设计说明
本课时通过给学生展示有关不同国家的问候方式的图片, 让学生结对练习讨论, 由此激发学生的兴趣。通过听力练习, 让学生学会听取关键信息, 掌握听力技巧。引导学生学习会话, 培养学生阅读与交际的能力。指导学生学习会话中出现的知识点, 加深对会话的理解。最后, 借助对应练习, 让学生能够熟练运用所学知识。
教学目标
通过本课时的教学, 让学生达成以下目标:
1. 知识目标
(1)掌握本课时新单词: custom, bow, kiss, greet。
(2)掌握重点句子:
①What are you supposed to do...?
②You are (not) supposed to do...
(3)掌握be supposed to和be expected to句式。
2. 能力目标
(1) 能听懂谈论身势语的对话。
(2) 能运用所学词汇和句型谈论不同国家的问候方式。
3. 情感目标
通过了解不同国家的文化礼仪, 做到懂礼仪, 知礼节, 尊重他人, 提高自己的礼仪修养。

Step 1 Warm-up
1. Ask the students to work in pairs and discuss the following question.
How do people greet one another in countries around the world?
2. Show some pictures to help them answer the question.
3. Ask them to work in pairs. Ask and answer according to the given pictures.
What are people supposed to do when they meet in this country?
Sample:
S1: What are people supposed to do when they meet in this country?
S2: They are supposed to shake hands.

Step 2 Presentation
1. Listening
1. T: What do people do when they meet for the first time?
2. Ask the students to guess the answers in 1a.
3. Listen to the recording and ask the students to check their answers in 1a.
4. Tell them to pay attention to the key words while listening and try to write them down.
5. Check the answers.

6. Ask the students to listen again and read after it.
7. Explain some important language points of the listening material.
2. Conversation
1. Ask the students to make conversations about what people in different countries do when they meet for the first time. Talk about the countries in 1a or other countries.
Sample:
A: What are people in Korea supposed to do when they meet for the first time?
B: They’re supposed to bow. How about in the United States?
A: In the United States, they’re expected to shake hands.
2. Encourage some of the students to show their conversations.
3. Practice
Maria is an exchange student. Last night she had dinner at an American friend’s house. Listen and check (√) the mistakes Maria made.
(1) Ask the students to look at the picture and the words in the box in 2a.
(2) Play the recording and ask the students to check (√) the mistakes Maria made.
(3) Check the answers in pairs.

1. Ask the students to read aloud the listening text in 2a.
2. Ask the students to role-play the conversation between Maria and Dan.

3. Ask the students the following questions:
(1) Why did Maria make such mistakes?
(2) What should we do to avoid the mistakes?

4. Ask the students to watch a video and answer the questions.
5. Role play the conversation in pairs.

Step 4 Language points
1. In your country, what are you supposed to do when you meet someone for the first time?
在你们国家, 与某人初次见面时你应该做什么?
be supposed to 意为“应该”, 后接动词原形, 相当于should或ought to, 用来表示劝告、建议、义务、责任等。其否定形式为 be not supposed to, 意为“不应该”。
We are supposed to keep the classroom clean. 我们应该保持教室干净。Children are not supposed to play soccer in the street.
孩子们不应该在街上踢足球。
Am I supposed to bow or kiss? 我应该鞠躬还是亲吻?
2. You’re supposed to shake hands. 你应该握手。
shake hands 意为“握手”, 是固定短语。
shake(shook, shaken) 既可用作及物动词, 也可用作不及物动词, 意为“摇动; 抖动”。
Shaking hands is our custom. 握手是我们的风俗。
He shook his head sadly. 他难过地摇了摇头。
The whole house shakes when a train goes past.
火车驶过时, 整座房子都颤动起来。
【拓展】shake hands with sb./shake sb. by the hand意为“与某人握手”, 而shake one’s hand则指“握某人的手”, 强调一方的动作, 故hand用单数。
We usually shake hands with each other.
我们通常相互握手。
She shook the boy’s hand and patted him on the shoulder lightly.
她握了握那个男孩的手, 并轻轻地拍了拍他的肩膀。
3. I made some new friends. 我交了一些新朋友。
make friends意为“交朋友”。make friends with sb. 意为“与某人交朋友”。
I find it difficult to make friends with Jim. 我发现和吉姆交朋友很难。
注意: (1)该短语中的friend须用复数形式。
(2)该短语表示瞬间动作, 若要表示延续性动作, 须用be friends (with sb.)。
4. But a funny thing happened. 但发生了一件有趣的事情。
happen 不及物动词, 意为“发生”。
(1)“sth. happen(s)+时间/地点”意为“某时/某地发生了某事”。
An accident happened in our neighborhood just now.
刚才在我们社区发生了一起事故。
(2) sth. happen(s) to sb.意为“某人发生了某事”。
A car accident happened to David yesterday. 昨天戴维出了车祸。
注意: happen是不及物动词, 不能用于被动语态。
这个故事发生在上周。
误: The story was happened last week.
正: The story happened last week.
辨析: happen与take place
happen用来指某个事件突然发生, 强调偶然性, 主语往往是表示事件、发生事故等的名词。
take place常指某事按规律、预先布置或按计划发生或进行, 尤指“举行”, 举行不含偶然的意味。

【拓展】happen还意为“碰巧, 恰好”, 用法如下:
(1) sb. happen(s) to do sth. 意为“某人碰巧做某事”。
I happened to meet a friend of mine in the street yesterday.
昨天我碰巧在街上遇到了我的一个朋友。
(2)“It happens + that从句.”意为“碰巧……”, 可与happen to do sth. 进行同义转换。
It happened that she went out when we called her.
=She happened to go out when we called her.
我们给她打电话时她碰巧出去了。
5. So I just stood there with my hand out. 所以我只是伸着手站在那里.
“with+宾语+宾语补足语”结构, 在句中作伴随状语。宾语补足语的形式有现在分词、过去分词、形容词、副词等。
He is sleeping in the bedroom with the window open.
他在卧室里开着窗户睡觉。
6. Finally, I returned the bow. 最后我鞠躬还礼。
return 此处用作及物动词, 意为“归还”, 通常接表示事物的名词或代词作宾语, 若表示“把某物还给某人或还到某处”, 则用 return sth. to..., 相当于 give sth. back to...。
Return the books to the library on time, please. 请将书按时归还到图书馆。
【拓展】return还可用作不及物动词, 意为“返回, 回来, 回去”, 相当于 come/go back。

7. I held out my hand and to my surprise, she kissed me on both sides of my face!
我伸出手(想要握手) , 可令我吃惊的是, 她亲吻了我的双颊!
to one’s surprise 意为“使/让某人吃惊的是”, 其中surprise用作名词, 此处意为“惊奇; 诧异”, 还可意为“令人惊奇的事”。
To our surprise, the teacher praised Tom instead of punishing him.
让我们吃谅的是, 老师表扬了汤姆而不是惩罚他。
The man had a look of surprise on his face. 那个人脸上一副惊讶的表情。
I have a surprise for you. 我告诉你一件意想不到的事。
【拓展】 in surprise 惊奇地; be surprised at.. 对……感到吃惊; be surprised to do sth. 做某事令人惊讶
Jean looked at her mother in surprise. 琼惊奇地看着她母亲。
We are very surprised at the news. 我们对这个消息感到非常吃惊。
I was surprised to know her painful experience. 知道她的悲痛经历我很惊讶。

1. Use the expressions “be supposed to do” and “be expected to do” to write a passage about different customs in different countries.
