Sprt is challenging and s is life.
Every language has its idims, which are grups f wrds with meanings different frm the meanings f the individual wrds. Idims make language mre clurful and expressive. Since sprt is an inseparable part f day-t-day life, there are lts f sprts idims that have fund their way int everyday language. Let’s take a lk at sme f them!
FtballFtball (r sccer, as it is called in the USA) isne f the mst ppular sprts in the wrld andmany cuntries have their wn ftball leagues. The English language is full f idims which arethught t have cme frm ftball. As yu knw, in a ftball match, players try tkick r head the ball int the ppsing team’sgal, which is the net between tw big galpsts fixed t the grund. Can yu imagine that every time yu have a chance t scre, the galpsts are mved? That wuld be nt nly difficult, but als upsetting. If smene “mves the galpsts” in everyday life, it means they unfairly change the rules r requirements fr smething. An insurance salesman wh is abut t reach his annual sales target, nly fr the cmpany t make the target higher, culd rightly cmplain abut thecmpany mving the galpsts.Thankfully, galpsts d nt really mve—but when a player scres an wn gal, he r she might wish they did. “Scring an wn gal” in ftball means accidentally kicking r heading the ball int ne’s wn net, and it is ne f the wrst things that can happen t a ftball player. BaseballBaseball is an ld and ppular sprt that has giventhe English language many different idims. Yumight have heard expressins like “in the ballpark”r “a ballpark estimate”. Fr this reasn, peple use the expressin“in the ballpark” r “a ballpark estimate” t talk abut rugh estimates.Anther cmmn baseball expressin is “thrwing smene a curveball”. Curveballs are balls that suddenly turn in the air, and these are f curse difficult fr the ther team t handle. We use this expressin t describe things that are unexpected and difficult t respnd t. “Three strikes and yu are ut” is anther idim that cmes frm baseball. As it suggests, in baseball this means that a batter (the persn with the baseball bat in his r her hands) is ut after making three unsuccessful attempts t hit the ball. This idim is ften used t talk abut situatins where peple fail after wasting three chances.
BxingEnglish als has a large number f idims cnnected with bxing, which has been a ppular sprt fr thusands f years. A bxer is nt allwed t use his r her fists t hit the ppnentbelw the waist. Hence cmes the idim “belw the belt”. In day-t-day life, if smene makes an unfair and cruel remark, we can describe it as “belw the belt”.“Thrwing in the twel” is anther cmmn idim that cmes frm bxing. When a bxer is lsing badly and is t tired r cnfused t give up n his r her wn, the cach will literally thrw a twel int the ring t end the fight. In everyday life, this idim simply means admitting defeat and giving up.Sprt is challenging and s is life. Hwever, when yu are thrwn a curveball, d nt thrw in the twel—wrk hard, be careful nt t scre an wn gal, and yu are sure t make it!
