The Calgary Public Library has some great resources to beat boredom and keep your children busy over the summer, whether at home or on the road.
During the school year children are busy with homework and required reading, so summer is a great time for them to relax and read what they choose. Not only is reading a pleasurable way to pass the time, it will also help children keep their skills up over the summer, so they are prepared to go back to school in the fall.
If you are taking a tip this summer, why not let the kids help out with the planning? Borrow a children’s atlas to choose your way together and check out some books about your destination before departure. The All about Provinces and Territories series is fill of interesting facts about each Canadian Province.
Going camping? How about taking along some scary, or not so scary, stories to tell around the campfire? Alvin Schwarz’s collections of Scary Tales to Tell in the Dark are sure to make your spine tingle and your teeth chatter. For something a little less horrible, try Velcome: a Very Scary Book, by Kevin O’Malley, which includes such horrors as a plate of mixed vegetables!
For long car rides, check out Car Games: 100 Games to Avoid “Are we there Yet?” It’s full of fun games and activities like cow football and Dude, where’s my orange car? —games that are sure to keep youngsters occupied on long journeys.
Remember to lead by example and pack a book in your own beach bag. If children see you reading, they will understand that books are an important and valuable part of summer and they will begin to copy your habits!
The staff at the Calgary Public Library are always happy to help find that perfect summer read, so stop by your nearest branch, call us at 260-2600, or visit our website at calgarypubliclibrary.com today.

A 3-year-old boy called Casey who was lost in the woods for two days is now safe at home with his family. But he told his rescuers that he was not alone in the rainy, freezing cold woods. He said he was with a friend — a bear.
The child went missing on January 22 while playing with friends at his grandfather’s house in the southern state of North Carolina. When the other children returned to the house and Casey did not, the family searched the area for almost an hour before calling the police.
Police formed a search and rescue team to look for the young boy in the nearby woods. But two days went by and still no Casey.
Then on January 24, someone called the police saying they heard a child crying in the woods. Police followed up on the information and found Casey at about 9:30 that night. They pulled him out of some briar He was in good health.
Casey told the rescuers that he had hung out with a black bear for two days, a bear he called his “friend”.
Officer Hughes spoke with reporters from several agencies. He said Casey did not say how he was able to survive the woods for three days in the cold, rainy weather. However, he said, “Casey did say he had a friend in the woods that was a bear. And at no point do I think he was taken away illegally.”
Doctors at Carolina East Medical Center treated Casey for minor injuries. He was then released to his family on January 25.
His mother Brittany Hathaway talked with reporters from a local news agency and thanked everyone who joined in the search and rescue efforts.
“We just want to tell everybody that we’re very grateful that you took the time out to come search for Casey and prayed for him, and he’s good,” said his mother. “He is good, he is up and talking. He’s already asked to watch Netflix.”

We are the products of evolution, and not just evolution that occurred billions of years ago. As scientists look deeper into our genes (基因), they are finding examples of human evolution in just the past few thousand years. People in Ethiopian highlands have adapted to living at high altitudes. Cattle -raising people in East Africa and northern Europe have gained a mutation (突变) that helps them digest milk as adults.
On Thursday in an article published in Cell, a team of researchers reported a new kind of adaptation - not to air or to food, but to the ocean. A group of sea-dwelling people in Southeast Asia have evolved into better divers. The Bajau, as these people are known, number in the hundreds of thousands in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. They have traditionally lived on houseboats; in recent times, they’ve also built houses on stilts (支柱) in coastal waters. “They are simply a stranger to the land,” said Redney C. Jubilado, a University of Hawaii researcher who studies the Bajau.
Dr. Jubilado first met the Bajau while growing up on Samal Island in the Philippines. They made a living as divers, spearfishing or harvesting shellfish. “We were so amazed that they could stay underwater much longer than us local islanders,” Dr. Jubilado said. “I could see them actually walking under the sea.”
In2015, Melissa Ilardo, then a graduate student in genetics at the University of Copenhagen, heard about the Bajau. She wondered if centuries of diving could have led to the evolution of physical characteristics that made the task easier for them. “it seemed like the perfect chance for natural selection to act on a population,” said Dr. Ilardo. She also said there were likely a number of other genes that help the Bajau dive.
8.What does the author want to tell us by the examples in paragraph 1?
A.Environmental adaptation of cattle raisers. B.New knowledge of human evolution.
C.Recent findings of human origin. D.Significance of food selection.
9.Where do the Bajau build their houses?
A.In valleys. B.Near rivers. C.On the beach. D.Off the coast.
10.Why was the young Jubilado astonished at the Bajau?
A.They could walk on stilts all day. B.They had a superb way of fishing.
C.They could stay long underwater. D.They lived on both land and water.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Bodies Remodeled for a Life at Sea B.Highlanders’ Survival Skills
C.Basic Methods of Genetic Research D.The World’s Best Divers

