Hand gestures (手势) have been commonly used in our daily communication. They add to the message by filling in what words sometimes leave behind. But are you somewhat aware of the history that goes behind some of these popular hand gestures?
    ◆Handshake
Whether you’re greeting someone for the first time, or successfully negotiating (商定) an agreement, shaking hands is usually the go-to gesture. Who decided on this customary gesture, anyway? The history of the handshake dates back to ancient Greece, showing that neither person was carrying a weapon.
    ◆Thumbs up and thumbs down
Maybe you’re familiar with the popular story of this hand gesture dating back to Roman times. When a gladiator (角斗士) lost, the crowd would either stick their thumbs out to have him killed or just not make any sign at all. The thumbs up decided the gladiator’s fate (命运) . After WWII, thumbs up only came to mean that things were going smoothly. And thumbs down meant the opposite.
    ◆High five
According to some sources, the high five first became popular when baseball players performed at Dodger Stadium on October 2, 1977. Glenn Burke, one of the capable players, lifted his am high above his head and slapped palms with his teammate Dusty Baker to celebrate a milestone home run, marking what is widely regarded as the first recorded example of a high five.
    ◆The fist bump
The fist bump comes from boxers in the 1970s after people began imitating how they touched gloves before a competition. Later, instead of shaking hands, first bumps became popular among basketball players. The gesture soon spread to all basketball lovers, and, before long, to the President of the United States.
    21. What did “thumbs up” mean to a gladiator in Roman times?
    A. Being cheered. B. Being killed. C. Being appreciated. D. Being blamed.
    22. Which gesture is in celebration of a home run?
    A. B. C. D.
    23. Which aspect do all the four gestures mention?
    A. The history B. The future C. The power D. The importance
    B
Ancient hutongs of Beijing are always popular with visitors to the capital city. But time has not been kind to these old neighborhoods. In the middle of the 20th century, over 3,000 hutongs could be found in Beijing. But owing to a program of rapid modernization, the vast majority of these have been torn down. Today, unfortunately, just 500 remain. Although efforts have been taken to protect the surviving hutongs, many of the homes in these areas have fallen into disrepair and are in alarming condition.
But Beijing architecture firm People’s Architecture Office (PAO) has designed a solution for repairing hutong homes while keeping their traditional character. PAO is putting prefabricated modules (预制模块) in and around the houses, consisting of panels (嵌板) made of steel and glass. The panels fit together to create bright, comfortable space for residents (居民).The modules cost $500 per square meter—one-tenth of the Beijing average of $5,000 per square meter—and can be installed in a day.
“The units are small,” says James Shen, co-founder of PAO. “It means that we are able to bring them piece by piece into these very narrow hutongs. It also means that we can do building repairs without tearing any of the old buildings down.”
The group recently performed its first installation for a resident, in the Guangcai Hutong. Resident Fan Ke says the module has been transformative, particularly for the additional light it provides. “At first when I lived here, it was always dark,” says Fan. “Now after the repairs, I’m bathed in sunlight throughout the day. I no longer feel caged in.”
She hopes the first installation will be followed by thousands more. The architect says such a program would breathe new life into the hutongs, which, particularly those in central areas, are already seeing more interest from house purchasers. One couple recently spent over $800,000 on an 11-square-meter home in Wenchang Hutong.
“This kind of solution can help make these older areas livelier,” says Shen. “It can show younger people that you don’t have to move to a brand new modern apartment complex.”
24.What feeling does the author express in paragraph 1?
    A. Curiosity B. Confusion C. Excitement D. Concern
25.Which of the following is an advantage of the modules?
    A. They are very big and cheap. B. They use traditional materials.
    C. They cannot be torn down easily. D. They do not harm the ancient architecture.
26.What does Fan probably think of the modules?
    A. They are in great demand. B. They are satisfying.
    C. They block out the sunlight. D. They often need repair work.
27.What would be the best title for the text?
    A. The Last Hutongs of Beijing
B.A Growing Need for Hutong Homes
    C. Beijing’s Hutongs Get a Futuristic Makeover
    D. Young People Change Their Attitude to Beijing’s Hutongs
    C
You can remember the face, but can't put a name to it. Many of us have been caught in this embarrassing situation. But researchers say it is often easier to remember someone's name than what they look like.
Twenty-four volunteers were shown 40 pictures of strangers, paired with random(随机的) names. They were given time to memorize the faces and names before being tested on which they thought they had seen before.
The participants could remember up to 85 percent of the names but only 73 percent of the faces. When they were shown a different picture of the same person, the participants could recall only 64 percent of faces, according to the study, led by the University of York.
That may be because faces are only recognized visually(视觉地), while names can be both spoken and written down so appear in our visual and audio memory. When people were shown famous people, they also remembered their names more accurately than their photographs. Co-author Dr Rob Jenkins, from the university’s psychology department, said, ''Our study suggests that, while many people may be bad at remembering names, they are likely to be even worse at remembering faces. This will surprise many people as it is against our initial understanding. Our life experiences with names and faces have misled us about how our minds work. '' Remembering names gets harder with age, leading to many uncomfortable moments for middle-aged people when they run into people they know.
