Tune(曲调): Pride of Fishermen
When autumn comes to the frontier, the scene(风景)looks drear,
South-bound wild geese won’t stay
E’en for a day.
An uproar rises with horns blowing far and near.
Walled in by peaks, smoke rises straight
At sunset over isolate town with fastened gate.
I hold a cup of wine, yet home is far ▲ ,
The Northwest is not won and I’m obliged to stay.
At the flutes’ doleful sound
Over frost-covered ground,
None fall asleep,
The general’s hair turns white and soldiers weep.
Fan Zhongyan (989-1052) was famous for his work Notes on the Yueyang Tower. Its line “To be the first in the country to worry about the affairs of the state and the last to enjoy oneself is often used.Fan was not just a ci composer(词人), but also a famous statesman(政治家).
In the early Song Dynasty(960-1279), ci composers usually wrote about love and court(宫廷)life. But Fan Zhongyan’s ci included different topics. He focused on the life of soldiers. Pride of Fishermen is a good example.
Based on the writer’s own experience, this ci shows the hard life soldiers had and their homesickness(思乡). At the time, Fan led an army to fight against the Western Xia, which was to the northwest of Song. As he grew up in Suzhou, much farther south, he couldn’t get used to the weather. That’s why the first line of the piece uses the word “drear”. The following lines in the first part describe more about the hardship. For example, the isolated town was in great danger. The second part shows how much Fan and the soldiers missed home.
However, the ci doesn’t only focus on homesickness. Instead, it mixes both patriotic(爱国的)love with homesickness, creating a sad but real poetic atmosphere(氛围).
61.What is the Chinese for the tune of this ci?

B.He couldn’t bear the hardship of being a soldier, so he didn’t like the scene.
C.The weather in the northwest was so different from his hometown, so he felt sad.
D.He thought things in the northwest were not good.
64.From this ci, we know Fan Zhongyan ________.
A.was good at fighting and guiding. B.owned deep feeling for soldiers and homeland
C.played an important role in Song’s history D.was a great ci composer and a famous statesman
65.What’s the main idea of the piece?
A.The hard life and the patriotic love of soldiers. B.The anger to the enemy and the war.
C.Sadness and disappointment to the emperor. D.Deeply missing families and hometown.
How many digits of pi (圆周率位数) can you remember? Just 3.1415926? Well, this may not be good enough for scientists.
Swiss researchers said they broke a new record. Using a supercomputer, they counted pi to 62.8 trillion (万亿) digits. The team, at University of Applied Sciences in Graubunden, Switzerland, took 108 days and nine hours to do this!
It was “3.5 times as fast as the former world record in 2020”, which reached 50 trillion digits, according to the university. Researchers are waiting for the Guinness Book of Records to certify (认证) their efforts.
Since it was first discovered and understood 4,000 years ago, humans have been trying to count pi as exactly as possible. Zu Chongzhi (429-500), a Chinese mathematician (数学家) , counted pi between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927. Nobody surpassed (超过) his results for about 1,000 years — until Al-Kashi, an Iranian (伊朗的) mathematician, counted it to 16 decimal places (小数位).
Why do we need to know an exact value (数值) of pi? “It’s used everywhere, from the general relativity (广义相对论) of Einstein to your GPS to all kinds of engineering problems,” Jan de Gier, a math professor at the University of Melbourne, Australia, told The Guardian.
It’s true that pi pops up everywhere. But is it too much to count it to 62.8 trillion digits? “I can’t imagine any real-life use where you would need any more than 15 decimal places,” said David Harvey from the University of New South Wales, Australia. However, De Gier compares this to the Olympic Games: “World records are not useful by themselves, but they set a benchmark (基准) and they teach us about what we can achieve.”
“It’s a big challenge for computers,” Harvey agreed. “It’s really a difficult thing to do and it needs lots of math and computer science.”
66.What part of this story is news?
A.An exact value of pi is used everywhere. B.The value of pi was counted to a further number.
C.The former value of pi was proven to be incorrect. D.A supercomputer was developed in Switzerland.
67.The former Guinness record of the value of pi reached ________.
A.7 decimal places B.16 decimal places C.50 trillion digits D.62.8 trillion digits
68.Paragraph 4 is mainly about ________.
A.why we work on the value of pi B.how to find the value of pi
C.the person who discovered pi D.the history of pi studies
69.Harvey agrees that ________.
A.we only use pi in scientific studies B.pi is used everywhere in our lives
C.we need a more exact value of pi D.it’s worthless to work on the value of pi
70.In De Gier’s opinion, to set a world record is ________.
A.simple B.useless C.impossible D.meaningful
① Your third year of middle school was probably a tough and busy time. You may have had trouble getting enough sleep. We all know that not getting enough sleep is not good for our health. But it has been found that less sleep may also cause you to have fewer friends, the Guardian reported.
②According to researchers from the University of California, people who don’t get enough sleep are less willing to socialize(社交) with others. They are simply too tired to go out. The researchers did a small study. They tested 18 young people who had just had a good night’s sleep—as well as tested them again after a sleepless night. The participants watched videos of people with neutral(中性的) expressions walking toward them. When the person on the video got too “close” to them, they pushed a button(按钮) to stop the video, which recorded how close they allowed the person to get.
③The results showed that the participants kept the person at a distance of 60 percent further back if they hadn’t gotten enough sleep. They felt that their personal space was being broken. But when the participants got a good night’s sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them.
④According to lead researcher Matthew Walker, the less sleep you get, the less you want to socialize with others. In turn, other people may think you are strange and stay away from you. This can make you feel lonely and cause you to sleep even less. It becomes a vicious cycle(恶性循环).
⑤So if you want to be a more sociable and popular person, sleeping well might help. One night of good sleep makes you feel more outgoing and socially confident.
71.Researchers from the University of California believe that less sleep ________.
A.makes school life tough and busy B.is good for one’s health
C.makes people less sociable D.causes people to become excited
72.How did the researchers prove their point?
A.They did tests on 18 young people. B.They watched videos of sleepless people.
C.They interviewed people on the street. D.They invited people to join a game.
73.What does Paragraph 4 tell us?
A.The proper distance to keep from others is 60 cm. B.People don’t like sharing their personal space.
C.People are more sociable after a good sleep. D.Don’t get too close to sleepless people.
74.Mathew Walker would agree that ________.
A.people who sleep less are strange B.loneliness makes people sleep more
C.popular people always sleep well D.sleeping well makes people confident
75.Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage? (① = Paragraph 1)
A. B. C. D.