A five-year-old dog named Kelsey has been praised as a hero for helping to save the life of her owner who slipped in the snow and broke his neck.
The man, Bob, was alone when he left his Michigan farmhouse on New Year’s Eve to collect firewood. Expecting a journey of only several meters, Bob was wearing just long johns (秋裤), a shirt and slippers when he went outside, although the temperature was around -4°C.

Finally, hearing the barking, Bob’s neighbor discovered him at 6:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day and called the emergency services at once. When Bob arrived in hospital, his body temperature was below 21°C. However, doctors were surprised to find that he didn’t have any frostbite (冻疮). They believed it was because of Kelsey’s determination to keep him warm. Dr. Chaim Colen, the doctor who treated Bob, said, “Animals can help and his dog really saved him … he was very fortunate.”

We know that too much of the wrong kind of food can be bad for our health, but for some people having a food allergy, eating certain things can actually be harmful. Now it is seemingly affecting more and more of us.
An allergy is caused by the immune system fighting substances in the environment, known as allergens, that it should see as harmless. 16 It means people have to spend their lives following strict dietary restrictions and worrying about the ingredients of everything they consume. We often hear about people having allergies to dairy products and to peanuts. Last year a teenager died after suffering a fatal allergic reaction from eating a baguette containing sesame seeds. 17
Research has found that this problem is particularly affecting children. 18 Dr Alexandra Santos from King’s College London says food allergy now affects about 7 percent of children in the UK, and 9 percent of those in Australia.
19 Dr Santos says, the increase in allergies is not simply the effect of society becoming more aware of them and better at diagnosing them. 20 She adds that possible factors are pollution, dietary changes and less exposure to bacteria, which change how our immune systems respond.
A.So what might be the cause?
B.It seems to be more environmental.
C.Similarly, food allergic reaction is deadly.
D.This led to a call for better food-labeling laws.
E.Besides, more adults are suffering from food allergies.
F.However, food allergies can cause life-threatening reactions.
G.More and more of them are having allergic reactions to certain foodstuffs.

Different countries have wildly different forms of greeting.
In the USA, when you pass by someone you know, a nod is acceptable, and you usually shake hands with someone you first meet. But in Latin countries, a firm handshake 41 (consider) rude. In my home country, Mauritius, when people meet, they usually kiss each other 42 the cheeks. This is also common in France, 43 the act is called faire la bise. However, this is not 44 universal rule.
During my first week in the USA, I kissed every single girl I met. My friends had to tell me that that was inappropriate, 45 (leave) me in great embarrassment. What is common here, however, is for friends 46 (hug) each other – something I was not used to. Hugs always make me 47 (frighten) because I don’t really like that. This may seem strange since even kissing 48 (stranger) is normal in my country. Now that I think about it, I hate cheek-kissing as well.
Wouldn’t it be 49 (enjoy) to have a greeting code that is 50 (wide) acceptable? I’m not saying we should start doing that, but we can surely do something to avoid misunderstanding.

