Michael Faraday was an English chemist and physicist born in a working class on 22 September 1791. Faraday’s father suffered from long-term health problems that often impeded his work. As a result, Faraday’s family had little money and Faraday got a very little formal schooling. But Faraday had an active curiosity and determination to learn. While working in London as a teenager, he had access to a wide range of books and he read everything he could get his hands on. By doing a lot of reading, Faraday soon educated himself on many scientific subjects, and his life as a scientist began.
In 1812, Faraday attended four lectures at the Royal Institution given by a famous chemist named Humphrey Davy. Afterwards Faraday sent a letter to Davy, expressing a strong interest in the subjects covered in the lectures and offering his services as a lab assistant. A year later, Davy accepted Faraday as his lab assistant. Thanks to his work with Davy, Faraday got a complete scientific education.
He soon began to research and experiments with electricity. Although his time was mostly spent helping Davy, Faraday began to work on his own as a chemist and scientist of great importance. When Davy retired in 1827, Faraday took his place as the head of the chemistry department of the Royal Institute. Upon taking up the position he could focus on his own research, and Faraday’s most influential and celebrated work began in the 1830s. In 1831, he discovered electromagnetic induction(电磁感应), a breakthrough in the field of technology. In 1846 he gave a lecture that presented important ideas about the nature of electricity, and these later inspired the historical work of James Maxwell related to electromagnetic field theory.

Home gardens produce delicious food. But that’s not their main virtue.
Imagine a plate holding two strawberries, identical in appearance. One comes out of a supermarket box, meaning it is probably harvested when it is still unripe, immediately placed in a forced-air cooling unit and driven hundreds of miles. By the time it reaches the plate, it may have been off the vine for two weeks. The other strawberry is picked from a garden minutes before being eaten. The first one will probably taste sour with a light strawberry flavor. The second is likely to be sweet, and the flavor will remain in the mouth, as the smell will on the hands.
Supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages: they are convenient and available almost everywhere. The same could be said of cooking: affordable and decent restaurants around, so why bother to make your own meals?
That attitude misunderstands the final appeal of gardening: it mistakes the product for the purpose.
It is true that a garden, especially in the early years, can bring little but frustration. Inexperienced gardeners may plant the wrong crops for their soil. And even expert gardeners can lose a season’s harvest to uncooperative weather.
No matter.
The real joy of gardening is the time spent doing it. The deepest pleasure—as with cooking, writing, or almost anything worthwhile—is in the work itself. A gardener’s memories center not on the food produced, but on long summer afternoons with hands in the dirt, surrounded by family, if the garden is at home, or enhancing relationships with friends and neighbors in a community garden. To garden is to patiently, lovingly and diligently help life grow, in the ground and above it.
8. What do we know about the supermarket strawberry?
A. It may taste sour. B. It is cheaper than the garden one.
C. It is picked two weeks before it is ripe. D. It looks more attractive than the garden one.
9. Why might a home garden harvest little?
A. Because the soil is wet. B. Because the weather is bad.
C. Because the gardener lacks confidence. D. Because the plants grow in the wrong season.
10. Gardening is similar to cooking and writing in that __________.
A. they all encourage patience B. they all promote friendships
C. they all need rich experience D. they all bring joy in the process
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The advantages of green food. B. The benefits of home gardening.
C. The trend of making food at home. D. The pleasure of watching life grow.
A 9. B 10. D 11. B
根据第二段中的“The first one will probably taste sour with a light strawberry flavor.(第一种可能会尝起来酸酸的,带有淡淡的草莓味。)” 故选A。
根据第五段中的“And even expert gardeners can lose a season’s harvest to uncooperative weather.(即使是专业的园丁也可能因为不合作的天气而失去一个季节的收成。)”
根据最后一段中的“The deepest pleasure—as with cooking, writing, or almost anything worthwhile—is in the work itself.(与烹饪、写作或几乎任何有价值的事情一样,最深的乐趣在于工作本身。)”
But that’s not their main virtue.(家庭菜园出产美味的食物。但这并不是它们的主要优点。)”引出话题:家庭菜园有许多优点。接下来具体讲述了家庭园艺的好处:能生产出美味的食物、能带来快乐、促进人际关系等。由此可推测出,B项“家庭园艺的好处”最符合。故选B。
D
Milk, it comes from cows, right? Well, not all the milk you see on supermarket shelves is from cows. These days we see many plant-based alternatives to dairy, such as oat, pea and soya milk. But why would someone stop drinking their full-fat, semi-skimmed or skimmed cow’s milk and trade it for one of these? There are many reasons why someone might try alternative milks.
