Dear Reading Doctor,
I love summer—the weather is nice and sunny (most days!), and all of the colors outside look so bright. The other day, I took the train down to the beach with my mum and we could see lots of colorful things from the window, so we played a game of making up names for every color that we saw—like “angry-teacher pink” for the color of our sunburn! It was really good fun. Are there any books about colors for older kids like me?
Sarah
Dear Sarah,
Colors are as important in life as they are in art. Summer colors can make you feel happy and bright, and winter colors can make you feel sleepy, or sad. Lively spring colors can fill you with energy, and gentle autumn colors can calm you back down. There’s nothing shy about understanding how color works—in fact, it’s the most important skill of any true artist. To see how different colors can be used in different ways, check out the two books below.
Color by Marion Deuchars is full of interesting facts about colors and their place in the world. Did you know that Isaac Newton—famous for having an apple fall on his head— invented the rainbow color wheel that we still use today? Or that most Japanese children draw the sun as red instead of yellow? If you can tell the difference between similar colors, then Color is the book for you!
The Red Tree by Shaun Tan is a wonderful book for understanding how artists use colors to paint feelings. When the main character feels sad, dark leaves float through her bedroom. When she feels bored, her world turns gray. And when she feels hopeful, a beautiful red tree blooms(盛放)in front of her. If you love to paint and draw, The Red Tree will show you how to pick the perfect color for your pictures.
4.Why does Sarah like summer?
A.Summer is the perfect time for reading.
B.The weather and the colors make her excited.
C.She always takes a trip during summer holiday.
D.She can go to the beach with family in summer.
5.Which of the following is the best person to work as Reading Doctor?
A.An English teacher. B.An art college student.
C.A parent who reads a lot. D.An expert on art and kids.
6.How does Reading Doctor recommend the book Color?
A.By expressing feelings after reading it.
B.By comparing the two books he mentioned.
C.By describing how famous it is among children.
D.By asking questions to make Sarah interested in it.
7.What’s the topic of The Red Tree?
A.The perfect color. B.The colors of trees.
C.Colors and feelings. D.The changing feelings.
Since the beginning of time, people have had illnesses and doctors have tried to cure(治愈)them. In the days when people knew very little about medicine, some very strange and terrible cures were tried. Here are some of the worst!
Toothache
Ancient Egyptians(埃及人)who had toothache didn’t use to go to the dentist because there weren’t any dentists in those days. So they used to find a dead mouse and put it in their mouth. They left it there for a few hours. Did it take the toothache away? Who knows!? But aren’t you happy that there’s a dentist near you?
Backache
Backache is no fun at all—people who have it experience a lot of pain. Sometimes it’s because a vertebra(a bone in the back)is out of position. In ancient Greece, doctors used to cure backache like this: they tied the patient to a ladder, pulled the ladder up high and then let it fall to the ground. Bang! The vertebra went back into place. Well, that was the idea, but this “cure” probably just made the backache worse!
Baldness
OK, it’s not really a disease at all. But men whose hair is falling out are never happy about it, are they? The ancient Egyptians had the way to solve it. What did they use to do? They took the fat of a lion, a hippo, a cat and a snake, mixed them together—and then rubbed(涂抹)the mixture into the man’s head. Maybe it stopped baldness, maybe not—but the man’s head certainly didn’t smell too good from then on!
Scrofula
The Middle Ages was a time when there was a common skin disease called scrofula. People who had scrofula could easily be cured—they just had to get the king or queen to touch them! The question is: why would a king or queen want to touch a person who had a skin disease?
8.What can you know according to the text?
A.People who got scrofula used to die from it.
B.These days, people know very little about medicine.
C.When the Egyptians put a mouse in their mouth, it died.
D.Sometimes backache is caused by a bone in the wrong position.
9.What of the following means “Baldness”?
A. B. C. D.
10.What does the writer think of the cures according to the text?
A.They are worth trying. B.They are strange and silly.
C.They are still in use today. D.They are useful but difficult.
11.What is the text mainly about?
A.The ancient life of Egyptians. B.The strange illnesses in the past.
