The Biggest Stadiums in the World
People have been pouring into stadiums since the days of ancient Greece. In around 80 A.D., the Romans built the Colosseum, which remains the world’s best known stadium and continues to inform contemporary design. Rome’s Colosseum was 157 feet tall and had 80 entrances, seating 50,000 people. However, that was small fry compared with the city’s Circus Maximus, which accommodated around 250,000 people.
These days, safety regulations-not to mention the modern sports fan’s desire for a good view and comfortable seat—tend to keep stadium capacities(容量) slightly lower. Even soccer fans tend to have a seat each; gone are the days of thousands standing to watch the match.
For the biggest stadiums in the world, we have used data supplied by the World Atlas list so far, which ranks them by their stated permanent capacity, as well as updated information from official stadium websites.
All these stadiums are still funtional, still open and still hosting the biggest events in world sport.
·Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, Pyongyang D.P.R. Korea. Capacity: 150,000. Opened: May 1,1989.
·Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan, U. S. Capacity: 107,601. Opened: October 1, 1927.
·Beaver Stadium, State College, Pennsylvania, U. S. Capacity: 106,572. Opened: September 17, 1960.
·Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio, U. S. Capacity: 104,944. Opened: October 7,1922.
·Kyle Field, College Station, Texas, U. S. Capacity: 102,512. Opened: September 24, 1927.
1. How many people could the Circus Maximus hold?
A. 104,944. B. 107,601. C. About 150,000. D. About 250,000.
2. Of the following stadiums, which is the oldest?
A. Michigan Stadium. B. Beaver Stadium. C. Ohio Stadium. D. Kyle Field.
3. What do the listed stadiums have in common?
A. They host big games. B. They have become tourist attractions.
C. They were built by Americans. D. They are favored by architects.

Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.
Psychologist Susan Levine, an expert on mathematics development in young children at the Universality of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial (空间的) skills. Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition (认知) after controlling for differences in parents’ income, education and the amount of parent talk, Levine said. The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.
“The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not, on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate (转) and translate shapes,” Levine said in a statement.
The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of the children in the study played with puzzles at one time.
Higher- income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles, had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than the parents of girls.
The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.
4. What can children gain from puzzle play?
A. Confidence. B. Spatial skills.
C. Self-control. D. High-tech knowledge.
5. What did Levine take into account when designing her experiment?
A. Parents’ character. B. Parents income.
C. Children’s grade. D. Child- parent relationship.
6. How do boys differ from girls in puzzle play?
A. They play with puzzles more often.
B. They tend to talk less during the game.
C. They prefer to use more spatial language.
D. They are likely to play with tougher puzzles.
7. What is the best title of this passage?
A. A Scientific Study of Children’s Growth
B The Benefits of Playing Puzzles to Children’s Skills
C. The ways to develop on Children’s Spatial Skills
D. The Difference Between Boys’ and Girls Skills
B 5. B 6. D 7. B

I was 16 years old the day I skipped school for the first time. It was easily done: Both my parents left for work before my school bus arrived, so when it showed up at my house on that cold winter morning, I simply did not get on. The perfect crime!
And what did I do with myself on that glorious stolen day, with no adult in charge and no limits on my activities? Did I get high? Hit the mall for shopping?
Nope. I built a warm fire in the wood stove, prepared a bowl of popcorn, grabbed a blanket, and read. I was thrilled and transported by a book — it was Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises—and I just needed to be alone with it for a little while. I ached to know what would happen to Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley and Robert Cohn. I couldn’t bear the thought of sitting in a classroom taking another biology exam when I could be traveling through Spain in the 1920s with a bunch of expatriates (异乡客).
I spent that day lost in words. Time fell away, as the room around me turned to mist, and my role — as a daughter, sister, teenager, and student — in the world no longer had any meaning. I had accidentally come across the key to perfect happiness: I had become completely absorbed in something I loved.
Looking back on it now, I can see that some subtle things were happening to my mind and to my life while I was in that state of absorption. Hemingway’s language was quietly braiding itself into my imagination. I was downloading information about how to create simple and elegant sentences, a good and solid plot. In other words, I was learning how to write. Without realizing it, I was on the trail of my own fate. Writing now absorbs me the way reading once did and happiness is their generous side effect.
8 Why did the author skip school on that day?
A. Because her parents left home early. B. Because she was attracted by a novel.
C. Because she planned to go shopping. D. Because she missed the school bus.
9. What did the author think is the source of true joy?
A. Reading by the fire. B. Travelling in Spain.
C. Freeing herself from the roles. D. Being lost in one’s passion.
10. Which word can best replace the underlined phrase “braiding itself into” in the last paragraph?
A. Entering. B. Recovering. C. Weakening. D. Blocking.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. I was aware of the subtle things back then.
B. I simply learnt how to write on the internet.
C. Hemingway’s style influenced me a lot.
D. Becoming a writer was my childhood dream.
B 9. D 10. A 11. C
根据文章第一段“I was 16 years old the day I skipped school for the first time.(我第一次逃学的时候16岁。)和第三段“I was thrilled and transported by a book — it was Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises—and I just needed to be alone with it for a little while.(海明威的《太阳照样升起》让我兴奋不已,我只是想独自一人看一会儿。)”可知,作者被一本小说吸引所以逃学。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“I had accidentally come across the key to perfect happiness: I had become completely absorbed in something I loved.(我偶然发现了完美幸福的关键:我已经完全沉浸在我喜欢的事情中。)”
根据划线词所在句上文“Looking back on it now, I can see that some subtle things were happening to my mind and to my life while I was in that state of absorption.(现在回想起来,当我沉浸在这种状态时,我可以看到一些微妙的事情发生在我的思想和我的生活中。)”以及下文“I was downloading information about how to create simple and elegant sentences, a good and solid plot.(我下载的信息是关于如何创建简单优雅的句子以及一个良好而坚实的情节。)”可以推断出海明威的语言风格在潜移默化之中影响了作者对语言的感悟,所以划线句 “Hemingway’s language was quietly braiding itself into my imagination.” A. Entering进入;B. Recovering破坏;C. Weakening弱化;D. Blocking堵塞。故选A 项。
根据最后一段“Hemingway’s language was quietly braiding itself into my imagination. I was downloading information about how to create simple and elegant sentences, a good and solid plot. In other words, I was learning how to write.(海明威语言悄悄地融入了我的想象。我下载的信息是关于如何创建简单优雅的句子以及一个良好而坚实的情节。换句话说,我在学习如何写作。)”可知,海明威的语言悄悄地编织在作者的想象中,并且作者通过读海明威的作品学习如何写作,因此可以推断出海明威的风格对作者影响很大。故选C项。

