
The lower water levels can create more dramatic pictures with various rocks cropping out between the falls. You should also be able to see the canyon and base of the falls. You will also be able to walk across the top of the falls and take images down the face of the falls.
    8. Where does the water source of Victoria Falls originate?
    A. In northern Zambia. B. In southern Zimbabwe.
    C. At the border of Botswana. D. Between the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe.
    9. When is the best time for travelers to walk across the top of the falls?
    A. From November to April. B. From August to October.
    C. In the months of June and July. D. In the months of May and June.
    10. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 5 probably refer to?
    A. A camera. B. High water.
    C. The rainy season. D. All of the mist in the air.
    11. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
    A. Travel strategies at different water levels. B. Challenges for falls travelers to overcome.
    C. Photo opportunities in different seasons. D. Different views of the falls all the year round.
A 9. B 10. D 11. C

根据第四段“As you move into the later part of the dry season, August through October, it is quite possible that you will see more rock face than falls. However, this also opens the door for walking across the top of the falls, which can be a unique and exhilarating experience as well.(当你进入旱季的后期,8月到10月,你很可能会看到更多的岩石表面而不是瀑布。然而,这也为你打开了穿过瀑布顶部的大门,这也是一种独特而令人兴奋的体验)”可知,从8月到10月,你可以穿行过瀑布的顶部,这也是一份独特的令人兴奋的体验。故选B。
    【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“During the rainy season and high water, Victoria Falls can be a challenge to capture (抓拍) with a camera because of all of the mist in the air.(在雨季和高水位,维多利亚瀑布可能是一个挑战用相机捕捉,因为所有的雾在空气中)”及下文“increases the probabilities that you will be able to capture rainbow images around the falls(增加了你在瀑布周围捕捉到彩虹图像的可能性)”可知,所有的雾在空气中增加了你在瀑布周围捕捉到彩虹图像的可能性。故此处 this 指代的是all of the mist in the air。
根据倒数第二段“During the rainy season and high water, Victoria Falls can be a challenge to capture (抓拍) with a camera because of all of the mist in the air. You will also be able to walk across the top of the falls and take images down the face of the falls.(较低的水位可以创造出更引人注目的画面,各种各样的岩石出现在瀑布之间。你还可以看到峡谷和瀑布的底部。你还可以走过瀑布的顶部,沿着瀑布的表面拍照)”可知,文章最后两段主要讲述了在雨季与旱季旅行者的一些拍照机会。故选C。

The MacDowell Colony is one of the oldest and best known artist colonies in the country, located on 450 acres in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire. MacDowell’s mission (使命) is to nurture the arts by offering talented individuals an inspiring residential environment to produce enduring works of creative imagination.
MacDowell’s operations are funded by foundations, corporations and individuals. Writers, composers, photographers, filmmakers and sculptors — both famous and unknown — compete for the 32 free studios at the place. Once accepted, an artist can stay for as short as a couple of weeks, or as long as a couple of months.
When they arrive, artists find a kind of isolation (隔绝) hard to find in our world. There’s no phone. No fax. No friends. No family. It’s just a cabin in the snowy woods.
Writer Emily Raboteau lives in New York City. She came to MacDowell to work on a novel. She received a desk, chairs, pencil and paper. Another colony resident, Belfast composer Elaine Agnew, plays a piece called To a Wild Rose, written by Edward MacDowell. She says it’s so famous that every pianist in the world has played the tune. A hundred years ago, MacDowell owned the land where the colony no sits. He liked its isolation and his ability to get work done there. After his death, his wife, Marion, encouraged other artists to come.
And for the last century, artists have accepted the invitation, coming to step outside of their daily lives for a short time. Privacy is respected, but cooperation and discussion is common.
Screenwriter Kit Carson—who wrote Teras Chainsaw Massacre 2 and the film adaptation of Sam Shepberd’s play Paris, Terus-has visited MacDowell twice. He says that the interdisciplinary (学科间的) discussion there is valuable.
“You sit around at dinner, talking, and then somebody runs off and brings you back some stuff and shows it to you,” he says. “That, I didn’t realize, was part of the magic here because people are really open to show their opinions.”
    12. What does the underlined word “nurture” in the first paragraph probably mean?
    A. Teach. B. Support. C. Protect. D. Study.
    13. What can we infer about the MacDowell?
    A. It is open only to famous artists.
    B. The number of studios is changeable.
    C. It provides fax and some daily necessities.
    D. It’s special and different from everyday places.
    14. What does Kit Carson agree with?
    A. Privacy is important for everyone.
    B. Isolation can improve his speaking ability.
    C. Sharing different ideas is valuable.
    D. Writing behind closed doors is unnecessary.
    15. What can be the best title for the text!
    A. Lonely Creation B. The Value of the Art
    C. The World for Artists D. The Fashion of Isolation
B 13. D 14. C 15. C

根据第三段“When they arrive, artists find a kind of isolation(隔绝) hard to find in our world. There’s no phone. No fax. No friends. No family. It’s just a cabin in the snowy woods.(当他们到达时,艺术家们发现了一种在我们的世界里很难找到的隔绝。没有电话。没有传真。没有朋友。没有家人。这只是雪林中的小屋。)”可知,MacDowell是一个与现实世界不同的地方。故选D。
    【14题详解】

