Step1: Self-study

Assignment before class:

Preview the text and think about the questions below the material. Write the answers down on textbook P54.

Read the text carefully and answer the questions.

This step is aimed at helping students get more familiar with the writing material and accelerating the class process.

Step2: Cooperation and instruction

Lead-in:

In the reading part we have learned a terrible earthquake that happened in China. It’s an earthquake on the land. But do you know that there are also earthquakes happening in the sea?

What terrible results will be caused by the earthquakes happening in the sea?

Think about the questions and some of students are invited to answer the questions individually.

Connect the writing part with the reading part. Arouse students’ interest in getting to know more about the class.

Pre-writing

Understanding the text: Divided students in groups of 4. Students are to check and discuss about the comprehension questions below the material. Monitor students’ discussion efficiency.

Work in groups of 4. Talk about the answers to the questions. Share their own thoughts and problems in comprehension.

This step is designed to promote students’ ability to learn from others and cultivate group work spirit.

While-writing:

1.Example analysis: Look at the example summary on P55 of the textbook. Check the main points it includes. Underline it in the text.

Work in groups of 4. Analyze the example summary for the text and tick the main points included in the summary. Then scan for them in the original text.

The step is designed to train students’ ability to analyze and appreciate the examples.

While-writing:

2. Summarize the features of new writing style: Now let’s read the tag on P55 together. This tag is about the definition of an summary. We shall find the features of a summary together.

Read the definition of a summary and make clear of the features of this writing style.

The step is aimed at helping students grasp the features of a summary.

3. Steps for drafting a summary: Now that we have learned the features and contents of a summary. Let’s see how can we write one. Look at the guidance in Part3 on P55 of the textbook.

Study the process of drafting a summary with the guidance on textbook on P55.

The step is designed to develop students’ ability to write a summary in an organized way.

Step3: Practice

While-writing:

4. Compose your summary following the guidance on the textbook. Try to avoid grammar and spelling mistakes

Write a summary of the text “The Night the Earth Didn’t Sleep”, following the guidance on textbook, including all the main points and strictly obey the writing features.

The step is aimed at helping students put the theories they have learned into practical use.

Step4: Editing

Post-writing

Edit your summary first and then hand it to me.

Edit the summary according to the checklist in Part3 on P55. Then hand it to teachers for further polishing.

This step is designed to develop students’ ability to examine language accuracy and polish their writing product.