Some people believe the alternatives are healthier than milk from cows. Those with lactose(乳糖) intolerance or thinking about becoming vegan might start drinking alternative milks. Also, concerns about the impact of dairy farming on the environment could be a factor. Whatever the reason, there are many alternatives to dairy out there for us to consume. But what are the differences between these other options and regular cow’s milk? Soya milk is one common alternative. According to some sources, such as healthline.com, it contains a similar amount of protein to regular milk. It is also lower in calories than some cow’s milk, which could be good for those on a diet, and often comes strengthened with things like calcium and various vitamins.
So, all good? Well, soya, according to foodallergy.org, is one of the nine foods which cause the majority of allergic reactions, such as lactose intolerance and nut allergy. Almond milk is a low-calorie, low-fat drink and is naturally lactose free and has a slight nutty taste. When unsweetened, it also has lower levels of carbohydrates and sugars than some dairy options. However, even when strengthened, it doesn’t provide the levels of protein seen in soya or regular milk. Then there’s coconut milk, which is low in calories and may affect people with lactose intolerance as much as other options, but is lacking in protein.
Whichever plant-based milk you choose, there are positives and negatives. Dieticians agree the most important thing is getting a healthy balanced diet which won’t trigger any allergies and comes with all the minerals and vitamins you need. And at the end of the day, it may just come down to which one you think tastes better.
12. What is the purpose of the question at the very beginning?
A. To state a wrong belief. B. To introduce the main topic.
C. To express the writer’s doubt. D. To ask for an immediate answer.
13. In what aspect is the alternative milk different from regular cow milk?
A. Farming technology. B. Allergy symptoms.
C. Weight control. D. Taste preferences.
14. Which milk might a lactose intolerance person prefer?
A. Soya milk. B. Almond milk. C. Coconut milk. D. Regular milk.
15. What do dieticians suggest?
A. Returning to cow milk. B. Making use of alternative milks.
C. Calculating mineral and vitamin content. D. Combining nutrition facts with taste buds.
B 13. C 14. B 15. D

根据第一段中的“Milk, it comes from cows, right? Well, not all the milk you see on supermarket shelves is from cows. These days we see many plant-based alternatives to dairy, such as oat, pea and soya milk.(奶,它来自奶牛,对吧?嗯,并不是所有你在超市货架上看到的奶都来自奶牛。如今,我们看到了许多以植物为基础的替代乳制品,如燕麦、豌豆和豆浆。)”可知,作者开头提出奶是否来自奶牛的问题,并给出回答说不是说有的奶都是从奶牛身上挤出来的,接着引出有以植物为基础的替代乳制品。由此可推测出,作者在文章开头提出问题是为了引出本文主要讨论的话题——植物奶。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。第二段中的“But what are the differences between these other options and regular cow’s milk?(但是,这些其他选择与普通牛奶之间有什么区别?)” 根据第二段中的“It is also lower in calories than some cow’s milk, which could be good for those on a diet, and often comes strengthened with things like calcium and various vitamins.(它的热量也比一些牛奶低,这对那些节食的人有好处,而且经常补充钙和各种维生素等。)”
根据第三段中的“Almond milk is a low-calorie, low-fat drink and is naturally lactose free and has a slight nutty taste.(杏仁奶是一种低热量、低脂肪的饮料,天然不含乳糖,有轻微的坚果味。)”
根据最后一段中的“Dieticians agree the most important thing is getting a healthy balanced diet which won’t trigger any allergies and comes with all the minerals and vitamins you need. And at the end of the day, it may just come down to which one you think tastes better.(营养师们一致认为,最重要的是获得健康均衡的饮食,这种饮食不会引发任何过敏,并含有你需要的所有矿物质和维生素。而最终,可能只是归结为你认为哪一种味道更好。)”可知,营养师们认为选择奶品的时候要考虑其是否健康均衡,含有必要的营养物质且不会造成过敏,而且还要考虑哪种味道好。由此可推测出,营养师建议要综合考虑营养因素和口感。故选D。
第二节(共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)
根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 选项中有两项为多余选项。
Creativity can seem like magic. We look at people like Steve Jobs and Bob Dylan, and we conclude that they must possess supernatural powers. ___16___ It’s a skill. Anyone can learn to be creative and to get better at it. A set of lessons has emerged about what creativity is and how to encourage it in ourselves and our work.
