Auggie was born with a facial difference that kept him out of school for years. In fifth grade, he discovers what it’s like to long for normalcy and also that difference can be the most meaningful teacher.
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson

When the sun comes up over the castle of Rocca Calascio, a small mountain village high up in the Italian Apennines, it’s like a silent, magic wonderland. One such sunrise struck Franco Cagnoli with a spiritual calling that led him to go on a mission (=task) that affected both the village and him deeply.
Rocca Calascio has seen no resident since 1957. Depopulation (人口减少) of rural or mountain villages in Italy began with the resettlement of villagers in the early 20th century, happening faster after World War II when people were attracted to urban jobs.
However, like many places, the area is enjoying a revival (复苏) and now home to some families. “To put it in romantic terms, there is a love story between me and the ancient building,” Cagnoli said as he showed visitors round the castle of Rocca Calascio. The castle, with foundations dating back about 1,000 years, is one of the highest in Europe. It began as a tower in a line of connected structures to control and protect the land that stretched inland from the Adriatic Sea.
Cagnoli, now 39, first saw Rocca Calascio when he was 16. He was on a road trip to find himself. “I arrived here as the morning sun lit up the castle. I was blinded by the light and since that day something inside me has changed,” he said. “I thought it was the most beautiful place. I felt special energies, deciding to help its rebirth.” He’s now the castle’s caretaker (看管者) and head of a cooperative whose members guide visitors.
“Besides temporary visitors, the complete revival has much to do with permanent residents. People of the previous generation didn’t appreciate the land they lived on,” Valeria Befani, a resident in the village, said. “Today’s teenagers, like my children, are proud of their land and are happy if they can stay here.”
24. What inspired Cagnoli to help revive Rocca Calascio?
A. His trip to find himself. B. The impressive scene of the village.
C. His love for ancient buildings. D. The historical importance of the castle.
25. How was Rocca Calascio affected by World War II?
A. Its population loss speeded up. B. It got left behind in economy.
C. Its buildings were damaged. D. It was known by more people.
26. Why was the castle built?
A. To attract people to visit. B. To reduce attack from waves.
C. To strengthen coastal defense. D. To protect the connected structures.
27. What might Befani agree with?
A. Views of different generations vary greatly. B. Reviving Rocca Calascio has a long way to go.
C. Teenagers doesn’t appreciate their hometown. D. The future of Rocca Calascio is full of promise.

To find out how effective language learning applications allow mobile users to study a new language anywhere and anytime, Shawn Loewen, a professor at Michigan State University (MSU), recently conducted a study focusing on a popular language learning app and e-learning platform first launched in 2007, to see if it really worked at teaching a new language.
“Despite the fact that millions globally are already using language learning apps, there is a lack of published research on their effect on speaking skills,” Loewen said. “Actually there are no other studies that have researched mobile language learning apps in this way. Therefore, this study makes an important contribution to the field.”
In the study, which is published in Foreign Language Annals, 85 undergraduate students at MSU used the app tor 12 weeks to learn Spanish. At the beginning of the study, the students took a pretest to examine their existing oral proficiency (熟练), vocabulary and grammar in Spanish. After 12 weeks, the 54 students who completed all study requirements took the same test again to see how much knowledge they had gained.
The study showed that nearly all the students improved in their Spanish language knowledge and ability to communicate. “The result proves that using the app can advance the development of oral communication skills and not just grammar and vocabulary as a previous study had shown,” Loewen said.
As one might expect, learning gains were related to the amount of time students used. The more time the learners used, the more progress they made. Also, no matter how convenient and effective a language learning app may be, what might be the most important is that learners stick with it.
28. What can we know about the app mentioned in the text?
A. It creates job opportunities for language learners. B. It conducts e-learning research.
C. It offers language learning. D. It publishes research results.
29. What does Loewen’s study focus on?
A. Speaking. B. Vocabulary. C. Reading D. Grammar.
30. How is the study carried out?
A. By studying previous studies. B. By researching applications.
C. By completing interviews. D. By doing experiments.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. The great importance of foreign languages B. A study of a language learning app
C. A way to learn a language D. The importance of learning a language
D
Whether rich or poor, parents who have books in the home increase the level of education their children will attain, according to a 20-year study led by Mariah Evans.
For years, educators have thought the strongest predictor (预测指标) of attaining high levels of education was having parents who were highly educated. But, the study showed that the difference between being raised in a bookless home compared to being raised in a home with a 500-book library has as great an effect on the level of education a child will attain as the difference between having parents who are barely literate (有文化的) and having parents who have a university education.
Being a sociologist, Evans was particularly interested to find that children of lesser-educated parents benefit the most from having books in the home. What kinds of investments should we make to help these kids get ahead? The results of this study indicate that getting some books into their homes is an inexpensive way that we can help these children succeed. Evans said, “Even a little bit goes a long way. Having as few as 20 books in the home still has a significant impact on motivating a child to a higher level of education, and the more books you add, the greater benefit the children get.”
The researchers were struck by the strong effect having books in the home had on children’s educational attainment even above and beyond such factors as education level of the parents, the father’s occupation or the economic level of the country.
Having books in the home is twice as important as the father’s education level, and more important than whether a child was brought up in a developing country or a developed country. Surprisingly, the difference in educational attainment for children born in developed country and children born in developing country was just 2 years, less than two-thirds of the effect that having 500 or more books in the home had on children.
32. In the past educators held a point of view that ________.
A. children whose parents are highly educated would attain high levels of education
B. children whose family had a library would possibly attain high levels of education
C. children who were born in poor families studied harder than those in rich families
D. parents’ level of education had nothing to do with their children’s levels of education
33. What does the underlined word “motivating” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Helping somebody to finish something. B. Making somebody want to do something.
C. Making somebody pretend to do something. D. Preventing somebody from achieving something.
34. Which of the following has the most important effect on the level of education a child will gain?
A. The economic level of the country. B. The father’s occupation.
C. Having books in the home. D. Education levels of parents.
35. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Reading books is good for the development of children.
B. Books in home have a great effect on children’s education levels.
C. Getting books into homes is good investment (投资) parents can make.
D. Children who get a higher level of education must have many books in their homes
According to a common saying, “Honesty is the best policy.” 36 Lying often seems like a good way to impress people or avoid blame for mistakes. Some people lie out of habit, without even realizing they’re doing it. But despite all this, honesty really is worth the effort.
One obvious reason for honesty is that lies are difficult to maintain. There’s always a chance that the person you lied to will find out the truth. 37
Lies are also difficult to hide because they are harder to remember than the truth. If you make up a story, you have to remember all the details. 38 But if you commit to telling the truth, you will never have trouble remembering. This saves you effort and makes conversations less stressful for you.
Another obvious reason to avoid lying is that lying can harm others. People who believe your lies might make bad decisions because of them. And a lie about someone else could destroy that person’s reputation. On a personal level, if your friends find out you lied to them, their feeling will be hurt. They will question whether they can trust you or wonder whether you care about them. In contrast, if you always tell the truth, you will develop a reputation for honesty. 39 Business deals, friendships, family and romantic relationships all depend on trust.
40 Sometimes it’s best to remain silent if your words might hurt someone else. Honesty means that when you speak, you tell the truth without holding any information back. When you do that, you will feel more relaxed and enjoy stronger relationships.
A. This will help you in every area of your life.
B. But in daily life, honesty can be difficult.
C. Is the gain from lying really worth the risk?
D. We will get others’ respect and appreciation if telling the truth.
E. Being honest is a basic principle for us to deal with others.
F. Honesty, however, doesn’t mean you have to say everything in your mind.
G. And the more lies you tell, the more stories you have to remember.

