The silence was broken by the voice of a child. Out of the window, I saw my neighbor and her six-year-old daughter, Ayuni, playing in the park. Ayuni tried to climb the ladders of the slide again and again. Ayuni cried, shouted at her mother to help her, and then fell, but her mother told her to try again. Every time Ayuni fell off the ladder, her mother asked her to get up rather than helping her and wiping her tears.
I saw Ayuni shouting in anger, “You are the worst mother; I hate you!” But her mother listened to that quietly and patiently, and then she told her to try again. I was confused about why she was doing that. Even if she wanted Ayuni to learn to climb the ladders, she had to first help her by holding her and showing it practically to her. After all, Ayuni was too young to learn this based on verbal (口头的) instructions. Oh! I saw her mother tying to hide her tears as Ayuni fell for the 13th time! Then, I got curious to know what was going on!
Later, I noticed there was a letter that was addressed to my mother on the desk near the window. I saw the signature “Lavangi” , which is the name of the little girl’s mother. From the letter, I knew why she did that. Now, I extract the following from this letter : “Dear Manya, you’ve been like my elder sister and I’m emotionally attached to you so I decided to write this letter. I’ve been diagnosed with the last stage of cancer. I just want you to know that I love you. You’ve been a great supporter during my difficult time. The last favor I need from you is to keep an eye on my daughter, little Ayuni...”
After I read the letter, my tears rolled down my cheeks and I realized Ayuni’s mother was trying to teach Ayuni a lesson that she must be strong enough to live without her and do things by herself in the future. I gazed out of the window and then closed my eyes praying for Ayuni. I wished everything would go well with her.
41、How did Ayuni’s mother respond to Ayuni’s request in the park?

For many students who desire to move freely around but not far, one of the most common vehicles is the bicycle. For such a seemingly simple invention, its story is not that simple.
Most historians trace its origin back to 1817, when a German nobleman named Karl von Drais invented a wooden, two-wheeled machine that riders moved forward with their feet. His invention became popular in both England and France, where it eventually became known as the velocipede. Unfortunately, it was eventually banned as a danger to pedestrians and was rarely seen after the early 1820s.
Things were quiet for several decades until the bicycle development took off in the 1860s. An important milestone happened in Paris in 1863 when pedals were added to the front axle (轴). This occurred in Pierre Michaux’s workshop, but it’s unclear whether he or his employee, Pierre Lallement, should be given credit for the innovation. Lallement moved to the United States, where he obtained a patent for “improvements in velocipedes” in 1866. These new machines proved to be popular, and the name “bicycle” had come into use by1869. However, many people referred to them as “bone shakers”, which described their clunky ride due to a heavy wooden frame and steel wheels.
In the 1870s, “high wheelers” or “penny-farthings” became popular. However, with a large front wheel and a much smaller rear wheel, they could be dangerous, if riders had to stop suddenly, as they would “take a header” when their momentum ( 动量) carried them over the front wheel onto their heads. Eventually, English inventor John Kemp Starley designed a “safety bicycle” with two same small wheels, a chain drive, and a set of gears. With tires added in and brake systems bettered in the following decades, bicycle production had skyrocketed to over one million bicycles by 1899.
Mass production of bicycles increased their popularity greatly, since they became affordable for the average person. Over the course of the 20th century, manufacturers continued to improve the features and design of bicycles as new technologies appeared.
46、Why was the early bicycle forbidden after its invention?

48、What does the underlined word “clunky” in Paragraph 3 mean?

49、What was a feature of high wheelers?
A. It had a set of tires.
B. It moved at quite a low speed.
C. Its two wheels were different in size.

