Emily Bhatnagar has always loved reading. “Growing up, I was really shy, so I always tuned to books,” she said. “They became my best friends when I didn’t have one.”
In 2019, when Emily was in her second year of high school, her dad suffered from cancer. The news was difficult for the family. Books became an even bigger comfort, and she started thinking about families in similar situations. When her father recovered, she came up with a plan to help others. “The idea came from the fact that there were kids who were facing the same problem, M she said.”
Then Emily started the book drive in her hometown, Gaithersburg, Maryland. The goal was to collect books and give them to kids being treated for cancer in local hospitals. Her father was not surprised by this plan. “She always wants to do things for the neighborhood he said. Since the start of the book drive, which she calls For Love & Buttercup, Emily has collected more than 10, 000 books.”
Emily had no idea how much attention her work would get. She started by posting on social media, asking people in her area to donate. “I was expecting maybe two or three neighbors to do it,” she said. “But it ended up blowing up,” especially when newspapers began reporting it.
The Children’s Inn is one of the places where Emily has donated books. M Donations like Emily’s share a piece of the world with kids and families that they may not experience, M said its director, Aisha Campbell. Emily continues to run the book drive with her parents help. She hopes to one day make it reach more kids. The memory of the first time she visited children who’d received her books sticks with her. “It was the best day of my life,” she said. “I realized I wanted to do this type of work forever.”

Several large companies have begun creating paper bottles to take the place of glass and plastic ones. Paper bottles aren’t quite ready to go yet, but you may see them appearing on shelves over the next few years.
Customers have become more worried about the environment, so many companies have begun working to develop paper bottles. Paper bottles have many benefits. Perhaps the most important is that they can be easily recycled. Paper bottles also weigh less than glass or plastic ones, meaning they’ll require less energy to produce and to move around. Since paper is soft and easy to be shaped, companies can design their bottles to take almost any shape they choose.
A company called Paboco has been working with many large companies to develop paper bottles. The companies are creating their own bottle designs, but they’re sharing what they learn to speed up the development of paper bottle technology.
Clearly, one of the biggest challenges is keeping a paper bottle from leaking (洞). Many companies are lining (做内衬) their bottles with a thin sheet of plastic. Though bottle makers may say can be removed, many recycling programs don’t have the right machines to handle them.
A company named Diageo has just announced the first paper bottle that is completely plastic-free. Instead of a plastic liner, a non-plastic coating will be used on the inside of the bottles. This should make the bottle fully recyclable. But even without the plastic, paper bottles aren’t perfect, which means more trees need to be cut down to make the bottles.
There’s still lots of testing to be done before paper bottles can replace glass or plastic ones. But with so many companies working toward the same goal, it’s likely that we can expect to see paper bottles on store shelves in the near future.
    28. What is the greatest advantage of paper bottles according to the passage?
    A. They are lighter than plastic or glass ones. B. They are soft and can be easily shaped.
    C. They can be moved around with less energy. D. They are easy to recycle and environmentally friendly.
    29. What is Paboco doing to improve the development of paper bottle technology?
    A. It’s cooperating with some other large companies.
    B. Its creating its own bottle designs.
    C. It’s studying how to prevent paper bottles from leaking alone.
    D. It’s trying to keep its technology secret from others.
    30. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. Many companies. B. The paper bottles. C. The thin sheets of plastic. D. Bottle makers.
    31. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
    A. A non-plastic coating is the best solution to the problem of pollution.
    B. Paper bottles still need to be improved before appearing in stores.
    C. Paper bottles have taken the place of glass or plastic ones so far.
    D. Many companies are working toward the same goal.
    D
Lots of animals play. But the behavior is best known in mammals (哺乳动物) and birds. Now the scientists at London’s Queen Mary University report that bumblebees (大黄蜂) know the same thing. But before this , there were no reports of insects playing.
Dr. Lars Chittka began to wonder if bumblebees played during an earlier test. In that test, Chittka guided bumblebees to move balls into a goal for food. He noticed that some bees were rolling (滚动) balls even when they weren’t given food. He wondered if they were playing.
To test the idea, the scientists at his lab set up a new test. First, they numbered 45 young bumblebees between one and 23 days old. The numbers let them follow bumblebees behavior. Then, they set up a clear pathway from the bumblebees’ home to a feeding area. On either side of the open pathway, the researchers placed small colored wooden balls. On one side of the path, the balls couldn’t move. On the other side, the balls could roll around. For three hours a day , over 18 days , the scientists opened the pathway between the home and the feeding area. The bumblebees never had to leave the pathway to find food, but they left anyway. They weren’t interested in the side where the balls didn’t move, but they made lots of visits to the side with the rolling balls.
Catching the balls with their legs, the bees would move their wings to pull on the balls , causing them to roll. The 45 numbered bumblebees did this 910 times during the test. Though some only did it once, others did it a lot. The younger ones liked to spend more time rolling balls while the older ones showed less interest in it. One bee was recorded rolling balls 44 times in a single day. One was seen rolling balls 117 times over the whole test.
The test raises important questions about how the insects’ minds work and whether they have feelings.
    32. What did Chittka want to do about bumblebees in the earlier test?
    A. Give some bumblebees some food. B. Train them to move balls.
    C. Make them learn to relax. D. Find out if they’d share food.
    33. What did the scientists do to bumblebees before the new test?
    A. They named each of them. B. They let them interested in balls.
    C. They had all of them go hungry. D. They marked (标记) them one by one.
    34. What can we say about the older bumblebees behavior in the new tests ________.
    A. They held their attention for longer. B. They understood simpler numbers.
    C. They were less active in rolling balls. D. They helped the young pull on balls.
    35. What’s the best title for the texts?
    A. Bumblebees Are First Insects Known to Play B. Two Tests Prove Bumblebees Expect to Play
    C. Bumblebees Are the World’s Smartest Insects D. Scientists Make Bumblebees Work for Them

    第二节 (满分25分)
    阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My dad got a new job. We had to pack up and move away from everything we were familiar with. There were so many changes. We came from the north, and now we were almost as far south as possible. We landed in South Florida, and we were total strangers. We moved over during the summer vacation, so I didn’t have to deal with school right away. Summer passed by while we unpacked, arranged furniture, found stores we liked, and adapted to the Sunshine State.
School was coming, and I was afraid of it. I was not an adventurous person. Being shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. My head was filled with fears and worries. Would I make friends? Would I fit in? Would I survive in this strange new world? Anyway, there I was, attending a new school full of people I didn’t know.
I had a difficult time adapting to the new school. However, I still loved learning and reading. I even loved homework, and I was good at doing my homework. Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Other kids, though, did not. Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates. I was unpopular. I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me.
Then one day, a tall boy walked over to me after an English class. He introduced himself and told me he was in the school basketball team. I knew him --- he was the star player! “Hey,” he said. “You do really well in English class. And you know, my teammates and I spend much time competing and practising. The subjects, especially English, really bother us. Do you think you could help us?” “Yes. Oh, definitely yes. I could, and I would,” I replied with surprise. We made the deal with an exchange of smiles.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    Something gradually changed after that.

Meanwhile, the basketball players taught me how to play basketball.
