Where to See Amazing Colours Around the World
      Lake District
As you wander along Windermere to the centre of Ambleside, autumn colours are rich. Looking across the water, it seems that the tree line is alight(闪亮的) with red and orange leaves. As you round the bend on to the road into town, you are faced with a hillside that celebrates autumn at its best.
Canada Dorset Lookout Tower, near Toronto
Before you reach Dwight, climb the Dorset Lookout Tower, 142 metres above the Lake of Bays. From up here, the canopy(树冠) is an autumnal quilt reaching to the horizon, refreshing the eyes and invigorating the spirit.
    Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee/North Carolina
Autumn in this national park is amazing. Just outside quaint Townsend, Tennessee, it is a bikeable and drivable 11-mile loop(环形车道), but be sure to explore the cabins and fields on foot. Late October and early November is my favourite time to visit it; the colours are great and the weather is cool enough to allow nice walks and hikes.
    Kamikochi National Park, Honshu
In central Honshu, three hours’ drive northeast of Nagoya, is one of the most charming places in the Japanese Alps. The mountain slopes are covered with forests of larch(落叶松) and beech that blaze scarlet and orange in autumn. Wisps of smoke hang in the still air above Yakedake Volcano, and the glass surface of Taisho Pond perfectly reflects the trees and snow-dusted mountains.
    21. What season scenery does the text describe?
    A. Spring. B. Summer.
    C. Autumn. D. Winter.
根据第一部分中“... autumn colours are rich.”,第二部分中“an autumnal quilt reaching to the horizon”,第三部分中“Autumn in this national park is amazing.”以及最后一部分中“... and beech that blaze scarlet and orange in autumn.”
    22. Where would you go if you like to ride a bike?
    A. Lake District.
    B. Canada Dorset Lookout Tower.
    C. Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee/North Carolina.

    答案:C
    23. What is different from others about Kamikochi National Park?
    A. People can enjoy colourful leaves from up.
    B. You can appreciate the snow scene.
    C. The scenery here is the most charming.
    D. No smoke can be seen above the volcano.
根据文章最后一句中的“... and the glass surface of Taisho Pond perfectly reflects the trees and snow-dusted mountains.”
    B
Norma Burns has been running her organic farm for the last 18 years, but she’s now looking to turn over a new leaf, so she’s giving the farm away to whoever wins her essay contest(作文竞赛).
The Bluebird Hill Farm has been everything to Norma during the last 18 years, but running it takes a lot of work, and after Norma’s husband died in 2005, she’s been having a tough time taking care of everything alone. She has decided to go back to the city, but she hopes to leave her beloved farm in good hands.
Although it’s been valued at around $450,000, she doesn’t want to sell her farm. She wants to give it away to a couple who can best explain why they would be her best choice in a 200-word essay. “To me, there’s no better thing in life than raising organic food,” Norma said. “I’m looking for a couple who have experience and training in organic farming and are willing and able to put in the long days and hard work that farming requires. The only thing they don’t have is an actual farm.”
The “A Gift of Good Land” essay contest gives farmers the chance to live the life they’ve always dreamed of. Apart from the $300 entry fee, there are a few important conditions. First of all, applicants must have the experience and training required to operate an organic farm. Secondly, the contest mentions “couples” for the reason that the farm can’t be operated successfully by a single person. Ever since Norma made public the news of her essay contest, her phone hasn’t stopped ringing. “It just kind of exploded,” she said.
If you’ve always wanted to be an organic farmer but couldn’t afford a farm, this is your chance. Head over to the Bluebird Hill Farm website, and sign up for the contest. Norma would pick the winning couple at last.
    24. What does the underlined part “turn over a new leaf” in paragraph 1 mean?
    A. Live a new life. B. Depend on others.
    C. Help those in need. D. Make things better.
由第一段中“Norma Burns has been running her organic farm for the last 18 years ...”及第二段中“She has decided to go back to the city ...”
    答案:A
    25. Why does Norma want to give her farm away?
    A. She is in need of more organic food.
    B. The life on the farm is boring and lonely.
    C. She wants to help new farmers get started.
    D. It requires more work than she can handle.
由第二段中“... but running it takes a lot of work, and after Norma’s husband died in 2005,she’s been having a tough time taking care of everything alone.”
    26. What can we learn about the essay contest?
    A. It charges applicants no fee.
    B. Many people show interest in it.
    C. The winner will be announced on the website.
    D. Experienced farmers are not allowed to take part in it.
由倒数第二段中“Ever since Norma made public the news of her essay contest, her phone hasn’t stopped ringing.”
    27. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. An Essay to Write for a Contest
    B. A Gift to Present for Farming
    C. A Farm to Win by Writing an Essay
    D. A Farm to Give Away for Nothing
    C
The fact that trees are vital to our life is not a secret. Trees provide us with food, wood and most importantly, oxygen. Now there is one more thing we can add to this list—blocking out harmful bacteria from water.
The discovery was made by a team consisting of scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and high school students who were seeking a natural water filter(过滤器)—one that would help communities in developing countries that do not have access to modern water filter systems.
The researchers, led by Professor Rohit Karnik, decided to turn to trees for help because they could allow liquid to flow through, while blocking out air bubbles.
They began by cutting 1.5-inch-wide sections of tree bark from the branches of a white pine tree. The researchers then tested the wood’s filtering ability by pouring water containing red dye particles of different sizes through. To their surprise, they found that it was effective in trapping all the particles. Encouraged, the team conducted another experiment, this time with water that contained bacteria. Sure enough, the sapwood held back 99% of the bacteria, allowing only 1% to flow through.
Mr Karnik said that the bark was able to filter water containing much smaller particles. This means that it can be used to get rid of a majority of bacteria, since most are at least 10 times as wide. However, what troubles them is that tree bark isn’t blocking out viruses, which tend to be much smaller.
Also, while the pine sapwood is effective, we must remember one thing—it only works when it is damp. This means that before this natural filter can be put into practical use, the researchers will have to figure out how to keep the wood damp, or find a way to keep the bark’s great filtering ability even when it’s dry!
But the team is not done yet. They plan on testing other types of sapwood, including those from flowering trees which have smaller pores(气孔). They think that these may be more effective in trapping smaller particles and even viruses.
    28. What problem troubles the researchers when they use tree bark as water filters?
    A. Viruses cannot be blocked out.
    B. Not all bacteria will be held back.
    C. Viruses don’t make air bubbles.
    D. Tree bark needs to be kept in water.
由第五段末的“However, what troubles them is that tree bark isn’t blocking out viruses, which tend to be much smaller.” 故选A项。
    答案:A

