Volunteering was not something that peaked my interest until a couple of years ago. I was not in an environment which talked about or encouraged volunteering back then, therefore I never saw it as something that could help both me and the community. I just felt like that is something people who have a lot of free time do. My view of volunteering changed when I started my university.
When I was around 19, I volunteered in schools and kindergartens, which were closely connected to my university degree, as that was what I felt most comfortable doing. Later, when I realized that I'm being quite stagnant —I didn't really get anything new out of opportunities closely tied to my field of study, I decided to branch out by volunteering at some events which are a bit out of my comfort zone. I volunteered at events like the Gymnastics World Cup, different Art Festivals and similar places where I didn't necessarily participate as a creator but as a coordinator of other volunteers.
The most important and life— changing volunteering experience for me came in 2018 when I decided that volunteering locally just was not enough anymore and I went to volunteer abroad. I spent a month and a half in Romania teaching children with fewer opportunities English. That experience not only helped me to better my teaching skills, but also completely changed me as a person, making me meet people from all over the world.
All of these experiences brought me here, on an ESN(Erasmus Student Network) project in Zagreb at home. This is a project I've been excited for a long time because it meant
I was going to change my surroundings for a longer period of time, which obviously meant more challenges and more personal growth for me. Don't ever let anyone tell you that volunteering is something you shouldn't do, because it's one of the best things you could ever do, both for yourself and for the people you're going to help along the way.

Nowadays, smartphones fill us with text messages. Social media attack us with endless notices. Many consumers are buying the latest digital devices, from tablets and fitness trackers to commercial drones. Simple living seems to be a thing of the past.
Thoreau would beg to differ. As a writer who claimed the value of simplicity almost two centuries ago, he went against his time. He lived during the height of the Industrial Age, distinguished by the rise of huge factories and powerful machines such as steam engines. Thoreau withdrew from city life to live alone in the woods. He brought with him only the necessities of life and wrote about this adventure in his book Walden.
In Walden, Thoreau is basically making a philosophical statement: We are not living deliberate or meaningful lives, thanks to modern technology. We created powerful machines to make life more convenient. Unfortunately, these machines have done the opposite. In his words, "Men have become the tools of their tools".
When technology causes that much distraction and confusion, it may be healthy to simplify life by shortening these technological use. Personally, I've done so in two ways. First, I don't use data on my cellphone. I only use it to call or text. Second, I quit most social media. As a result, my technology distracts me very little, which allows me to live in. less confusion and, therefore, more deliberation. Sure, that's not as extreme as Thoreau-moving to the woods, but it's a realistic move I can make toward a more meaningful life.
One final clarification: Thoreau's message of simplicity isn't about rejecting all technology. It is, however, rejecting technological consumerism, or compulsively buying more technology for the sake of having more technology. This is why Walden is such an important book for technology education. Simplicity means minimizing material distractions so as to maximize life's meaning.

To realize this goal, the company has outlined a Carbon Neutrality Roadmap that focuses on five pathways: energy efficiency; renewable energy; electrification; carbon capture, usage and storage(CCUS); and green/blue hydrogen.

Partnerships are also vital in addressing plastic waste. I immediately called my husband and he didn't answer. I was thinking he never answered his phone. I called 2 more times saying please answer the phone to myself. I was getting pretty upset thinking what I should do. I got out of the car and looked under it and smelled gas. Then I checked the oil and water. Luckily, both were good! My sister went into the gas station and said to the clerk if he knew anyone who could help us and then said pray for us as she made her way to the rest room.

Volunteering was not something that peaked my interest until a couple of years ago. I was not in an environment which talked about or encouraged volunteering back then, therefore I never saw it as something that could help both me and the community. I just felt like that is something people who have a lot of free time do. My view of volunteering changed when I started my university.
When I was around 19, I volunteered in schools and kindergartens, which were closely connected to my university degree, as that was what I felt most comfortable doing. Later, when I realized that I'm being quite stagnant —I didn't really get anything new out of opportunities closely tied to my field of study, I decided to branch out by volunteering at some events which are a bit out of my comfort zone. I volunteered at events like the Gymnastics World Cup, different Art Festivals and similar places where I didn't necessarily participate as a creator but as a coordinator of other volunteers.
The most important and life— changing volunteering experience for me came in 2018 when I decided that volunteering locally just was not enough anymore and I went to volunteer abroad. I spent a month and a half in Romania teaching children with fewer opportunities English. That experience not only helped me to better my teaching skills, but also completely changed me as a person, making me meet people from all over the world.
All of these experiences brought me here, on an ESN(Erasmus Student Network) project in Zagreb at home. This is a project I've been excited for a long time because it meant

Nowadays, smartphones fill us with text messages. Social media attack us with endless notices. Many consumers are buying the latest digital devices, from tablets and fitness trackers to commercial drones. Simple living seems to be a thing of the past.
Thoreau would beg to differ. As a writer who claimed the value of simplicity almost two centuries ago, he went against his time. He lived during the height of the Industrial Age, distinguished by the rise of huge factories and powerful machines such as steam engines. Thoreau withdrew from city life to live alone in the woods. He brought with him only the necessities of life and wrote about this adventure in his book Walden.
In Walden, Thoreau is basically making a philosophical statement: We are not living deliberate or meaningful lives, thanks to modern technology. We created powerful machines to make life more convenient. Unfortunately, these machines have done the opposite. In his words, "Men have become the tools of their tools".
When technology causes that much distraction and confusion, it may be healthy to simplify life by shortening these technological use. Personally, I've done so in two ways. First, I don't use data on my cellphone. I only use it to call or text. Second, I quit most social media. As a result, my technology distracts me very little, which allows me to live in. less confusion and, therefore, more deliberation. Sure, that's not as extreme as Thoreau-moving to the woods, but it's a realistic move I can make toward a more meaningful life.
One final clarification: Thoreau's message of simplicity isn't about rejecting all technology. It is, however, rejecting technological consumerism, or compulsively buying more technology for the sake of having more technology. My husband is a mechanic and each year gives my 230,000+ miles car good checkup. He will come for me if I need help.
Here is how my miracle happened on Interstate 85 North in South Carolina. Heading north to take my sweet sister home to Canada, we were chatting away and I was driving 70 miles per hour in the third lane over. Yes, the fastest lane. All of a sudden, I started to lose power. I said anxiously I was losing power and got over to the next and then the right lane, I was driving at about 40 miles per hour when I got to the first exit. I finally arrived at a Citgo station and pulled off the road.
I immediately called my husband and he didn't answer. I was thinking he never answered his phone. I called 2 more times saying please answer the phone to myself. I was getting pretty upset thinking what I should do. I got out of the car and looked under it and smelled gas. Then I checked the oil and water. Luckily, both were good! My sister went into the gas station and said to the clerk if he knew anyone who could help us and then said pray for us as she made her way to the rest room.
