(2022·武汉高中毕业生调研考试)No high school exchange student chooses the small town in the Midwest over California or New York City, but Ole has enjoyed and learned to the point that I don't think he regrets it anyway. It has been a good adventure for us and I think for him too.
Ole's stay was inspiring, entertaining, and fun.We enjoyed his time here and have learned almost as much as he has,I'm sure.He is a very wellrounded kid with many experiences, has a very good understanding of America, and speaks English very well.He and we,now take many of the things he initially was amazed by for granted. It has been fun watching him experience a lot of these.
He got to experience playing soccer for his school. We went to many games and he was fortunate enough to have a coach and a team that were kind enough to a new kid and gave him much playing time.Since he has had no school sports before, the whole concept of having your classmates cheer you on at regional competitions and having fans watch the games, let alone having the competition on TV,was a huge thing for him.The team also gave him a bunch of immediate friends and acquaintances. He liked being able to go to the high school basketball and football games too.He also got to go several of the school dances,a thing he doesn't do in his hometown.
We do feel fortunate to have had a kid who made an effort to get out and meet people, ask for rides, but was careful about who he hung out with. Our three kids did not meet any high school exchange students that were as well known in the school or as well liked and accepted as Ole had been.
We do expect that this hosting experience is the start of a lifelong relationship.

(2022·厦门高三毕业班第二次质检)I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province,on the historic Tea Horse Road.I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet,I was blown away.I couldn't imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world.
Last May,I met Paul.He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the ShuYandu Dao(the Sichuan to India trading route),the Southern Silk Road, the travels of the 17thcentury Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20thcentury American botanist Joseph Rock.He also talked of Xuanzang.
I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28,2021,we set out.Our days were simple:walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep.
We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us;some gave us directions;some invited us into their home to take a rest; some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds.
Together,we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked on ancient paths through mountains,I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging me to be careful on the road.
Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul,I came to a realization.Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable,is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet.A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us,shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other's cultures.

Chemical engineers at UNSW Sydney have found a way to make“green”ammonia(氨)from air, water and renewable electricity. In a paper published in Energy&EnvironmentalScience, the authors say that ammonia synthesis(合成)was one of the critical achievements of the 20th century. When used in fertilisers that significantly increase the output of food crops,it could enable agriculture to sustain an everexpanding global population.
But since the beginning of the 1900s when it was first employed, production of ammonia has been energyintensive—requiring temperatures higher than 400℃ and pressures greater than 200 atm—and all powered by fossil fuels.Dr.Emma Lovell,a coauthor of the paper from UNSW,says the traditional way to make ammonia, known as the HaberBosch process,is only costeffective when it is produced on a massive scale due to the huge amounts of energy and expensive materials required and that it produces more CO2 than any other chemicalmaking reaction.
“In addition to the big carbon footprint left by the HaberBosch process, having to produce millions of tonnes of ammonia in centralised locations means even more energy is required to transport it around the world, not to mention the risks that go with storing large amounts of it in one place,”says Dr.Lovell.“And we saw tragically in Beirut how potentially dangerous storing ammonium nitrate(硝酸铵)can be.”
Dr.Lovell and her colleagues therefore looked at how to produce it cheaply,on a smaller scale and using renewable energy.Their new production method does not rely on fossil fuel resources, and doesn't give off CO2 either.
“And once it becomes available commercially, the technology could be used to produce ammonia directly on site and on demand farmers could even do this on site using our technology to make fertilisers—which means we negate the need for storage and transport. There's a huge benefit to society as well as the health of the planet,” Dr.Lovell says.
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了悉尼新南威尔士大学的化学工程师们发明了一种用空气、水和可再生电力制作氨的新方法以及生产氨的传统方法的缺点及存放、运输问题。
