There are many fun, free activities that you can do as a family. All that is required is a bit of imagination and some time. And the best part is that these are the kind of fun and family memories that a child will remember for a lifetime.
    Family Game Night
Kids often get games for Christmas or birthdays, and would love to have a chance to play with their family or make up some games of their own. Charades(字谜游戏)is a fun game that will challenge children to use their imagination. Divide the family into teams and let each team come up with words and the other has to act out.
    Family Art Time
Pick some time for the family to sit down and come up with their own art.
It doesn't need to be just a drawing— take some old magazines, let the kids cut out pictures and paste them into their own shape. Or let them use leaves, branches and whatever else they can find to make something from their imagination.
    Family Picnic
Taking the family for a picnic is a great way for some fun that doesn't cost any money. If the weather is nice, take them to a park or playground and let them have a day of playing.
    Family Field Trip
A family field trip doesn't have to cost a cent. Ask a nearby farm if you can bring your kids out for a tour and to see some of the animals. Or take them to a park to find certain items from nature. Ask a local business if you could bring the family for a tour to see how things work—you might be surprised at the number of people who would be excited to share what they do with others, and it could be an interesting lesson for kids.
    21. When playing the game charades, kids are supposed to .
    A. prepare some cakes for each other
    B. be quick to follow others' actions
    C. sing a song for each other in turn
    D. connect actions with certain words
    22. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .

    B. you may share your own experience with workers

    D. all the people will be excited to share what they have with you
    23. The passage is mainly intended for .
    A. teachers B. parents C. tourists D. teenagers

Stephen Wiltshire is a famous artist. His drawings — often drawn from memory and at great speed— are drawn on the spot at street level.
Stephen, who was born in London in 1974, didn't say a word as a small child, and found it hard to relate to other people. At the age of five, Stephen was sent to Queensmill School, London, where it soon became obvious that he communicated through the language of drawing. His teachers encouraged him to speak by taking away his art materials for a short time; eventually he said his first words —"paper"and "pencil"— but didn't learn to speak fully until the age of nine.
Stephen loved drawing and he was seldom to be found without pen and paper. Once he took part in art competitions, news of his great talent began to spread. Early fans included the late Prime Minister Edward Heath who bought his drawing of Salisbury Cathedral, made when Stephen was just eight.
But Stephen came to wider public attention when the BBC featured him in the programme, "The Foolish Wise Ones" in 1987, when he was introduced by Sir Hugh Casson(A past president of the Royal Academy), as "the best child artist in Britain"
After that, Stephen's reputation grew worldwide. A second BBC documentary(纪录片)in 2001 showed Stephen flying over London in a helicopter and later completing a detailed drawing of London within three hours, which included 12 historic landmarks(地标性建筑)and 200 other structures.
In 2006 Stephen was recognized for his services to the art world, when he was made a member of the Order of the British Empire. Today wherever Stephen goes, people are attracted by his outstanding talent.
    24. What problem did Stephen have when he was a small child?
    A. He couldn't speak. B. No schools wanted him.
    C. No teachers liked him. D. He couldn't spell.
    25. What does the underlined word "reputation"in the fifth paragraph mean?
    A. ability. B. works. C. talent. D. honor.
    26. What is special about Stephen's drawing of London?
    A. It was his greatest work. B. It was drawn in a helicopter.
    C. It was finished in a short time. D. It featured historic landmarks.
    27. The text is likely to appear in .
    A. a novel. B. an official report.
    C. a history of a person's life. D. a guidebook.
    C
You may be surprised to learn that English gets 30 to 45 percent of its words from French. The reason goes back to the year 1066, when Norman forces invaded(入侵)what is now Britain. The Normans were from northern France and spoke French. During the Norman occupation(占领), French became the language of England's rulers and wealthy class. This lasted for more than 300 years. Other people in England continued to speak English during this period.
