72 hours in Beijing
Traveling to China is no longer a luxury for many foreign passport holders. The Chinese government has permitted a 72-hour visa free policy that offers access to visitors from 53 countries including the US, France and Austria. Let’s start with the capital of China, Beijing. Here’s a pick of the best in Beijing.
Mutianyu Great Wall
Your trip to Beijing isn’t really complete without seeing one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World”—the Great Wall of China. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is by far the most well-preserved of all. Taking a one-hour bus ride, Mutianyu would be your ideal location for a half-day of hiking away from the large crowds in the city. Also, the authorities have allowed tourists to paint graffiti on a specific section of the Great Wall since 2014. The Great Wall was designated (把……定名为) a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.
Summer Palace
Located in northwestern Beijing, the Summer Palace is by far the city’s most well-preserved royal park. With its huge lake and hilltop views, the palace offers you a pastoral escape into the landscape of traditional Chinese paintings. The Summer Palace was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998.
798 Art Zone
This would be on the top of my list! Named after the 798 factory that was built in the 1950s, the art zone is home to various galleries, design studios, art exhibition spaces, fashionable shops and bars. You could easily spend half your day wandering around the complex, feeling the contrast of the present and the past.
Sichuan Provincial Restaurant
While in Beijing, apart from trying the city’s best-known Peking duck, the Sichuan provincial restaurant is one of places where you can enjoy regional delicious food. It offers one of China’s eight great cuisines, Sichuan Cuisine, which ranges from Mapo tofu to spicy chicken.
21. When was the Summer Palace added to the UNESCO World Heritage List?
A. In 1950. B. In 1987. C. In 1998. D. In 2014.
22. Which place is the author’s first choice when visiting Beijing?
A. Mutianyu Great Wall. B. 798 Art Zone.
C. Summer Palace. D. Sichuan Provincial Restaurant.
23. Who is the passage intended for?
A. The tourists who prefer to travel for free.
B. The foreigners to stay in Beijing for 4 days.
C. The visitors coming from every corner of China.
D. The foreigners coming to Beijing for the first time.

When Kevin Durant gave his tearful MVP speech in 2014, the NBA star made sure to thank one person who had been there with him from the very beginning: his mother. His heartfelt words about the sacrifices she made for Durant and his brother led to a lifetime movie about her journey as a single parent, The Real MVP: The Wanda Durant Story.
Today, the NBA superstar’s mom travels the country as a motivational speaker and philanthropist(慈善家). On Monday, she spoke at Thomson Reuters’ in New York about her personal struggles to achieve financial stability and shared the financial advice she gave her son when he entered the league with CNBC.
“I wanted him to realize he has worked hard,” she says, “And it is OK for him to enjoy himself because of his hard work. But it is also imperative that he prepares for his future.” While she advised him to enjoy the rewards of his labor, she also wanted to make sure that her son knew the importance of financial planning.
She told the audience that when she found herself a single parent to two children at 21, she couldn’t follow the financial principles. Rather than planning for the future, she focused only on how her money could make ends meet for that moment. Recently, Durant has teamed up with Laurene Powell Jobs for a new philanthropic program called College Track, which is aimed at helping disadvantaged kids attend college. As part of the program, Durant has committed to donating $10 million to his hometown’s public school system.
Durant’s mom says that in addition to his financial decisions, she is proud of his philanthropic work and his desire to help the community. “I thought giving back was always very important, and so we talked about that and he had seen that from us as a family and it’s one of the things that I taught him,” she says.
24. What is The Real MVP: The Wanda Durant Story mainly about?
A. Durant’s career path. B. Durant’s hard childhood.
C. Durant’s mother’s devotion to the family. D. Durant’s struggling to be independent.
25. What does the underlined word “imperative” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Enjoyable. B. Important. C. Unusual. D. Harmful.
26. What are the financial principles of Durant’s mom?
A. Enjoying now and planning for the future.
B. Sharing rewards and creating a charity program.
C. Spending less money and saving for the emergencies.
D. Donating money to the charity and helping more schools.
27. What made Durant pay attention to the charity program?
A. His kind heart. B. His poor hometown.
C. His mother’s teaching. D. His difficult life experiences.

Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon.
But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories(卡路里)per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1. 4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn
proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
28. Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?
A. They must run long distances. B. They are qualified for the marathon.
C. They have to follow special rules. D. They are good at swinging their legs.
29. What advantage does race walking have over running?
A. It’s more popular at the Olympics. B. It’s less challenging physically.
C. It’s more effective in body building. D. It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.
30. What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking?
A. Getting experts’ opinions. B. Having a medical checkup.
C. Hiring an experienced coach. D. Doing regular exercises.
31. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to race walking?
A. Skeptical. B. Objective. C. Tolerant. D. Conservative.
D
The endangered pandas in Qinling Mountains might face a new threat(威胁): the loss of their food, bamboo, which makes up 99% of their meals. Adult pandas spend most part of the day eating bamboo and have to take in at least 40 pounds a day to stay healthy. However, a new study published in Nature and Climate Change warned that they may soon find their food gone because most of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains might disappear by the end of the century as a result of rising temperature worldwide.
A team made up of researchers from Michigan State University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has studied the effects of climate change on the bamboo in Qinling Mountains. They have found that bamboo is very sensitive to climate changes. “80% to 100% of the bamboo would be gone if the average temperature increases 3.5 degrees worldwide by the end of the century.” said Liu Jianguo, one of the report’s authors.
He added, “This is how much the temperature would rise by 2100 even if all countries will keep their promises in the Paris Agreement. But you know what is happening around the world. ”
In recent years, China has been trying its best to protect the endangered pandas by setting up more and bigger natural reserves.
“But it is far from being enough and the endangered pandas need cooperation from the rest of the world, because their future is not just in the hands of the Chinese,” said Shirley Martin from World Wildlife Fund but not a member of the team.
The Qinling Mountains, in the southwest of China, are home to about 260 pandas. That is about 13% of the China’s wild panda population. In addition, about 375 are living in research centers and zoos in China.
32. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Lots of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains will probably disappear.
B. Qinling Mountains can provide enough bamboo for the pandas.
C. Pandas in Qinling Mountains are just threatened by the loss of food.
D. Pandas have already eaten 99% of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains.
33. What does Liu Jianguo mean?
A. China needs more help from World Wildlife Fund.
B. Bamboo is sensitive to the changes of temperature.
C. China is making great efforts to protect the pandas.
D. It is difficult to control the temperature rise within 3. 5℃.
34. How many wild pandas are there in China?
A. About 260. B. About 635. C. About 2,000. D. About 2,635.
35. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. The Disappearance of Bamboo B. A New Threat Faced by the Pandas
C. Efforts Made to Save Pandas D. Necessity to Change Pandas’ Food

参考范文:
Dear fellow students,
I am Li Hua, president of the Student Union. Recently, we have noticed that food waste in our school is very serious. Many students leave a certain amount of food in their plates. What’s worse, some even leave the food untouched. It is high time that we took measures.
In order to put an end to this phenomenon, we should do as follows. We should behave ourselves only buying what we need, which is of great importance. Besides, each class is expected to arrange a person to supervise dining situation. Once spotted wasting, he / she will be given an immediate warning.
As we know, thrift is a traditional virtue of our country, so we should carry it forward. We hope that all the students can take an active part in the “Clean Your Plate” campaign. Let’s try our best together.

W: Obviously, not taller. I hope that I will be performing for more people, especially here in the US. I hope that in five years, I will be able to reach more people here.

W: Good morning, sir. How can I help you?
M: Good morning. I left my suitcase behind yesterday. Has anyone handed it in?
W: Where were you sitting, sir?
M: At one of the tables near the fountain.
W: Could you describe it, sir?
M: Yes. It’s a black leather one with a gold lock. It has my name on the side.
W: I’m sorry, sir. All we have is a brown one, but if you give me your details, we’ll contact you if we find it.
M: Thanks. The suitcase is important to me. My name is Stephen, 36 Park Street.
W: And what’s your phone number?
M: Three four six nine double eight zero two.
W: OK, I’ve got it.

M: Hello, everyone. My name is John. I’m the teaching assistant for this lab session. Let me explain a little about it. As you may know already, it’s a required meeting once a week. I expect you to do all the experiments and keep the results in your lab notebook. I’ll collect the notebooks every two weeks. You’ll be graded on lab notebooks and quizzes. But the most important information I want to give you now is about safety. First of all, you must wear shoes that cover your feet in the lab. Tennis shoes are OK. Also, don’t wear loose clothes, long scarves, big necklaces, or loose belts — they get caught in something or fall into liquid. Another thing to do for safety is cleaning up. Be sure to put the waste in the correct containers. We can’t mix liquid with paper. This is extremely important. I don’t want any fires in this room. You are responsible for washing out your own lab equipment and putting it away. If you don’t do this, I will take away points from your grade. Nobody’s going to clean up after you. OK, any questions?
