Paris is the city of dreams. If you plan to head to Paris for a study period, then perhaps a little reality check is in order. But my experience was a romantic one.
I paved my path to Paris through an exchange program. On arrival in Paris, I was constantly reminded of the official processes I had to complete — forms to be filled in, meetings to attend, the list seemed endless.
Then the real work began. Once classes were underway, I found myself volunteering to do oral presentations and assignments first, rather than last. This method proved to be very helpful.
Once I had finished class for the week I had an ever-increasing list of museums to visit, neighborhoods to explore, and cafes to sit in. Read books about Paris. Talk to locals and other foreigners living there. But the one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot. The people watching, the sounds of the city, the colors as the seasons change, they all add to the ecstasy that I experience in Paris as an exchange student.
After spending five months wandering through the charming neighborhoods, I fell in love with the atmosphere that came out from every open door, and with every spoken word. There is something comforting about walking to the market each Sunday to enjoy the beautiful display of fruits, vegetables and dairy products. There is warmth in saying bon jour to the passers-by.
On my last day in Paris, I confidently said, " Bonjour Monsieur," as I passed the little store down the street. I guess the best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own way. And I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.
4. What does the underlined word "ecstasy" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Courage. B. Happiness. C. Imagination. D. Reputation.
5. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. A traveling experience. B. An exchange program
C. Charming neighborhoods. D. An exchange student's life.
6. Beyond reading books, which experience would the author treasure most?
A. Hanging around in Paris. B. Buying vegetables in the market
C. Enjoying coffee in his spare time. D. Greeting people in French in the street.
7. According to the passage, what left the author the deepest impression?
A. The presentations he did in class. B. The friendly people he met in Paris.
C. The special culture he experienced in the city. D. The academic achievement he made in his study.
B 5. D 6. A 7. C
根据作者对在巴黎街上漫步的喜爱及第四段中的“The people watching, the sounds of the city, the colors as the seasons change, they all add to the ecstasy that I experience in Paris as an exchange student.(观看的人群,城市的声音,季节变换的颜色,都增加了我作为交换学生在巴黎体验的ecstasy)”可知,人们的注视,城市的声音,季节变化时的色彩,都增加了作者作为交换生体验巴黎的喜悦。 A. Courage.勇气;B. Happiness.幸福;C. Imagination.想象力;D. Reputation.
根据第一段中“But my experience was a romantic one.(但我的经历很浪漫)”和第二段中“I paved my path to Paris through an exchange program.(我通过一个交换项目来到了巴黎)”可知,作者作为一名交换生来到巴黎,他认为自己的巴黎之行非常浪漫。
根据第四段中“the one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot.(有一件事是读书或与人交谈所做不到的,那就是让你有徒步漫游巴黎的体验)”可知,读书以及和人交谈无法提供步行在巴黎闲逛带给你的体验。 故选A。
根据最后一段中“On my last day in Paris, I confidently said, " Bonjour Monsieur," as I passed the little store down the street. I guess the best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own way. And I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.(在巴黎的最后一天,当我经过沿街的小商店时,我自信地说:“Bonjour Monsieur”在。我猜在巴黎交流最棒的部分就是用你自己的方式爱上这个城市。这样的经历对我来说是独一无二的,是我自己对巴黎的感受)”由此判断出,给作者留下最深的印象是他在巴黎体验到了不同的风土人情,不同的文化。故选C。
C
Do you still remember Jurassic Park, an amazing movie where science brings dinosaurs back from extinction? Now some very smart scientists are working on a way to revive, not dinosaurs, but other extinct species like the woolly mammoth (长毛象)using the gene editing technology known as CRISPR.
As an evolutionary biologist, obviously, it would be amazing to bring back extinct creatures. But even if we can bring them back, we are not going to be able to control how they evolve in the future. No man is an island and neither is any other creature. We need an ecosystem in order to survive. So we can think a lot about the examples of reintroducing species into the environment, like the gray wolves into Yellowstone. Ecology is very complicated and it certainly wasn't important when we first introduce rabbits into Australia, which was a total disaster eventually.
All animals like birds and mammals have to learn from their parents. If we bring them back to life, who are going to be around to teach them? We have examples where in California we've had the reproduction of the condors (秃鹰).What scientists tried to do is to feed the babies using a mother condor puppet. When these poor creatures were released into the wild, they had an unnatural liking for humans. They didn't behave the way they should have, for condors.