But to study whether names are harder to recall than faces, the researchers, whose findings are published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, used a ''fair test'' where the participants were presented with strangers' names and faces.
    28. What can we know according to the research in Paragraph 3?
    A. It is certain that names are harder to recall than faces.
    B. Remembering names is more easily than remembering faces.
    C. Most participants can remember the face not the name to it.
    D. The participants can recall 73% faces of the same person.
    29. Which of the following will the author agree with?
    A. Age will weaken the ability to remember names.
    B. Unlike faces, names are only recognized visually.
    C. Faces can appear in our visual and audio memory.
    D. Rob Jenkins has proved people can remember faces better.
    30. What does the underlined word ''initial'' in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Clear. B. first. C. Unusual. D. Creative.
    31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. People can't remember strangers’ names and faces.
    B. Recalling names is more difficult than remembering faces.
    C. The researcher uses the same method to study another problem.
    D. Whether names are harder to recall than faces is further proved.
    D
Our Earth’s oceans contain some of the most valuable resources. As the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions began to rise in popularity, the polluting of the Earth’s oceans did as well, leaving lifelong effects on all of its ecosystems.
Commercial whaling has left several whale species in danger of extinction. The blue whales of the Antarctic have less than one percent of their original numbers. Over 90 percent of plastic isn’t recycled, and a large part of that number finds its way into the ocean and surrounding beaches. The huge amount of plastic damages whales’ existence. Plastic is being eaten by sea life as well as entangling(缠住) them, putting them all at major risk. Without change, our Earth’s oceans will not be able to continue on for much longer.
The Delta Corporation was set up in 1972, later known as Ocean Conservancy. In the beginning years of Ocean Conservancy, its main initiative(倡议) was the Whale Protection Fund. This fund focused on saving the species and protesting against commercial whaling. They gained the support of many.
Ten years later, the International Whaling Commission finally banned commercial whaling. It then changed its focus to not only whales but to seals and sea turtles as well. Though they made great progress with these animals, they came to the conclusion that these animals cannot develop well without a healthy, sustainable environment. The workers of Ocean Conservancy then expanded their focus to the marine ecosystems and habitats.
Ocean Conservancy is one of several organizations working toward a common goal: saving the Earth’s oceans. They have started doing this by creating the Whale Protection movement that still exists. Though they have made significant progress throughout the years, there is still much to be done. Only when the common goal is shared by all groups, governments, and individuals, will real change be made. If successful, the electric bicycle meal program will be spread to all Crowne Plaza hotels in the UK, the hotel said in a statement.
    32. What can we know about the plastic from Paragraph 2?
    A. Recycling plastic is still a big challenge.
    B. Plastic has become part of the sea animals’ diet.
    C. Plastic reduces the population of whales to the least.
    D. Most of plastic ends up in oceans and sandy beaches.
    33. What made Ocean Conservancy pay attention to the ocean ecosystem?
    A. A ban on whaling. B. Its great achievement.
    C. The public support. D. Its improved concept.
    34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. Quite a few organizations have set their own goals.
    B. The days of Whale Protection movement are numbered.
    C. Ocean Conservancy’s work isn’t worth the praise.
    D. Saving the oceans is the shared responsibility of the whole world.
    35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Ocean Conservancy’s Target and Development
    B. A Solution to the Oceans’ Plastic Problems
    C. Ocean Conservancy’s Contribution to Oceans’ Protecting
    D. A Step Away from a Healthy Ecosystem

My little brother is a five-year-old boy named Tex. When it comes to being funny and lovable, he is the best. But when it comes to keeping secrets, he is the worst!
It just so happened that my parents’ wedding anniversary was near Valentine’s Day, and they planned to celebrate by going away for a couple of days. But at the last minute, my dad came home from work with bad news.
“I’m afraid our trip will have to wait. The shop assistant has the flu, so there will be no one to manage the grocery store if we go.”
“It’s OK,” my mom said, biting her lip. “We’ll have lots more anniversaries to celebrate.”
That was when I came up with the idea to surprise my parents with an extra-special cake. Luckily, the grandmother of my good friend Ollie, a very generous person who lives right next door, was an amazing baker with a kitchen full of most of the stuff you need to make a yummy valentine-anniversary cake.
I called Ollie if she and her grandmother could help me make a valentine-anniversary cake. I wanted to surprise Mom and Dad after dinner tonight. As usual, Ollie was happy to help me. Then, I asked my mother if I could go to Ollie’s and promised I would be back soon. Once I had my mom’s permission, I looked for perfect ingredients and a perfect heart-shaped pan just to make my cake more interesting and tasty. As I packed all the things I needed, I noticed Tex was glued to TV, which I thought was a perfect opportunity to leave secretly.
