How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work on a group project with other students? Do you like to work together with others or work alone?
The Program for International Student Assessment (国际学生评估项目), or PISA, did a survey of students' ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well in tests by themselves are also likely to be better at working with other students.
This finding is true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, whose test scores are high, also do well in working together to solve problems. But this is not true for every country. Chinese students, who have high scores as well, don't show a good ability of working together.
“One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers pay more attention to grades,” said Zhao Zhongxin, the former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association. “Students have a lot of exam pressure and they regard school as a place for competition.”
“However, cooperation is very important to students,” he added. “Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students learn to work with others.”
Another interesting finding is that girls are better at working together than boys. Girls show more positive attitudes toward relationship, which means they are more willing to listen to others’ opinions.

The word “mayday” is often heard in English movies. What does the word mean and when should people use it?
“Mayday” is an emergency code (紧急代码)word. It is used around the world in voice communication. You might see a war movie in which an airplane is hit. The pilot turns on his radio and calls “mayday, mayday, mayday” to tell that his plane is in danger of crashing (坠毁) to the ground.
“Mayday” has nothing to do with the month of May. It comes from a French word, which means “help me”.
Mockford created the “mayday” call signal (信号) in the 1920s. Mockford was a radio officer at Croydon Airport in London. He was asked to think up a word that could be used in an emergency. The word had to be easily understood by all pilots and airport workers. Much of the air traffic at that time was between Croydon Airport and Le Bourget Airport near Paris. And the word “mayday” he created sounded like a French word which meant “help me”. So the word “mayday” finally came into use.
Today, many groups use the word to mean a life-threatening (致命的) emergency. The call is always given three times to prevent mistaking it for some similar sounding words.
Many other French words are commonly used in English. Do you know any other word and its story?
