三、阅读单选
When I was only seven, my family took a road trip to San Francisco. My father was driving our family car along the highway. The rain was pouring down so heavily that each drop of rain fell as if it was going to break the windows.
I wasn’t scared. The downpour got my attention and interested me. However, my brother, who was only one year younger than me, was annoying me with his unfriendly hits. I tried hard to stop him but failed. I could only complain to Mom and our sister about the fighting in the backseat, but it was useless.
My father, who was driving, knew the way to stop us from fighting. So he said, “Boys, do you know that I have learned magic?”
My brother and I stopped immediately. “What?”
My father replied, “Do you want me to show you some magic?”
I felt so excited that I jumped out of my seat. Even my brother showed great interest in what Dad was saying. It was every child’s dream to have a superhero father.
“I have the ability to stop the rain from falling. It’s only for short periods of time, so you have to pay close attention,” he said.
I was speechless. This seemed to be an impossible trick, even for a superhero. I could only stare at him through the rearview mirror (后视镜), wondering if the magic could really stop the rain.
“Are you ready?” he asked.
“Yes!” we both answered.
“Okay. Let me collect my powers.” There was a short pause. “Okay. First, I have to say the magic words ‘AbraCadabra’. Here we go...AbraCadabra!”
And just like that, for one second, the rain stopped! It was a miracle! I was shocked. My dad really was a superhero. How could I not have known? For years, he must have hidden his magical tools in the backyard. I thought his old the bad guys wouldn’t know who he really was.
“Wow!” I said to my brother, who seemed to be just as amazed as I was.
“Wow...” was all he could say, too.
Then our car drove under another overpass.

Few would have expected that viewers at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics would include animals. And yet, besides the exciting events, news reports also focused on several sightings of wildlife, especially leopard cats.
On Jan 31, on the alpine ski slopes in Yanqing district, 90 kilometers northwest of Beijing, a leopard cat was found walking through an award-ceremony rehearsal. The event caught the attention of volunteers and staff, with many snapping photos. Three days later, a Chinese photographer captured another leopard cat in the woods near the Olympic ski slopes. The creature ran past him, jumped over a fence and looked back.
Leopard cats are wild felids (猫科动物), slightly larger than house cats, and they mostly keep clear of human activity. However, according to Luo Shujin, a skier and a conservation biologist at Peking University, the frequent appearance of the animals close to the ski runs shows that the species has lived in this area relatively close to Beijing where human takes charge. Strangely, their calm manner suggests they are not frightened by human activity.
Without any research date, it is too early to draw any conclusions that the creation of the Olympic skiing venue (体育场馆) has not influenced the surrounding forests and wildlife. However, it’s possible that the wild cats have already got used to living with humans, likely because people at the venue have not shown an aggressive attitude toward the animals since it started being built.
According to Luo, wild cats are seldom seen so close to big cities. “I think this is a little-known side of Beijing,” says Luo, who is proud that such wildlife can be found so close to the capital city. “Such an event causes me to hope that we can try our best to ensure the balance between wildlife and human.”

For some students, getting better grades can seem like an impossible task sometimes. Just paying attention in class or studying hard isn’t always enough. 41 For students and parents who have ever wondered if this is possible, they can rest easy now. Research suggests that a person who likes doing activities can improve their grades.
Scientists think that those students who are active are not just exercising their bodies, but also exercising their brains. 42
In the most recent study, researchers found that when children played for half an hour each day, they were better at organizing their schoolwork and learning “difficult” subjects, such as maths.
43 Researchers think that if kids don’t get enough activities, they are going to be at a disadvantage when it comes to school performance.
In the research experiment, a group of children skipped (跳跃) with ropes, played basketball and did a number of other games or exercises. The other group of children didn’t do any activities. 44 Testing was mainly for maths and reading skills. Results showed that the children in the activity group did better on the tests than those who had no activity.
All work and no play will not only make Jack a dull boy, but will also negatively affect his grades in school, according to a new study in the Journal of Pediatrics.
45 Dr. Belton, an expert, said, “If you’d like to see your kids do better in school, have them close their books, set down their pencils and go outside to play.”
A.What does this mean for children who aren’t active?
B.Parents complain children today are actually less active and they always worry about their grades.
C.In turn, they can be able to improve their grades at school.
D.Are there other ways for students to improve their grades?
