When Merle was a child, she was often sick. To getstronger, she took up swimming. Soon, she was taking part inopen-water swimming competition. Merle moved to Florida 12years ago, but she continued to swim in the ocean. One dayduring training,she almost swallowed(吞)some floatingplastic waste. This made her think of the sea animals. Shedecided to do something to let people see this serious problem.
Merle had an idea ofswimming like an oceananimal. She began to swimwith rubbery fin(脚蹼) onher feet. Instead of using herarms, she swam forward bykicking her legs together. In2019, Merle set a world record for the first time for swimmingwith a rubbery fin. She swam 10 kilometers. In 2021, she brokethe record by swimming 30 kilometers. Finally, on May 7, 2022, Merle managed to break therecord again. She swam 42.2 kilometers. It took her nearly 12hours! Along the way, she picked up allthe trash and put it inkayak(皮划艇).She got three full bags of the trash in the end.