    A. is damp
    B. is dry
    C. has been cut down

由倒数第二段中的“... it only works when it is damp.”和“the researchers will have to figure out how to keep the wood damp”可知,树皮只有在潮湿的时候才有过滤作用。故选A项。
    答案:A
    30. The team is planning to conduct other experiments to .
    A. find all wood bark with such ability
    B. find which trees have the smallest pores
    C. improve trees’ filtering ability
    D. test other wood bark’s filtering ability
    31. In which column of a newspaper can we read this text?
    A. Nature. B. Science.
    C. Lifestyle. D. Society.

Have you ever heard of agritourism where you can experience the farm life?If not, Dr Cindy Ayers-Elliott will tell you the real story of Foot Print Farms.
The original concept of building Foot Print Farms was simple. When Elliott returned to her hometown after graduation, she didn’t have to look any further than her state’s alarming health statistics to find a mission. Everywhere she went, there were reports of high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease. “The problem was already identified,” explains Elliott. “Too many Mississippians were seriously unhealthy and it didn’t take research to see that. And many of the state’s greatest health challenges could directly result from poor diet.”
These days, Foot Print Farms, which started with a few raised beds of herbs and vegetables, is making fresh, naturally grown food. “When speaking of the key to my success, the cooperative model works because we share the work and rewards,” notes Ayers-Elliott. “A perfect example is the Wingfield High School football team. To earn the money for equipment and other items, players committed to working five hours a week on the farm, and by the end of the summer they’d produced 1,000 melons and the profits from their sales helped to buy weights, T-shirts, sweatsuits and pregame meals. But the lessons they learned about the rewards of hard work and working together to accomplish something were even more valuable products of their efforts.”
“It’s a model that can easily be learned in other places and I’m looking forward to seeing some of our current partners do just that—to take what they have learned here and spin it off in other communities,” Ayers-Elliott remarks. She is now looking forward to developing an agritourism area to the farm, where visitors can experience the farm life, learn new skills and take with them seeds of inspiration they can sow in their own communities when they return home.
    32. What made Ayers-Elliott set up Foot Print Farms?
    A. The problems faced by local farmers.
    B. Her further research into heart disease.
    C. The failure of her career after graduation.
    D. The health state of people in her hometown.
    33. Why does the author take the football team as an example?
    A. To advocate the concept of independence.
    B. To stress the importance of teamwork.
    C. To support the idea of cooperative model.
    D. To explore the key to success.
    34. What is Ayers-Elliott’s attitude towards the future of Foot Print Farms?
    A. Optimistic. B. Skeptical.
    C. Cautious. D. Ambiguous.
根据最后一段中的“I’m looking forward to ... and spin it off in other communities”和“She is now looking forward to ... they can sow in their own communities when they return home”可知,艾尔斯对Food Print Farms的发展充满期待。 故选A项。
    答案:A
    35. What is the main idea of the text?
    A. Naturally grown food benefits people’s health.
    B. Foot Print Farms is making a difference in Mississippi.
    C. Ayers-Elliott encourages people to experience the farm life.
    D. Agritourism is becoming increasingly popular in America.