50、What is the main idea of the text?
A. Bicycles have a long and rich history.
B. The world becomes smaller due to bicycles.
C. Bicycles have gained wide popularity worldwide.
D. New technologies encourage bicycles’ development.
Gifted students in the Wichita Falls Independent School District in Texas had the opportunity to travel to STEM facilities and learn coding and other technical skills, but the transportation is not convenient. “We just started talking about, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we were able to design a mobile STEM lab?’” says Dr. Peter E. Griffiths, the district’s associate superintendent. Educators soon realized that they could retrofit (翻新) an old bus into a mobile STEM lab, which would provide increased access to career and technical education (CTE) experiences for students.
Districts sold off buses when the vehicles became too old. Griffiths and his colleagues decided to retrofit one of those old vehicles. “Give me your ‘best worst’ bus,” Griffiths said to the transportation department. Soon the process of transforming began. Griffiths reached out to Reuben Rodriguez, the owner of a local car company, and explained what they wanted to do. Rodriguez agreed to work with the district on the price on condition that they could send CTE students to lend a hand with some of the building work. And bringing the bus from the dream stage to fruition has taken a lot of joint efforts of educators and the community.
Called STEAM Machine, the bus looks like a device from a video game or a real-life Lego truck, and rides as a mobile maker space. “It has two touch screen TVs outside. It comes complete with drones (无人机) and drone obstacle courses that will help students learn about coding in an enjoyable way,” Griffiths says. “Those are things that a lot of these kids have never experienced before.”
To drive the bus, the district has hired a retiring teacher who will take the bus to various schools and engage in different lessons with students and educators. “We were so concerned about kids losing out on experiences before, and this is a solution. We aren’t going to let this go. The STEAM Machine will be equipped with all the necessary materials and resources, and it may change the way students learn and engage with their education,” Griffiths said.
51、What is the main purpose of the mobile STEM lab?
A. To develop students’ interest in STEM research.
B. To replace traditional school buses with electric ones.
C. To provide fun activities for students during long trips
D. To enable students to get more learning chances.
52、What was Rodriguez’s requirement for transforming the old bus?
A. Educators needed to pay him in advance.
B. Some students could help with the building work.
C. The old bus should be equipped with high technology.
D. The district must provide him with necessary materials.
53、What does Griffiths say about the STEAM Machine in Paragraph 3?
A. It brings students fun learning experiences.
B. It awakens students’ curiosity about bus driving.
C. It protects students’ health with its special design.
D. It saves students’ time by reducing traffic on the road.
54、What’s Griffiths’ attitude towards the future of the STEAM Machine?
A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Hopeful. D. Unclear.
55、Which of the following best describes the features of the STEAM Machine?

A woman in Lakewood, Washington, wanted to find a boy who left $5 and a heartbreaking apology note on her doorstep. On Friday, Marie found this note from “Jake” :
“I am sorry that I took your butterfly wind chimes (风铃) without your permission. My mom died and she liked butterflies so I took them to put by our window. Now I feel terrible for my past behavior. I am sorry. This is the only money I have. Please do not be mad at me.”
Marie told KCPQ she was not mad and wanted to find Jake to return his $5. “I wanted to cry because apparently he felt bad for what he had done. And I think he might be scared,” she told the station. Marie said she knows stealing is immoral, but she is sympathetic to the child. “I’m not agreeing with the stealing act but he did try to make up for what he had done. I lost my mom at a young age so I really make sense of his feeling and know how hard it is,” she said.
Marie wanted to find Jake, not to punish him, but to return his money for his honesty. Marie moved to the neighborhood two months ago and didn’t know many people there, which made tracking down Jake difficult.
In order to find the boy, she took to Facebook. Almost a week later, her Facebook post got much attention from social media, but she still didn’t hear from the boy. 故选A。
The silence was broken by the voice of a child.Out of the window,I saw my neighbor and her six-year-old daughter,Ayuni, playing in the park.Ayuni tried to climb the ladders of the slide again and again.Ayuni cried, shouted at her mother to help her,and then fell, but her mother told her to try again.Every time Ayuni fell off the ladder, her mother asked her to get up rather than helping her and wiping her tears. After I read the letter,my tears rolled down my cheeks and I realized Ayuni's mother was trying to teach Ayuni a lesson that she must be strong enough to live without her and do things by herself in the future.

However, with a large front wheel and a much smaller rear wheel, they could be dangerous, if riders had to stop suddenly, as they would "take a header" when their momentum (动量) carried them over the front wheel onto their heads.
50、答案:A

Thank you so much for inviting me to take part in the summer camp organized by your school in the coming summer holiday. I’m more than interested in it, so I am writing to inquire about some specific information.

Second, because this is the first time for me to participate in such an activity, would you please offer suggestions on what I need to take. What’s more, would you be kind enough to tell me how much it will cost? I figure that it is time to save money for this desirable event.