Over time, the two languages combined and shared words. Some researchers believed that about 10, 000 French words eventually entered the English language. However, although English took many French words, their meanings have not always stayed the same. Sometimes the differences in meanings can be very important, and lead to funny or strange situations if the words are used in the wrong way.
Take the French word "college" for example. In English, "college" can often be used in place of the word "university", or sometimes as a school within a university. However, in French, "college" actually means "middle school" , or the level of schooling for students in grades five or six through eight.
There are many other similar words in the two languages with completely different meanings. In English, the word "chat" is a verb which means "to talk casually"; but in French, the word "chat"is the word for an animal: a cat.
If an English speaker says someone is "jolly", that means they are cheerful or friendly. But in French, "jolie" means someone is good-looking or pleasant to look at. In any case, both are nice things to say to someone.
    28. What does the author stress about the French words in English?
    A. Their spelling forms. B. Their changes in history.
    C. Their puzzles for English. D. Their different meanings.
    29. What does a Frenchman mean if he says he likes a chat?
    A. He likes a kind of pet. B. He wants to have a talk.
    C. He hates to speak English. D. He prefers to chat in French.
    30. What is the French word "jolie" used to do?
    A. Replace "jolly" in English. B. Describe people's looks.
    C. Refer to people's happiness. D. Prove the change in French.
    31. What is the text mainly about?
    A. Comparison between two languages. B. Difficulty in grasping English.
    C. French words in English. D. Development of English.
    D
Wind turbines(涡轮)and solar panels(太阳电池板)that produce electricity are examples of "green" technology. A new study finds that such renewable energy might be green in another sense. Large collections of those turbines or solar panels appear capable of bringing rains to the desert and would allow more plants to grow.
Building large wind or solar farms just to study their question was not an option. It would be too expensive. So experts Kalnay and Safa developed a model of North Africa's Sahara Desert to find out how wind turbines and solar farms might change the desert's climate.
The team ran its model several times. In one run, it assumed that people would set up wind farms only. Another run assumed people would set up just solar farms. A third assumed people would build both. They would affect the desert's weather with temperature and average daily rain increased—but differently. Setting up a mix of solar farms and wind turbines brought about a bigger change-not in temperature but in rainfall. In the Sahara, having both wind and solar farms more than doubled the amount of rain that fell, up to 215.4 millimetres(毫米)per day.
The models predicted that the average rainfall would increase over time, as more plants grew. Plants move water from the ground to the air. Warmer air can carry more water. So as this air rises, it can carry more water up to become clouds. Those clouds can release rain, relieving the thirst of plants below. Over time, this process repeats itself over and over. This positive feedback can greatly increase rains.
"Such rainfall changes could lead to better agriculture," says Safa. "More rain also would help wild plants grow. We believe that the countries in the Sahara should seriously consider investing in wind and solar power," he added.
    32. What is the new finding of the research?
    A. Deserts will be suitable for farming.
    B. It costs much to get deserts greener.
    C. Renewable energy can green a desert.
    D. Clean energy helps plants grow better.
    33. What discouraged experts from building energy farms?
    A. High construction expenses. B. A lack of suitable test sites.
    C. Shortage of manpower. D. Terrible climate.
    34. What may Safa advise the countries in the Sahara to do?
    A. Build more farms to grow crops. C. Invest in wind and solar power.
    B. Save more water for agriculture. D. Consider moving to other places.
    35. What was the advantage of the 3rd run?
    A. Greatly raising rainfall in the desert. B. Increasing temperature largely.
    C. Doubling global rainfall per day. D. Saving more energy with less cost.