According to Performing Animal Welfare Society a healthy elephant costs about $70,000 per year to care for and an elderly elephant costs a good deal more. Of course, we are not talking about one. We're talking about many creatures. I don't think these creatures will have a future.
8. Why does the author mention the film in the first paragraph?
A. To recall an amazing movie.
B. To promote some extinct species.
C. To introduce the topic to be discussed.
D. To get to know some intelligent scientists.
9. What does the author want to tell us by the examples in paragraph 2?
A. Humans need a balanced ecosystem to survive.
B. To bring back extinct creatures was an unwise idea.
C. Helping endangered species proves to be beneficial for humans.
D. There were all sorts of positive effects about reintroducing species.
10. Which animal didn't act in its own way?
A. Condor. B. Gray wolf. C. Rabbit. D. Elephant.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Is Jurassic Park an Amazing Movie?
B. What do Creatures Need to Survive?
C. Should We Bring Extinct Animals Back to Life?
D. How does an Evolutionary Biologist Protect Animals?
C 9. B 10. A 11. C
根据文中第一段末句“Now some very smart scientists are working on a way to revive, not dinosaurs, but other extinct species like the woolly mammoth (长毛象) using the gene editing technology known as CRISPR.”
根据文中第三段“When these poor creatures were released into the wild, they had an unnatural liking for humans. They didn't behave the way they should have, for condors.” 故选A。
D
New Deal Design, one of the world's leading tech design studios, has invented an artificial intelligence-equipped toy to fight the "distraction economy" by developing children's attention spans.
Called Spot, the toy is aimed at learning and discovery. It functions primarily as a handheld scanner that kids can point at an object around them, such as a flower or a bird, to hear it talk back.Using its AI software,Spot recognizes the object and voices a little monologue(独白)from it, processing information to suit children aged five to nine.
There's also a secondary function that comes into play at bedtime, when Spot uses its in-built projecto(r投影仪) to present a story made up around the day's discoveries.
Spot is a concept at this stage, one that grew out of the research New Deal Design conducted into children's development. The designers found that the right kind of toy could encourage focus,as opposed to instant satisfaction. They wanted to cultivate a kind of junior-level mindfulness that would set kids up with positive life skills.
In terms of appearance, Spot has a complicated look, with its 3D camera fixed in the head. The models are smooth, including a wooden handle,a button and a base. The choice of materials was inspired by traditional kids' building blocks.
When Spot recognizes an object, it blinks to signal it has locked the target. Its head also locks into place to avoid any shaking. As an example, New Deal Design describes a girl called Max, who among other things, encounters a robin while out with the toy. Via Spot, the bird says, "Hi Max, my name is Robin! Did you know ..."
At that night's Story Time, Spot starts "Once upon a time there was a little girl named Max who met a robin. One day, Max asked the robin ..." New Deal Design says that day summaries like this helps kids to relax and get better sleep. Seeing themselves at the centre of stories also helps to build self-confidence and self-awareness.
12. In which aspect do children benefit from the artificial intelligence-equipped toy?
A. encouraging focus B. giving an instant satisfaction
C. learning self-control D. developing positive life skills
13. According to the passage, which statement about Spot is right?
A. Spot tells stories programmed in advance.
B. Spot is beneficial to developing children’s attention spans.
C. Spot has already been used to fight the “distraction economy” now.
D. Spot’s appearance was inspired by traditional kids’ building blocks.
14. According to the text, who will the toy be useful for?
A. Tom, two years old, can’t recognize an object around him.
B. Max, eight years old, wants to make up a story about robin.
C. Tina, nine years old, can’t concentrate her attention on her class.
D. Mike, twelve years old, wants to learn something about artificial intelligence.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A scientific invention B. A learning program
C. An creative method D. A tech design studios
A 13. B 14. C 15. A

Going on holiday doesn’t have to be bad for the environment, and there are still plenty of ways in which you can have a much-deserved break without harming the environment.
Forget planes.