Dear Jim,
I’m happy to receive your letter and know you want to improve your health by joining sports club.
Of the two choices—jogging or yoga, both are highly recommended. Personally, I prefer jogging, which is a popular kind of exercise, because it can bring us many advantages. First it can build up our strength and make us healthy. Second it can get rid of our pressure and make us relaxed. Third it can prevent diseases and make us keep fit. Finally, it can also improve our patience. In a word, jogging is a wonderful form of exercise.
If you are involved in it, you can get more pleasure.
Yours,
Li Hua

W: I’ve bought this postcard to send to Emily. Do you have a stamp?

M: The time is seven thirty and here is radio JPD’s weather and traffic information this Thursday morning. Travelling will be difficult today because of heavy snow last night. Traffic is moving slowly on the M16 and M30 motorway and the police say the M43 will stay closed for more than an hour, until quarter to nine. In the city, an accident at the North Street means that it is closed to all cars, and drivers must use New Street or Lake Street. Because of this, some journeys by bus are taking longer. The number sixteen bus to the city center is really late. There are also problems for railway passengers because of thick snow on the tracks. All trains to Oxford are late and there will be no trains to London until lunchtime. Passengers should phone 07223691 for the latest information about trains. This afternoon, it is going to be very windy, with snow this evening. So wear some warm clothes if you have to go out! For more weather information, look at our website or read our latest magazine.

根据第二段第一句 “For years, educators have thought the strongest predictor of attaining high levels of education was having parents who were highly educated.”
在第三段划线词的上下文 ““Even a little bit goes a long way. …the greater benefit the children get” 即使是一点点书,也能大有帮助……你家的书越多,孩子得到的好处就越大。” 可知,书对孩子有很大影响。所以划线词的句子 “Having as few as 20 books in the home still has a significant impact on motivating a child to a higher level of education” 这句话是说 “即使家里只有20本书,在激励孩子接受更高层次的教育方面仍然有很大的影响”。
根据文章第四段 “The researchers were struck by the strong effect having books in the home had on children’s educational attainment even above and beyond such factors as education level of the parents, the father’s occupation or the economic level of the country.” 题干中的the most important effect on the level of education a child will gain就是替换了文章中的 “the strong effect (having books in the home) had on children’s educational attainment even above and beyond” 家里有书对孩子的教育水平的影响最大。
根据倒数第二段 “The researchers were struck by the strong effect having books in the home had on children’s educational attainment even above and beyond such factors as education level of the parents, the father’s occupation or the economic level of the country” (研究人员感到震惊的是,家里有书对孩子的教育程度的强烈影响,甚至超过了父母的教育水平、父亲的职业或国家的经济水平等因素。)
