Mapping out the future
Last summer, my parents and I took a drive to another state. Before we started on our road trip, we packed up the car with snacks, water, and music. Thankfully, we also had our GPS packed. A few hours into the trip, we took a wrong turn. But our trusty GPS pulled up a map of that area and got us back or track in no time. It made me wonder: Who creates maps in the first place? After some searching online I learned that the people who map out roads, mountains, oceans and other places around the world are called cartographers (制图师). I did some reading about the career. Here’s what I found:
What does a cartographer do?
Cartographers, also called mapmakers, study and interpret (诠释) geographic information. They use this information to make detailed maps of places around the world. Some of these maps are digital (数字的). They are often used in GPS systems. Other maps are printed in books. To do their work, cartographers put together information from many different places. They also use ground surveys. Some do ground surveys themselves. Most cartographers, however, depend on surveyors (测绘员) for this important information. Surveyors collect information for mapmaking. They measure land, air space, and water areas.
What does it take to be a cartographer?
Most cartographers have a bachelor (学士) degree. The degree might be in cartography (制图学), geography, or something similar. Students who are interested in becoming cartographers should learn as much as they can about geography. It also helps to take courses in maths and computer science.
With the rise of computer-based tools such as GPS systems, cartographers need stronger computer skills than they did in the past.
How much do cartographers make?
The average (平均) yearly salary (薪水) for cartographers is $54, 000. The lowest 10 percent earns (挣钱) less than $32, 000. The top 10 percent earns more than $92, 000.
________
In the U. S., job opportunities (机会) for cartographers are expected to grow. This is because of the increasing use of maps in the army. Also, digital maps have increasingly become a main part of many GPS systems and Web sites.
Based on what I’ve read about cartographers, I’d say that their work is very important to a lot of people. Next time a map keeps me from getting lost, I’ll be sure to thank a cartographer!
31.In Para 1, the author included his experience in order to ________.
A.prove that a GPS is only needed when driving to another place
B.show that it is important to pack snacks for a trip
C.provide a reason why a mapmaker’s work is important
D.show that the GPS is not always reliable (可靠的)
32.Surveyors can do all these following things except ________.
A.do some measuring B.do some mapping C.collect information D.do ground surveys
33.Elizabeth begins working as a cartographer with a starting salary of $37, 500. Every year, her salary increases by $1, 500. If she continues in this position, her salary will be ________ for her 12th year of work.
A.of average B.below average
C.of the lowest 10 percent D.of the top 10 percent
34.Which one can be put in the blank?
A.Will more cartographers be needed? B.Will the cartographers be replaced by robots?
C.Why is it hard for cartographers to find jobs? D.Why do cartographers make different maps?
35.The article would be most useful as a source for a student research project on ________.

I grew up in the countryside of Poland (波兰). It’s an area where skiing is popular, but my family was poor. I couldn’t afford to ride the ski lift (运送滑雪者的吊椅), so I used to hike up with the skis on my back. It turned out that this was good practice.
K2 (乔戈里峰) is nicknamed “savage (野蛮的) mountain”. You hear sad stories: For every four people who reach the top of the mountain, one dies. I was too afraid to even think about skiing down it. Even the best mountain climbers thought it impossible.
But that changed after a training expedition (考察) to Broad Peak. I got a clear look at K2’s massive face, and it encouraged me. Over time, my skills improved and, by 2017, I didn’t feel the fear anymore. I began preparations.
Why try such a feat (壮举)? I love nature, and I love setting goals. To be the first to do it just adds to the challenge. Fear is an important part of life, but to ski down K2, I had to stop being afraid.
At the base camp, I felt calm and prepared. There were no moods or doubts — I just knew I could do it. But there were challenges. At the third base camp, 7,000 meters up, my safety guy suffered serious back pain. We waited for 36 hours after he got better, and I decided to continue. In total, it took about three days to reach the top.
For many climbers, getting to the top of K2 would be the defining (决定性) moment of their lives. For me, it was where the real challenge began. Skiing down a mountain requires patience and endurance (耐力).
The most dangerous part was the Messner Traverse. It’s pure ice, up to a 75-degree angle in places, with drops on either side. You need to keep your turns and movements smooth and confident. No one had tried it before, so it was a relief (解脱) to cross it.
In total, going down the mountain took about seven hours. When I finally skied into camp, I simply lay in the snow, tired in both mental and body.
I’m so proud of what I achieved. No one thought it could be done. It taught me the value of patience and that nobody else can make your dreams come true.