In many people’s eyes, plants are quiet and passive. They can’t talk. They can’t walk. ____16____.
Or can they? A new BBC documentary series, The Green Planet, gives us a new look at plants. Released on January 10 on Bilibili, it uncovers the wonderful and dramatic ways that plants behave.
Plants compete against each other to live. Each species has its own ways of defense. In rainforests, different kinds of plants race for sunlight. The forest floor is described as a “battlefield” in the series as only two percent of the sunlight filters (透过) through it. ____17____. But they are caught up in a vine (藤蔓) that tries to take a ride. Finally, they are both overtaken by a fast-growing balsa tree. As the balsa’s leaves are smooth, the vine can’t get a hold. Similarly, some trees make poisonous sap (毒汁) to protect themselves.
____18____. In deserts, the roots of Euphrates poplar are connected. If a tree finds water, it will share it with others through the roots. Studies also show that plants use fungus (真菌) in the soil as a way to “talk” to each other. It’s kind of like how Wi-Fi works. ____19____.
The series not only lets us wonder at the plant world but pushes us to understand that plants are important. “____20____. We depend upon them for every mouth of food that we eat and every breath that we breathe,” said David Attenborough, presenter of the series. It’s time to look after wild plants just as carefully as our houseplants.
    A. And they can’t think like us
    B. Plants are the basis of all life, including ourselves
    C. The Green Planet reveals the secret lives of plants
    D. Plants also help each other and even communicate
    E. Some plants like Monstera spread their big leaves to reach light
    F. Filming took three years to complete and took place in 27 countries
    G. If a tomato plant gets a leaf disease, it can tell nearby plants about it
A 17. E 18. D 19. G 20. B
    根据上文“They can’t talk. They can’t walk.”(它们不能说话。 故选A项。
根据空前“The forest floor is described as a “battlefield” in the series as only two percent of the sunlight filters (透过) through it.”(森林地面被描述为一个“战场”,因为只有百分之二的阳光通过它)及空后“But they are caught up in a vine (藤蔓) that tries to take a ride.”(但它们被一条试图搭车的藤蔓缠住了)可知,空处要描写一些植物是如何努力获取阳光的。

根据上文“Studies also show that plants use fungus (真菌) in the soil as a way to “talk” to each other. It’s kind of like how Wi-Fi works.”(研究还表明,植物利用土壤中的真菌相互“交谈”。
根据下文“We depend upon them for every mouth of food that we eat and every breath that we breathe,” said David Attenborough, presenter of the series.”(我们吃的每一口食物和呼吸的每一次呼吸都依赖于植物,”该系列节目主持人大卫·阿滕伯勒说)可知,植物是所有生命的基础,也包括人类。

In a class I teach adults. I gave the class homework that was to “go to someone you love within the next week and tell them you love them. It has to be someone you have never said those words to before or at least haven’t shared those words with for a long time.”
It doesn’t sound like a very tough homework until you realize that most of the men in that group were over 35 who were less willing to express their feelings. So this was a very challenging homework for some.
At the beginning of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to share what had happened when they told someone they loved them. I fully expected one of the women to volunteer, as was usually the case, but on this evening one of the men raised his hand. He appeared quite moved and a bit shaken.
As he stood up, he began by saying, “Five years ago, my father and I had a sharp disagreement and really never solved it since then. We avoided seeing each other unless we absolutely had to be at family gatherings. But even then, we hardly spoke to each other, So, last Tuesday by the time I got home I had convinced myself I was going to tell my father I loved him. It was weird (怪异的), but just making that decision seemed to lift a heavy load off my chest.”
“The next morning I was up bright and early. I got to the office early and completed more in two hours than I had the whole day before. At 9: 00 I called my dad to see if I could come over after work. When he answered the phone, I just said, ‘Dad, can I come over after work tonight? I have something to tell you. ’My dad agreed with reluctance (不情愿).”
“At 5: 30. I was at my parents’ house ringing the doorbell, praying (祈祷) that Dad would answer the door. As luck would have it, Dad did answer the door. I didn’t waste any time — I took one step in the door and said, ‘Dad, I just came over to tell you that I love you.’”
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“It was as if a change came over my dad.”
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“But that’s not even my point.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“It was as if a change came over my dad. Before my eyes his face softened, the reluctance seemed to disappear and he began to cry. He reached out and hugged me and said, ‘I love you too, son, but I’ve never been able to say it.’ It was such a precious moment that I didn’t want to move. Mom walked by with tears in her eyes. I just waved and blew her a kiss. Dad and I hugged for a moment longer and then I left. I hadn’t felt that great in a long time.”
“But that’s not even my point. Two days after that visit, my dad, who had heart problems but didn’t tell me, had an attack and ended up in the hospital, unconscious. I don’t know if he’ll make it. So my message to all of you in this class is this: Don’t wait to do the things you know need to be done. What if I had waited to tell my dad that I love him — maybe I will never get the chance again! Take the time to do what you need to do and do it now!”