There were a rich couple who were holding a big New Year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to keep their level of standard(标准)so they didn't mind paying for it. After buying all they needed, they called a porter(搬运工)to carry everything and drop them at their home. The porter who came was very old, and looked very unhealthy, and his clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn't even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the money for sending their goods(货物)to their home. The old porter asked for just $20, well below the market price. Yet, the couple argued and bargained(讨价还价)with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make even one time's meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple were very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for sending goods. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn't send their goods.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, "I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me. I am sure instead of sending the goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to ask and then to the police station to file the complaint against him."

    Text 1
M: What about coming to my place for a coffee, Kate?
W: I can't, Mike. I've got a meeting at ten o'clock, so I have to go to my office now. Another time, maybe.
    Text 2
W: The dress I'm trying on is too small. Do you have a larger size?
M: Yes, but not in that color. We have a larger one in yellow.
W: Yellow? Yellow would be lovely.
    M: Here you are.
    Text 3
M: Linda, could you hold this ladder? I need to get onto the roof.
W: Sure. Why are you doing that?
M: I want to clear the leaves off the roof.
    Text 4
M: Are you going to the exhibition in Kunming next week, Ellen?
W: Well, I was planning to, but I haven't been able to reserve a hotel room.
M: Have you tried the Intercontinental Hotel? They might still have space. And it's not too far from the exhibition hall.
    Text 5
W: Why on earth are we inside on such a beautiful day?
M: Well, it was just you who wanted to spend the day at a museum.
W: Shall we leave now and take a walk outside in the city square?
    Text 6
M: Have you ever eaten here before, Betty?
W: Only in the evenings. I didn't know until now that they served breakfast, too.
M: That's what the coffee shop is famous for. People have been coming here for about 16 years for breakfast.
    W: Oh, what's good here?
M: The best is their French toast. They take pieces of French bread and dip them in eggs. Then they bake them, and when it's done they spread some sugar and top everything with fresh fruit. It's delicious.
    W: I think I'll try it.
    Text 7
M: I' ll have to make a choice soon about next year. I've got a chance to go on a six-month journey to South America, but I've just been offered a job in a bookshop here.
W: Wow, South America? How could you say no?
M: Well, believe it or not, I'm not eager to see the world. I'd much prefer just to stay at home. Anyway, it's hard to decide.
W: Well, I would strongly advise you to think of the future. Working abroad is much more exciting than working in a small town. You' re lucky to have the opportunity. A lot of people don't.
    Text 8
W: Hi, Mike! Could you please tell me something about your study experiences?
M: OK. I studied in Australia for five years, in America for a year, and in Africa for more than three years.
W: Is that so? Did you also study in your home country, Canada?
M: Yes, of course. I went to primary school in my hometown.
W: You've had quite a lot of experiences around the world.
    M: Yes, it's been interesting.
W: So, what did you and your friends like to do for fun when you were in America?
M: Well, teenagers all like to have parties, and American students like to have parties at their own houses. Every weekend different students would invite me to their places and we would have a great time.
    Text 9
    W: I can't believe it's almost summer.
M: Yeah, I know. The year went really fast.
W: What are you going to do this summer vacation?
M: I'm going to work for a company.
W: A company? What's that? What do you do?
M: We help at parties. Our company prepares and serves the food. And usually, another company provides the music.
    W: I didn't know you could cook.
M: I don't have to cook. I'm only an assistant.
    W: When do you start?
    M: Tomorrow. We're helping a birthday party. Then, a big family get-together.
W: So, what exactly do you do?
M: Before the party starts, I help set everything up. You know, bring the food in and set the tables. Make sure it looks nice. That's the first part. During the party, I have to serve food and drinks to the guests.
    W: Sounds pretty cool.
    Text 10
Covent Garden is a main square in central London famous for its shopping and entertainment. Covent Garden also refers to the covered market in the middle of the square. This market is filled with clothing stores and small cafes, but it used to be the largest fruit and vegetable market in the UK. Because of traffic concerns, the market moved to an area about three miles to the south in the 1970s. Covent Garden has 13 theatres, including the Royal Opera House, and over 60 pubs and bars, most of which are near the main shopping area of the old market. Perhaps the most well-known feature of Covent Garden is the street entertainment that has been performed on the square since the 17th century. Performers are required to try out for scheduled times at specific areas around the market, including the North Hall, West Piazza, and South Hall. The main courtyard is for classical music only. There are street performances at Covent Garden every day of the year, except Christmas Day.

    Dear John,
I am sorry to hear that you are lonely in this new school. Now I'd like to offer you some suggestions.
It's normal for you to feel lonely because you are living in an entirely new environment. To adapt yourself to the unfamiliar surroundings, you'd better take an active part in class and after-school activities. What's more, don't be afraid to show people what you are really good at. It's easier to make friends when you have similar interests with others. To be frank,I' d like to be your friend and invite you to come to my home on Sunday.
I hope everything will be fine with you in the future.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

There were a rich couple who were throwing a big New Year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain their level of standard so they didn't mind paying for it. After purchasing all they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop them at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, and looked very unhealthy, and his clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn't even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, well below the market price. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make even one time's meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple were very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn't deliver their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, "I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me. I am sure instead of delivering the goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him."
They both left towards the market. On their way near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart!

    One possible version:
The angry wife asked him, "Where is that old thief? These are our goods." The porter replied, "Madam, please calm down. That poor old man was sick since last month. He wasn't able to earn enough money to even have a single meal of the day. He was on the way to deliver your goods, but he, who was hungry and sick, couldn't gather the strength to go any further in this heat of the noon. He fell down and he handed me $15. His last words were, 'I had taken an advance payment for this delivery; you take this and please deliver it to this address.'"
Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes and turned to his wife. "He was hungry, he was poor, but he was an honest man," the husband said. The wife felt quite ashamed that she was angry with her husband's decision. She had no courage to look her husband in the eyes. Suddenly it dawned on her that honesty has no class. Respect everyone regardless of their financial and social status. It's always a good deed to give something to the one who deserves.
