Silly Street Learn & Play

Free
It is an educational app based on a physical game that aims to build character through play. Kids can play solo or with up to 6 players. They can read the directions or turn on the sound to have them narrated(叙述). The free game includes six card packs that target curiosity, adaptability, and other character skills through entertaining tasks. The prompts(提示) on the cards encourage kids to express themselves.
Cramble

Along with the Quiz game mode, there’s also a Compare mode in which players read mix-and-match comparisons.
Spaceteam
age 9+
Free
It is a free cooperative game for two to eight players that requires a separate device for each player. It works best when everyone is on the same Wi-Fi connection and in the same room. Kids will need to be confident readers as there are a number of made-up words that need to quickly be read aloud or recognized on screen. It also tends to get loud, so it’s best played where it won’t bother others.
Geocaching
age 14+
$9.99
This expensive but very cool GPS app makes it possible for the whole family to go geocaching, a high-tech treasure hunt game. Geocaches can be hidden in rough terrain(地形) and public locations. In the Chinese reality series “Forget Me Not Café,” five seniors with Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔兹海默症) work as restaurant servers and are enthusiastic about socializing and living a fulfilling life despite their condition. After watching the show, three Singapore Institute of Technology students, Nashita Fatima, Chen Zihan and Fang Qian, were deeply inspired by their efforts to raise awareness of the condition.
The three have decided to play their part in helping people with Alzheimer’s disease. They signed up as participants in the global Huawei ICT(Information and Communication Technology) competition to create smart glasses called Forever-Smart Glasses.

Oxygen. Clean air. Shade. Trees provide people with all sorts of benefits. A major one: removing carbon dioxide(CO₂) from the air and storing it. That makes trees an important part of the fight against climate change. But they only hold onto carbon as long as they’re alive. Once they die, trees release that CO₂ back into the atmosphere. This movement of carbon between forests and the atmosphere is called a carbon flux, notes Roel Brienen, a forest ecologist at the University of Leeds.
“These fluxes affect the amount of carbon a forest can store,” he explains. It’s like the way a bank account works. Forests store carbon the way a bank account stores money. If you spend more than you make, your bank account will shrink. And it will grow if you put more money into the account than you take out. Which direction a forest’s “carbon account” goes has a huge influence on climate.
Recent studies have found that trees around the world are growing faster than ever. Rising atmospheric CO₂ is probably driving that rapid growth, Brienen says. High levels of this gas are boosting temperatures, which speed tree growth. Brienen also found that fast-growing tree species, in general, live shorter lives. That quickens their release of carbon back into the air— which is disappointing news for global warming. Brienen then examined what factors might influence tree growth, including rainfall, soil type and how crowded a forest was. None was linked to early tree death.
Levels of carbon in our forests could return to those from before the increases in growth, Brienen says. That does not mean planting trees won’t help fight climate change, but which trees are used could have a big impact. A forest of mostly fast-growing trees would store less carbon over the long term. It would therefore have less value for carbon storage projects.
“We must understand, however, that the only way to bring down CO₂ levels is to stop emitting(排放) it into the atmosphere,” says Brienen.
11、How does the author explain “a carbon flux”?
A. By describing the process. B. By giving examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
12、What may speed tree growth according to Brienen?
A. An increase in CO₂ levels. B. Crowdedness of a forest.
C. Rich carbon in the soil. D. The long rainy season.
13、What should carbon storage projects do?
A. Ban(禁止) the emission of gases into the atmosphere.
B. Plant trees with a long growth cycle.
C. Remove dead trees from forests.
D. Plant as many trees as possible.
14、What can be the best title for the text?
A. Fast-growing trees may add to climate crisis.
B. Climate change is cutting the number of trees.
C. Is planting trees the answer to climate change?
D. What are the best carbon-trapping trees to plant?
Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding(衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.
I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say, “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right,or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.
15、Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?
A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.
B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.
C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.
D. Move an object out of the way before it trips(绊倒) someone.
16、Why did the author decide to go to her office on Good Friday?
A. To keep her appointment with the eye doctor.
B. To meet her father who was already an old man.
C. To join in the holiday celebration of the company.
D. To finish her work before the deadline approached.
17、Which word can best replace the underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3?
A. Abandoned. B. Lacked. C. Avoided. D. Wasted.
18、What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Emotional Well-being B. The Two Saddest Words
C. The Most Useful Rule D. The Peace of Mind

36、答案:
Dear Mark,
I’m glad to receive your email asking for my opinion on making a future career plan. I think it’s very necessary for senior high students to make the plan.
Living without an aim is like sailing without a compass. With a plan for your future in mind, you won’t get lost when it’s time to choose a university and a major. And a major suited to you is a guarantee for your success in your career.
As for how to make a plan for a future career, I suppose the first thing to consider is your interests and personal qualities. Find a career that is fit for you and brings you joy. Second, you’d better consult a professional, who may provide practical guidance for you. Besides, some career tests may be equally helpful!
Please write back so we can have a further discussion.
Yours,
Li Hua