Let’s start with the hardest problems. ___17___ Scientists have begun studying how insight occurs. They have found that certain factors make people much more likely to have an insight, better able to find answers. For instance, exposing participants to a short, humorous video boosts the average success rate by about 20 percent.
___18___ It can be Archimedes in the bathtub or the physicist Richard Feynman scribbling equations in a strip club. As Einstein once declared, “Creativity is what is left after time is wasted.”
But this raises an obvious question: If different kinds of creative problems benefit from different kinds of creative thinking, how can we ensure that we’re thinking in the right way at the right time? When should we daydream and go for a relaxing stroll, and when should we keep on sketching and toying with possibilities? ___19___ Scientists call it “feelings of knowing”, and they occur when we suspect that we can find the answer, if only we keep on thinking.
Steve Jobs famously declared that “Creativity is just connecting things”. ___20___ It can be satisfying when the flame catches and a new idea sweeps around the world.
A. But creativity is not magic.
B Every creative story is different.
C. It’s just a matter of getting the answer out.
D. Such problems are typically solved in a moment of insight.
E. Actually human minds can assess the right kind of creativity.
F. The most unbelievable concepts are combinations of existing stuff.
G. They also explain why a major breakthrough happens in the unlikeliest place.
A 17. D 18. G 19. E 20. F

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dear fellow students,
Our school has a program to help students develop good habits. But there is a serious phenomenon in our school—some students are spending too much money on snacks. Eating snacks is a waste of money, which is also a bad habit that we should get rid of. In addition, most snacks have too much fat and sugar. We all agree that eating too much of the unhealthy food may lead to being overweight and diseases. What is worse, some students throw the wrappers everywhere, which makes a majority of students unhappy. As high school students, we shouldn’t act like children any more.
Dear fellow students, let’s form good eating habits and say no to snacks!

An abandoned dog stopped at the front door of the Laceys’ small house, wagging its tail, trembling with shyness and cold. Doris Lacey, whose school had been called off because of the snow, spotted the creature and immediately went up to meet it.
“Where did that come from?” Mrs. Lacey asked as soon as Doris put the dog down in the kitchen. Mr. Lacey was at the table, cleaning his fingernails. “I don’t know where it came from, ”he said mildly, “but I know for sure where it’s going.”
Doris hugged the dog hard against her. She said nothing.
Because of the snow, the roads would be too bad for travel for many days. Mr. Lacey couldn’t get out to take the dog to the animal shelter in the city right away. He agreed to let it sleep in the basement while Mrs. Lacey unwillingly let Doris feed it leftover food.
Four days passed and the dog did not complain. It never cried in the night or barked at the wind. It didn’t tear up everything in the basement. It wouldn’t even follow Doris up the basement steps unless it was invited. It was a good dog.
Several times Doris had opened the door in the kitchen that led to the basement and the puppy had been there, all stretched out, on the top step. Doris knew it had wanted some company and that it had lain against the door, listening to the talk in the kitchen, smelling the food, being a part of things. It always wagged its tail, eyes all sleepy, when she found it there.
Even after a week had gone by, Doris didn’t name the dog. She knew her parents wouldn’t let her keep it, that her father made so little money and any pets were out of the question, and that the dog would definitely go to the shelter when the weather cleared. Still, she tried talking to them about the dog at dinner one night. “She’s a good dog and not much trouble, right?” Doris said, hoping one of them would agree with her. But Mr. Lacey shook his head, “You know we can’t afford a dog, Doris. You try to act more grown-up about this.” Doris fell silent, praying the weather would never clear.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
However, the sun was shining the next morning. Doris was sitting alone in the living room trying not to cry, but she was not strong enough. Her face was wet and red, her eyes full of depression. Outside, she heard the trunk of the car slam shut, one of the doors open and close, the old engine cough and choke and finally start up. Hearing the car travel down the road, she could do nothing but cry herself to sleep, and her dreams were full of searching and searching for things lost.
Later that afternoon Mr. Lacey came back with the same dog. Doris put her hand to her mouth. She couldn’t believe her eyes. “You didn’t take her away?” she asked. “I did,” her father answered. “The worst looking place I’ve ever seen. Ten dogs in a cage. Smell was enough to knock you down. And they give an animal six days to live. Then they kill it with some kind of a shot. I wouldn’t leave an ant in that place, so I brought the dog back.” Doris excitedly ran to her father and gave him a super big hug. What an unexpected surprise it is!
