设计说明
本课时通过一些图片让学生描述其感受入手, 导入新课; 在学习完本课时的生词后逐步进入对课文的阅读和理解, 通过速读和详读完成不同的阅读任务, 让学生理解文本内容, 并特别注意文中一些习语和短语的运用。然后进行对话的角色扮演、进行语言输出, 并体会彼得心理变化的过程。最后对本课时的重要语言点进行总结和讲解, 让学生掌握, 并通过对应的练习来检测学生学习效果。
教学目标
通过本课时的学习, 让学生达成以下目标:
1. 知识目标
(1)掌握本课时新单词及短语: weight, shoulder, goal, coach, kick, besides, teammate, courage, guy, pull, relief, nod, agreement, fault, disappoint, let…down, kick sb. off, be hard on sb. , rather than, pull together。
(2)掌握重点句子:
①He was really worried that his coach might kick him off the team.
②The other half is learning how to communicate with your teammates and learning from your mistakes.
2. 能力目标
(1)能够比较熟练地运用英语语音知识朗读课文, 能够体会彼得的心理的变化。
(2)学会运用一些常用习语和短语。

Step 1 Lead-in
Show some pictures to the students and ask their feelings about the pictures.

Step 2 Warm-up
1. Teach students to read the new words and phrases three times and then let them make some sentences with them.
weight, shoulder, goal, let…down, coach, kick, kick sb. off, be hard on sb. , besides, teammate, courage, rather than, guy, pull, pull together, relief, nod, agreement, fault, disappoint
2. Have students talk about the following questions in pairs.
Have you ever made a mistake? How did it make you feel?
3. Let students talk to their partner about what happened.
For example:
Last night I stayed up late to watch a football match on TV. I was too tired that I fell asleep in the class this morning. It made me feel very angry with myself.
4. Ask them to talk about what they can do if they make a mistake. Encourage them to speak aloud in the class.
For example:
(1) If possible, come up with a plan to solve the problem.
(2) Apologize to those effects.
(3) Find some happy things to let you release from sad emotions.
Step 3 Reading
Pre-reading
Look at the picture and guess whether or not the soccer team wins the game.
Fast reading
1. Play the recording and ask students to listen to the passage and then read the passage in silence. Pay attention to the new words and expressions.
2. Ask students to read the passage quickly and number the events in the correct order.

Careful reading
1. Ask students to read the story carefully and answer the following questions.
1. Why did Peter feel angry and worried?
2. What advice did Peter’s father offer him?
3. Do you agree with Peter’s father? Why or why not?
4. What happened after Peter told his teammates that he was sorry?
5. Why did Peter think that he was on a winning team even though they lost the last game?
Answers: 1. He was angry with himself for missing an important goal and letting his team down. He was worried that his coach might kick him off the team.
2. His father advised him not to be too hard on himself but to learn how to communicate with his teammates and learn from his mistake.
3. Yes. Because soccer is about team effort. It is more meaningful to learn from one’s mistakes and do better in the future.

4. Let students read the story again. Try to find idioms or phrases from the story to replace the underlined parts of these sentences.

Post-reading
1. Ask students to role-play a conversation between Peter and his father according to the story.

1. He felt like there was a heavy weight on his shoulders as he walked home alone. 当他独自走在回家的路上时, 他觉得双肩沉重。
(1) weigh v.称……的重量; 衡量→weight n.重量

2. He had let his whole team down. 他让全队都失望了。
let sb. down 使……失望或沮丧

as soon as表示“一……就……”, 引导时间状语从句, 遵循“主将从现”原则, 即主句用将来时, 从句用一般现在时表将来。

4. But whatever it was, don’t be too hard on yourself.
但不管是什么, 不要对自己太苛刻。
Whatever you do , I will behind you. 无论你做什么, 我都会支持你。
(1) whatever “无论什么”, 是连接代词, 引导让步状语从句,可以这样用的连接代词或连接副词还有whoever, whichever, whenever, wherever, however等。
whatever = no matter what 无论什么
whoever = no matter who 无论谁
wherever = no matter where 无论哪里
Whatever you do, do your best. = No matter what you do, do your best.
不管你做什么,尽最大努力做好。
Whoever telephones, tell him I am out.
= No matter who telephones, tell him I am out.
无论谁打电话,告诉他我出去了。
Wherever he may be, he will be happy.
= No matter where he may be, he will be happy.
无论他可能在哪儿,他都会很快乐。
(2) be hard on sb.“对……很严厉; 要求很苛刻; 苛待(为难)某人”。
Don’t be too hard on him—he’s only a child.
不要对他太严厉——他只是个孩子。
5. Besides, winning or losing is only half the game. 而且, 输赢只是比赛的一半。
辨析: besides与 except
(1) besides“除……以外还有”,指的是“已有……另加上”,表示包括后面提到的人或物在内。
They went to the cinema besides Lily. (Lily也去了)
(2) except“除去”,着重在除去的部分。表示不包括后面所提到的人或物在内。
They went to the cinema except Lily. (Lily没去)
6. The next day, Peter went to soccer practice with courage rather than fear in his heart. 第二天, 彼得心里并没有害怕, 而是勇敢地去参加足球训练。
(1) courage不可数名词 勇气; 勇敢
lose courage灰心丧气 take courage 鼓起勇气
(2) rather than并非; 而不是(是一个并列连词)
The most valuable thing is time, rather than money.
最珍贵的东西是时间, 而不是钱。