      36. It’s hard work. If you’ve never farmed a day in your life, be ready to answer the question “Why do you want to farm?” with confidence.
Find farms that you like. There might be some in your area; there might not. Ask around. Search the Web, and find out about county fairs and visit them. 37. Talk to them. Ask them what they do, how their farms have changed over time, what direction they think the field is going in, and if you could stop by and visit their farm some time. Farmers are generally friendly and welcome people, though some are more guarded than others.
Dress the part. 38. But if you walk into a law firm interview dressed in a pair of jeans, it’s the same as walking onto a farm wearing a long dress. If you’re just starting out in farming, you’re probably going to be doing a lot of physical labour. Wear a clean T-shirt, jeans, and work boots. Buy a good pair of work gloves because your hands will be sore and full of blisters in a very short time. 39. Because the long hair will get caught in something.
Farmers of today are businessmen because they have to be able to survive. 40. If you want to make it past the farm labour stage you must know all aspects of farming.

A painter living by painting portraits(肖像) was leading a poor life.
One day, a woman came by. She liked the paintings very much and asked the painter to draw a portrait for her. They agreed on 2,000 dollars.
Before painting the portrait, the woman asked the painter to draw more jewels. The painter curiously asked why, but the woman refused to explain. After a week, the portrait was done and the woman came to take the painting. At this moment, she hit on an evil idea of bullying the unknown young artist. She thought, “The portrait is me. If I don’t buy the painting, nobody will buy it. Why should I pay so much money?” So the woman said to the young painter, “I will only pay 200 dollars for it.”
The young man was surprised, for he had never come across such an experience. He strongly argued with her, expecting this woman to keep to the agreement.
“I can only pay 200 dollars to buy the painting,” the woman thought she could win for sure.
The young painter knew the woman broke her promise on purpose, so he felt annoyed. He said in a firm voice, “No, I would prefer to keep this painting rather than be humiliated(羞辱) by you. Today you break your word and some day you must pay 20 times for it.”
“What a joke! 20 times will be 40,000! I won’t be stupid to pay 40,000 dollars to buy the painting!”
“Well, we’d better wait and see,” the young artist shouted to the woman who left angrily. After the stimulation(刺激) of such an incident, the painter moved out of this sad place, studied under acknowledged teachers and worked hard day and night. More than a dozen years later, he finally started a new way and became popular in the circle of art. However, the woman had forgotten the artist’s painting and words the next day.

    注意:
    (1)续写词数应为150左右;

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
    答案:
    Paragraph 1:
One day, that famous painter decided to hold an art exhibition at the very place. Present in the exhibition hall were crowds of celebrities and artists. It was a feast in the circle of art. In the centre was a painting entitled “Thief”, priced at 40,000 dollars. Strangely enough, the woman in the painting looked just the same as the vain woman in reality. Word spread and finally it reached the woman’s ears. She recalled the incident and the painter. It dawned on her that the painter humiliated her in this way.
    Paragraph 2:
The woman went there hurriedly, apologised millions of times and promised that she would buy her portrait as soon as possible. The successful painter turned his back to her, speechlessly. With many visitors around, so embarrassed was she that she stood there clumsily, feeling the blood rush to her face. Then the painter turned around and handed her the portrait. Before the woman could pay her money, the painter explained that it was a gift for her, hoping she would be an honest woman without vanity. Anyway, for the painter, it was this incident that made him what he was today.
