I used to celebrate my birthday by having a big party at my house. Last year, my parents decided to celebrate my birthday at an orphanage (孤儿院). I didn’t quite like the idea of celebrating my birthday with unfamiliar (不熟悉的) people.
After we entered the orphanage, there rang a bell. I saw 50—60 children gather (聚集) in the central park. Their smiling and happy faces made me smile slowly. The children sang the birthday song to me while I was cutting the cake. The happiness from the children touched my heart when they sang.
As I handed the cakes, each child put arms around me and wished something beautiful for me and my future. I could see the children’s kindness from their eyes. I could not hold back my tears.
We played games happily with the children. I was surprised to see how the older ones helped the younger ones in winning the games. There was laughter everywhere.
After the experience, I can’t help thinking that we are luckier than them. We have parents who celebrate our birthday, but most of these kids didn’t even know when they were born. These kids have gone through so many difficulties, so we should care more about them. And we should make them feel loved and wanted.

Every culture around the world has different ways of communicating. When you learn a language, you learn more than words. You learn many kinds of greetings(问候) in different situations. In China, a traditional greeting is “Have you eaten?” There are also rules for making a small talk when you meet a person. Once you have learned the rules of a language, you can communicate more easily and avoid misunderstandings.
People in different cultures also use different body languages to communicate. In China, for example, nodding your head up and down means “yes”. In some parts of Greece(希腊), it can mean “no”. In Southeast Asia, nodding your head is a polite way of saying “I’ve heard you”. In most areas of the world, if someone wants to praise another person for a great job, he would put up his thumb(拇指). In China, when someone puts his thumb up, it means “You are great!”. However, in Greece, it is impolite and should not be used there.

Lin Chaodai is a 52-year-old cook who won a prize about a robot that could be “trained” to cook. Yet in the past year or so, Lin and 10 other cooks were invited to develop a menu and teach the robots to cook for a new restaurant in Guangzhou.
“Good and traditional taste of dishes depends on perfect cooking skills and standards,” said Lin. So before engineers began their tests, he and other cooks recorded the menu and some important information and then put them into computers.
Customers must order their food by using a touchscreen machine inside the restaurant. Then a food system (系统) collects the materials (材料) and classifies them before sending to 32 robots to cook. After the dishes are completed, the machines then clean themselves, using less water.
“The cooking time of every dish a robotic cook spent is between three to five minutes,” said Yan Weixin, the inventor of the robots.
Restaurants with robots are popular in China as the development of food markets pushes the industry to go digital (数字的). “Robotic kitchens can greatly increase the cooking speed and cut the cost,” said Qiu Mi, manager of one restaurant.