While the arts can’t stop the COVID-19 virus or the social unrest we see in the world today, they can give us insight into the choices we make when moving through crises and chaos. The arts invite everyone to think in new ways.
We often experience works of art as something that’s pleasing to our senses without a full understanding of the creative effort. Great art often shows us contradictions and crises, and we can learn a great deal from their resolutions (解决). Through our understanding of art, we can gain a deeper understanding of how we might overcome our own challenges. In understanding extremes of contrast, we can see the beauty in art with themes that are not simply pleasing for their magnificent features or qualities.
Beethoven offers a wonderful example of moving artfully through crises and chaos. He composed his Symphony No.9 as his hearing loss became more and more pronounced. The opening of the symphony seems to come out of nowhere, from near silence in the opening to a full expression of what many consider to be the joy of freedom and universal brotherhood with Schiller’s Ode to joy (欢乐颂). Beethoven appears to have created a work of art that not only freed him from his personal struggles, but one that also speaks to the joy of living together in peace and harmony.
Have a dialogue between the two opposing parts and you will find that they always start out fighting each other until we come to an appreciation of difference—a oneness of the two opposing forces. The arts offer many lessons that can help us gain the knowledge we need to move more confidently in today’s competitive and uncertain environment. An openness to arts-based solutions will give you more control over your future.
12. What value does art have beyond pleasing people’s senses?
A. It brings people inner peace. B. It contributes to problem-solving.
C. It reduces the possibility of crises. D. It deepens understanding of music.
13. What can we learn about Beethoven’s Symphony No.9?
A. It celebrates freedom and unity. B. It aims to show crises and chaos.
C. It opens with Schiller’s Ode to Joy. D. It is unfinished due to his hearing loss.
14. What is the author’s suggestion on dealing with conflicting forces?
A. Leaving things as they are. B. Making a choice between them.
C. Separating them from each other. D. Engaging them in a conversation.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. How COVID-19 changes art B. Essentials of Symphony No.9
C. Moving artfully through crises D. Joy in the eyes of Beethoven
B 13. A 14. D 15. C

根据第三段“The opening of the symphony seems to come out of nowhere, from near silence in the opening to a full expression of what many consider to be the joy of freedom and universal brotherhood with Schiller’s Ode to joy (欢乐颂). (交响乐的开场似乎不知从何而来,从开场时近乎沉默,到席勒的《欢乐颂》充分表达了许多人认为自由的喜悦和普遍的兄弟情谊。)”可知,贝多芬的第九交响曲歌颂的主题是自由和团结。故选A。
根据第四段“Have a dialogue between the two opposing parts and you will find that they always start out fighting each other until we come to an appreciation of difference—a oneness of the two opposing forces. (在两个对立的部分之间进行对话,你会发现他们总是开始互相争斗,直到我们认识到差异——两个对立力量的统一。)”可知,作者对于处理冲突各方的建议是让各方进行对话和交流。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“While the arts can’t stop the COVID-19 virus or the social unrest we see in the world today, they can give us insight into the choices we make when moving through crises and chaos. The arts invite everyone to think in new ways. (虽然艺术无法阻止新冠肺炎病毒或我们今天在世界上看到的社会动荡,但它们可以让我们深入了解我们在经历危机和混乱时所做的选择。艺术邀请每个人以新的方式思考。)”可知,文章主要讲述的是理解艺术对于应对现实危机和冲突的启示。故选C。