①What do a student in China, an office worker in the UK and an astronaut in space all have in common? They all eat instant noodles (方便面). And they’re not alone—over 100 billion servings (一份) of instant noodles are sold around the world each year, making them one of the world’s most successful industrial foods (大规模生产的加工食品). But how did this happen?
②Put simply, they’re cheap to produce and cheap to buy, which was exactly what their creator (发明者) expected. Momofuku Ando, a Japanese businessman, spent a year improving the recipe (配方) just after the Second World War. He wanted to make something similar to traditional Japanese ramen noodles (拉面). He used the wheat flour (面粉) donated to Japan by the US government. His creation was quickly popular, playing an important role in Japan’s economic (经济) rise after the war. Even in the year 2000 – according to a poll by the Fuji Research Institute – instant noodles were voted Japan’s most successful invention. They were much more popular than high-speed trains, laptops or karaoke.
③But Japanese people are not alone in their devotion to instant noodles. According to the World’s Instant Noodles Association, China, Indonesia, Vietnam (越南) and India—in that order—the sales of instant noodles in these countries were all bigger than Japan in 2021. Instant noodles’ popularity abroad simply depends on how easy they are to adapt to (适应) local tastes. In Thailand, for example, you can get green curry flavour (味道), while in Mexico the noodles are decorated with lime and salsa. And it seems that buyers have grown to expect new creation. Nissin, the food company set up by Ando, created over 300 products yearly, just in Japan, according to employee Kasura Suzuki.
④Different from those who love instant noodles, Some people do not like the noodles very much. Their rise in popularity has come at an environmental cost—they’re made with palm oil (棕榈油), as a result, more trees are cut down. Also, their packaging is plastic. And while they are a hot, tasty and filling meal, instant noodles don’t have much nutritional (营养的) value, and include high levels of salt and fat. Anyway, instant noodles are undoubtedly lifesavers in emergency or extreme (极端) situations.
⑤More than 60 years after their invention, instant noodles have become the default (默认) food for anyone short on money, time, or even a kitchen.
41.How many servings of instant noodles are eaten around the world yearly?
A.Over 100 billion. B.More than 60. C.Over 300. D.2000.
42.What kind of Instant noodles did the creator want to make?
A.Nutritional. B.Salty. C.Cheap. D.Convenient (方便).
43.The sales of the instant noodles depend on how well people like the noodles. Which country ate the most instant noodles in 2021? Please choose the correct order.
A.Japan > India > China > Indonesia > Vietnam
B.India > China >Japan > Indonesia > Vietnam
C.China > India > Vietnam > Indonesia > Japan
D.China > Indonesia > Vietnam > India >Japan
44.What can we learn about instant noodles from the passage?
A.People around the world all eat instant noodles.
B.The more people eat instant noodles, the more trees may be cut down.
C.Only people short of money, time, or even a kitchen choose instant noodles.
D.A Japanese businessman made instant noodles the same as traditional Japanese ramen noodles.
45.What is the correct structure for the passage?
A. B. C. D.

The typical cellphone user touches his or her phone 2,617 times every day. Most people spend 3 hours on their phones each day. The influences of this usage (用法,用量) are shocking: reducing the quality of conversations and influencing short-term memory and problem solving. And the relation between phone addiction (成瘾) and mental (精神) illness is alarming. How can you cut down on your usage of cellphones? The following are some methods suggested by experts.
Keep to your timetable.
You could set alarms (闹钟) to make sure how often you can check your phone. For example, every half-hour, every 45 minutes or every hour. When your alarm sounds, read and deal with the messages and then put down the phone. To reduce response anxiety (反应焦虑), tell your friends or family that you may not answer their messages as quickly as you used to.
Create no-phone time zones (时区).
During working hours, if you’re upset from time to time by the ringing of your phone, you won’t remain careful with the work. Therefore, you could create a no-phone time zone. Shut your phone for at least 2 hours of your day, when you’re very busy with your work. So you can pay great attention to the work in front of you.
Reduce your reliance (依赖).
One idea is to replace some smartphone functions (功能) with real objects. For example, buy a radio alarm clock instead of depending on your phone to wake you up, and start your new year by buying a new notebook. So you can write your daily activities and to-do list not in your phone but in the notebook.
Put a hairband (发带) around your phone.
When placed in the middle of the phone, the hairband allows users to answer phone calls easily, but makes other uses of the phone more difficult. No matter when you want to use your phone, this brings about a mindfulness exercise and makes you ask yourself what your intention (意图) is. If you really want to use the phone, set your intention for why and remove the hairband. The practice helps avoid mindlessly unlocking your phone every 3 minutes.
Choose the methods most suitable for your situation and make efforts to avoid too much use of cellphones.