While most forms of transport produce carbon dioxide, one of the gases responsible for global warming, planes have a massive carbon footprint because of the huge number of miles they travel. ____16____ There’s so much to see and do in the U.K., yet most of us overlook the endless possibilities. There’s the unparalleled beauty of the Cornish coast and the Peak and Lake District. Enjoy the history of a stunning Welsh castle, try boating on the Norfolk Broads or riding the “Hogwarts Express” across Scotland. Or try taking the train over to Europe — within six hours of London are Amsterdam’s famous art galleries. Alternatively, take the car to Cannes in just over half a day or the ferry to Scandinavia for holidays you’d normally only dream of.
____17____
Hotels can be huge producers of greenhouse gases — think about the water that’s wasted, all the bathroom products thrown out half used and all the buffet food that goes uneaten. So choose an eco-friendly option instead. Camping and a home stay — where you live with a family in their own home — are two of the best options. But if you insist on staying in the hotel, some of the things to look out for are hotels made from ustainable materials, which are energy efficient or use their own solar energy and that recycle. ____18____
Pack with care.
The less you take, the lighter your carbon footprint, because the heavier your luggage is, the more fuel it takes to carry. So pack light and responsibly. ____19____ All of their bottles, from shampoo and conditioner to body wash and moisturizer, are now made from recycled plastic that can be repurposed again and again so no new plastic is produced. And their iconic soap bars now also come in plastic-free packaging.
Buy gifts responsibly.
Bringing back gifts for friends and loved ones is part of the fun of a holiday. ____20____ Avoid anything plastic, or if it is plastic, make sure it is 100% recyclable, and make sure your friends will love whatever you give them so it isn’t just thrown in the bin headed for landfill. Try to buy presents made by local craftsmen, which will benefit the community and help their economy. And don’t bring back anything made from shells, corals or animal products, because you don’t know if they’re from sustainable sources.
A. Consider living in an eco-friendly hotel.
B. Think about eco-friendly accommodation.
C. But make sure you choose items carefully.
D. Some also have planting programs to attract wildlife.
E Why not skip flying in favor of a holiday closer to home?
F. Rather than lie on a beach, why not help our precious planet when you’re away?
G. Take environmentally-friendly products with you, such as products from a household company.
E 17. B 18. D 19. G 20. C

You know how when big things in your life aren’t going well and the little things bother you more? That happened to me last year. Like many people during the pandemic, my husband, Paul, was laid off. I was still working, but my job was only part-time and would likely be ending soon too. I was worried about money, pandemic and our future.
That’s when our mailboxes really started getting to me. I’d never liked our mailboxes much. They stood at the end of our long driveway, far enough away from our house. Fortunately, I didn’t see them often. The mailboxes had already been in rough shape when we moved in and the paint was faded.
At some point, someone had driven into the pole. It was now bent slightly, making the mailboxes bend, pointing in different directions. Still, because the boxes could hold the mail and the mail carrier wasn’t complaining, there really was no need to replace them.
“I wish we could have better mailboxes,” I found myself thinking as I pulled out of the driveway one day on my way to work. It was just a passing thought. I probably would have forgotten all about it if not for the news we got the next morning.
The next day, my neighbor Ailsa told me a girl drove her car right into the mailboxes and completely knocked them down. Ailsa saw the accident and gave her our number and information. “That certainly wasn’t in our budget,” I thought. Though I wanted new mailboxes, getting them would be expensive. With our income decreasing since Paul’s layoff, this was an expense we didn’t need. I sighed.
However, the next day where our old, rusted mailboxes had once stood were two new shiny mailboxes-one black, one white. Each one had large, neat numbers on the sides, the white mailbox with black numbers and the black one with white numbers. They were beautiful. I sat there, feeling surprised.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
I opened one of the mailboxes and found a note.

Paragraph 2:
When we called, the girl’s mother answered.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I opened one of the mailboxes and found a note. “Dear owner,” it read, “I am so sorry that I hit your mailboxes. I bought new pretty ones and replaced them. Again, I am so sorry. Have a wonderful day!” The writer, Audree, had bought two new mailboxes for us and she had left her phone number and address in case we needed anything else. We did - we needed to thank her. We also wanted to make sure that she hadn’t been injured.
When we called, the girl’s mother answered. “Audree is 19 years old. She’s only been driving for a year. She was not hurt. This was a great learning experience for Audree,” her mother said. From her mother, I learned that Audree had a part-time job and with the money she earned from the job, she bought the mailboxes. The young girl makes me believe that though life rarely goes as planned, it will surprise us if we are brave enough. So don’t give up the effort to maintain our hope and optimism.