C.The medicine in the ancient time. D.The patients with terrible diseases.
Gabby Salazar takes photographs of rare species(珍稀物种)and teaches people about them. In this interview, she answers questions about her experience with citizen science(公众科学).
What was your first citizen science project?
It was over 10 years ago. One of my friends in Peru was very interested in birds. So we walked around with our cameras and notebooks for a day. We saw many different species, and we took photos of them. Later, we posted all the information on eBird.
What is eBird?
It’s an Internet-based citizen science project at Cornell University in the United States. People around the world record information about birds they see. Today eBird has over 590 million pictures of more than 10, 000 different bird species. Scientists use this information to answer important questions. For example: Where do certain birds live? How many are there?
How can a person become a citizen scientist?
It’s easy. First, find a project that you like online. One of my favorites is iNaturalist, which studies animals and plants. Then, download(下载)the project’s app(应用程序)and use your phone to take pictures. For example, you can photograph different kinds of trees near your home or school. When you’re done, upload(上传)your photos to iNaturalist. If you don’t know the name of an animal or plant, other people can tell you. It’s a great way to learn about your environment, and you also help scientists with their research.
If you can’t take photos, you can still be helpful to citizen science. For example, you can take part in a fun project called Wildwatch Kenya. Experts hide cameras in trees and other places. When an animal moves past, the camera takes a photo. Citizen scientists then review the photos online and recognize the animals they see.
12.What can you know about Gabby Salazar according to the text?
A.She has taken 590 million photos of birds.
B.She describes 3 ways to be a citizen scientist.
C.She teaches people about rare animals and plants.
D.She encourages people to protect the environment.
13.Why is the underlined example mentioned?
A.To express a result. B.To list some numbers.
C.To describe a problem. D.To better explain the point.
14.In the last sentence of paragraph 5, what does “they” refer to?
A.Cameras. B.Images. C.Animals. D.Citizen scientists.
15.What is the purpose of this text?
A.To encourage people to take more photographs.
B.To explain it’s not easy to become a citizen scientist.
C.To describe someone’s experience with citizen science.
D.To answer important questions about certain bird species.

The human brain is only two percent of our total body weight, but it needs about 20% of the oxygen that our body takes in. We can’t think well if our brain isn’t getting enough oxygen. No one can remember everything, but everyone can learn how to improve their memory. Here are some tips—none of them can make your memory 100% perfect, but all of them are helpful:
16 This way the new information becomes more memorable. Later on, think about the conversation with your friend. It will remind you of the information you wanted to remember.
17 When you’ve remembered a list of new words, stop studying. It’s better to study a lot of material for a small amount(数量)of time than a small amount of material for a lot of time! But remember: you do have to practice your new words often!
18 If you want to remember something, go to bed-right after learning it. That is to say, it’s always a good idea to review what you’ve learned before bedtime.
19 For example, it’s easier to remember 198756430387 if you break it into four smaller bits: 198-756-430-387.
20 So sometimes if we want to remember new information, it helps to make a picture story. Anyone can learn to do this. Let yourself be surprised by your memory!
A.Don’t over-train your brain.
B.Our brains works better in pictures.
C.Break something big into small parts.
D.Our memory works well when we are asleep.
E.Don’t get angry because you forget something.
F.Tell a friend you want to remember something.

Dear Jordan,
I am very happy to hear that you are coming to China for a two-week trip. However, I am pretty sorry that I am not available to join you in July because I have to attend a swimming course. Therefore, I am recommending some great cities for you to visit during your stay in China.
Firstly, as the capital city of China, Beijing is really worth visiting. There are many places of interest in Beijing, such as the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and so on. Secondly, Guangzhou is also a must-visit city for those who want to experience a variety of Chinese cultures. You can enjoy delicious Canton food while shopping on Beijing Road and take a ship to travel along the Pearl River at night, watching the ancient and modern buildings alongside the river. In fact, there are numerous wonderful cities for you to explore in China. If it is possible for you, try to visit as more cities in China as you can and enjoy the unique Chinese cultures during your trip.
I hope you can have a wonderful trip in China.