A. outgoing外向的;B. overweight超重的;    C. intelligent聪明的;D. friendly友好的。
A. whisper小声说;B. whistle吹口哨;C. giggle咯咯笑;D. laugh大笑。
A. drive驱车旅行;B. lift上升;C. ride车程;D. travel旅行。 根据空前的“Boarding the school bus that first day”可知,我第一天乘校车,因此此处指“乘校车的一路上”,故C项正确。
A. throwing扔掉;B. losing失去;C. leaving离开;D. dropping掉落。根据空前的“thus fell face first on the bus”可知,我被绊倒了,手里拿的东西都掉在了地上,故D项正确。
A. Though尽管;B. While当……时;C. Since自从;D. Because因为。根据空后的“I was embarrassingly gathering  my supplies, I could hear the laughter”可知,当我收拾我掉在地上的东西时,我听见别人的哄笑,故B项正确。
A. opinions观点;B. statements陈述;C. comments评论;D. discussions讨论。根据空后的““That felt like an earthquake!””
A. determined下决心;B. attempted试图;C. pretended假装;D. managed设法做成。根据空后的“Looking out of the window”可知,我从车窗往外看,这说明我还是找到一个座位坐下了,manage to do设法做成某事,故D项正确。
A. kept away防范;B. took back收回;C. put away放好;D. held back抑制、阻止。根据空后的“the tears welling up in my eyes.”
A. garden花园;B. market市场;C. church教堂;D. library图书馆。根据空后的“where I would chat silently  with myself.”
A. escaping逃离;B. missing错过;C. delaying推迟;D. stopping停止。
A. changes改变;B. friends朋友;C. efforts努力;D. decisions决定。根据上文中的“I started losing weight”可知,体重减轻给我带来了信心,再结合空后的“One of my newly-found friends”可知,我开始交朋友了,故B项正确。
A. struggled努力;B. competed竞争;C. dealt处理;D. lived住。
A. run跑步;B. play玩;C. chat聊天;D. walk走路。根据上文中的“I began 11 the afternoon school bus on purpose, walking home instead.”可知,我开始故意错过下午的校车,步行回家,再结合下文中的“different from the lonely walks I had taken.”
A. along沿着;B. across穿过;C. by在……旁边;D. in在……里面。根据空前的“with talking and laughing”可知,我俩结伴步行回家一路上有说有笑,along the way沿途,一路上,故A项正确。
根据空前的“I just had to be me,”可知,我只需要做我自己,对自己满意,故B项正确。
A. relive再体验;B. remind提醒;C. relate涉及;D. rethink重新考虑。根据空后的“that time of loneliness, sadness and embarrassment”可知,我不想再次经历那段孤独、悲伤和困窘的时光,故A项正确。
A. excited兴奋的;B. upset心烦的;C. proud自豪的;D. regretful后悔的。根据空后的“I made it through”可知,我为自己挺了过来而自豪,故C项正确。

【点睛】本篇第15空A项run的干扰性较大,有些同学会认为我和新交的那个朋友相约一起跑步减肥而误选此项,但根据上文中的“I began 11 the afternoon school bus on purpose, walking home instead.”可知,我开始故意错过下午的校车,步行回家,再结合下文中的“different from the lonely walks I had taken.”

    41.is considered 42.on 43.where 44.a 45.leaving 46.to hug 47.frightened 48.strangers 49.enjoyable 50.widely

故填is considered。
故填on。
故填to hug。
    51.1. advices→advice

    4. better→best
    5. Knowing→Known

    8. of→for
    9. live→living
    10. believed→believe
advice(建议)作名词时为不可数名词。
给某人提供某物offer sb. sth.“给你提供建议”应说成offer you some suggestions。
故将I改为you。
Known for its language and culture courses intended for international students,用源于系表结构(be known for)的过去分词短语作状语。
根据句意理解,“______I believe you will have a rewarding experience.” 故将which改为where。
的事情应表达成a/an……task。
it is/wii be beneficial for sb to do sth ,做某事对某人有益处,应用介词for。故将of改为for。
adjust to doing……
    52.Dear Mike,
I am so glad to receive your letter in which you inquired about my life after school reopened. I am writing to tell you about it.
We live in dormitories, each of which should include no more than four students. With a maximum of 30 students in a class, our classmates stay in two separate classrooms while having classes. Regarding the present situation, our school has implemented the enclosed management, which I think is the most effective way to protect our health and offers us a chance to focus our mind completely on study. Since time is limited, I am determined to call forth all my energy to win in the forthcoming National College Entrance Examination.
Thank you for your concern. All my beset wishes for you.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

I am so glad to receive your letter in which you inquired about my life after school reopened.( 我很高兴收到你的来信,你在信中询问了我开学后的生活。)
Regarding the present situation, our school has implemented the enclosed management, which I think is the most effective way to protect our health and offers us a chance to focus our mind completely on study.( 针对目前的情况,我们学校已经实行了封闭式管理,我认为这是最有效的保护我们健康的方式,给我们提供了一个集中精力学习的机会。)
Since time is limited, I am determined to call forth all my energy to win in the forthcoming National College Entrance Examination.( 由于时间有限,我决心在即将到来的高考中发挥我所有的能量。)
2.使用了一些固定词组,如be glad to do; inquire about; no more than; stay in; offer sb. a chance to do; focus on; be determined to do; call forth all one’s energy to do等。
