She got the idea after she met a homeless man named Edward on the street while going out shopping with her mother. They gave the man a sandwich, but Alice started thinking about how she could do more and continue providing food for the people in need. So she set up Alice’s Harvest, a garden with its own Facebook page, to grow vegetables.
“I said ‘sure’, thinking it would last a week. However, it lasts four years and she still offers vegetables to the homeless every week,” her mom, Miranda, said.
“It just doesn’t seem right that there are homeless people,” Alice said to her mother. “I think everyone should have a place to live in.” So she keeps putting in weeks of work on the shelters. Alice can use tools by herself to build a small house. The house is safe and dry.
Alice received money for the homes. She is going to put the money in the town’s permanent Tent City (帐篷) and hopes it can be open to the homeless later this year. “One window got put in today,” she wrote in one post. “I didn’t get as much as I wanted today, but one wall was in.”
Together Rising, which helped fund (资助) her project, said, “We can’t think of a better example than our Alice. She shows that no person or act of kindness is too small to change the world.”

Bald eagles like eating fish. People often see them flying down from the sky and catching fish out of the water quickly. They like living near open water because they can easily find fish there. Bald eagles also eat some small animals. Bald eagles stay in most parts of North America. They are in the southern states and Mexico all the way to Canada and Alaska. However, a large number of bald eagles live in Alaska and Canada.
The mother bald eagle lays one to three eggs each year. Both parents take care of the eggs. After about 35 days, the baby birds break out of the eggs. The young eagles are ready to leave home for food when they are about 13 weeks old.
Hunting and pollution made bald eagles in the United States in danger. Some strict rules to stop hunting the eagles and to cut pollution have allowed the bald eagles to come back.

16 It may be a surprise to most people. After all, we see a lot of cars each day, but we don’t see so many bicycles.
As we all know, bicycles are easy to park and need no energy. 17 So they are popular with people all over the world. However, do you know how they came into being?
The idea of a bicycle came from a child’s toy which was a horse made of wood. It had a horse’s head on one end of a stick and a wheel on the other. At first the bicycle had no pedals (脚蹬). To move forward, the rider had to put his feet on the ground to push it hard. 18 There was no way to turn the front wheel. If the rider wanted to change direction, he had to get off and move the bicycle.
19 For example, early bicycles had solid tires (实心轮胎) that made them shake. 20 He put a hose (软管) on his son’s bicycle and filled the hose with air, which helped stop the shaking. Over time, bicycles got lights, mirrors and so on.

Why do we have to be civilized and polite? Because it is our Chinese tradition that we have to be kind, helpful and polite. It is our duty to create a better environment which is full of love and peace for ourselves.
