Dear Mike,
My worst subject in school is history because I have to memorize a lot of things. I often forget what I’ve memorized. My parents often blame me for my poor grades. What should I do?
Josephine
Dear Josephine,
Memorizing is probably one of the most boring things you have to do in school. However, you have to do it a lot, whether you’re memorizing formulas for math class or important dates in history class.
However, you can try to make it more fun. There are many apps that can turn learning into games. Many of them use flash cards, which are very useful for memorizing things. I use flash cards to teach myself Chinese vocabulary, for example.
Understanding cause and effect is the key point for memorizing things. You can also try to see how history is connected to your own life. I think this will help you memorize things more easily. Also, try to explain to your parents that you’re trying as hard as you can. Show them your notes, your textbooks, or other learning materials. They can then see how hard you’re working.
Mike Fuksman

When I was a little girl, I was the center of attention. I had control of the soccer field and played football with boys. I shared my opinions in class discussions. I was never afraid that I was wrong. Judgement from others didn’t trouble me.
But finally, my family left for a new place. I felt as if I had lost my value. After all, what is a ruler without her lands? Now it’s a completely new life for me. Over time, started to care about how others thought about me. I stopped playing football and racing with others. I never raised my hand up in class... The worry was: what if I was not perfect? The worry influenced me a lot. And I was in low spirits for a long time.
A few months later, when I arrived at home with tears in my eyes, I saw a letter stuck to my door. In the letter. I was described as a role model. I learned that someone who had clearly seen my pain and worry tried to comfort me. I gave my joy to create a perfect self. So I changed my attitude towards life. I tried to open my heart and make friends with others. As time went by, everything went well.
The letter has changed me a lot. I try to be myself-not to pay much attention to being perfect again. So, be yourself and accept yourself. Being perfect is not so important.

My father, who was always drunk and angry, beat me more and more every day. He always locked the door when he went away and kept the key in this pocket. One day I found an old saw that he hid in the roof. When I was alone in the house, I started to make a hole on the floor under the big table.
The next day my father said, “Huck, go to the river and catch some fish for breakfast. Quickly! And don’t try anything. Remember, I’m watching you!”
While I was fishing by the river, I saw an empty boat nearby.
“A boat!” I thought happily. “This is my chance to escape. I’ll hide the boat near some trees and use it tonight!”
When my father went to town that afternoon, I got my saw and started to work on the hole. It was late afternoon when I finished making the hole.
“I did a good job,” I thought, looking at the hole. “Now I’ll get my father’s gun.”
I looked outside the window and there was nobody there. I quickly escaped through the hole. Then I ran into the woods to hunt a wild pig. Luckily, I found one. I shot it and took it back to the house and let the pig’s blood fall on the wooden floor of the house. Then I pulled some of my hair out and put it on my father’s axe with some of the pig’s blood. I took the pig’s body outside and put it in a big bag with some rocks, and threw it into the river.
“This way people will think ▲ !” I thought. “They’ll come and look for my body in the river.” This idea made me smile.

A school in England for autism (自闭症) children is finding a new use for VR headsets (虚拟现实头盔). Prior’s Court is a school in southern England. The teachers at the school are also using high technology to learn more about their students. People with autism may find it hard to deal with places and situations they have not experienced before. But VR headsets can help to solve this problem.
VR headsets make the wearers feel like they are in different places. For example, someone wearing a VR headset can have a 360—degree view of a place as they turn around. With the video, they can even hear the sounds of the place. Teachers at Prior’s Court are using VR to introduce children to situations like visiting a shopping mall or getting on a plane. They can do so in the safety of their classroom. Besides, the children may learn to enjoy new experiences such as skiing or deep-sea diving (潜水).
Nuno Guerreiro is a computing teacher at Prior’s Court School. He told the reporter, “Our young people, they have difficulties in feeling things so they can find it worried and anxious when going to very busy places. They like what is familiar.” The school officials hope the VR experiences will help children feel better about changes from their familiar life.
“We’re hoping to increase our knowledge about the world of young people with autism. Even more, we’re hoping to be able to, in time, share that with the wider autism world.” an official said.