Many people say volleyball is easy. “As long as you can hit it in the air, you can play volleyball.” I used to be one of those people. But recently I realized how ignorant(无知的) I was.
My start in volleyball was hard. After practicing with my mother, I was full of confidence that I could join my school team and shock everyone. I would no longer be known as a book-hugging nerd(书呆子)!
My dream was broken the next day, when I played with the team. It turned out that despite my “skills” , I was unable to cooperate with other players. I also couldn’t handle balls coming from different directions. I was upset. Isn’t volleyball just about hitting the ball? I began several weeks of training with the team. Then, we had our first match against Park School. Most of my teammates had no experience competing. Looking at the Park School players, full of energy, I could already see our defeat(失败).
The ball went up. One “thump(锤击)”, a second “thump”, and I leapt up(一跃而起) with a shout. It flew over the net. I was totally caught up in the game, feeling in harmony with my teammates. The sounds of running feet, loud shouts and cheers filled us with warmth. During our break, everyone was sweaty(汗流浃背的) and excited, talking about our teamwork.
That’s when I realized that being on the school team meant playing as a whole. I understood how cooperation is a kind of beauty in itself. Volleyball helped me make friends, learn new things, and find my true self within a group.

When I have something difficult to do, I always ask my mom, “Could you help me?” But she always says, “Do it yourself, dear.” Then I get so sad. I think she is a lazy mother.
For example, one day, I invited some friends to my home. My bedroom was out of order. Books were all over the table and the floor. So I asked my mother to help me. But she said seriously, “Do it yourself, girl.” So I did it myself.
Because of my “lazy” mom, I am supposed to wash my clothes and clean my room. I have to help my parents do some housework. I even have to go to the dentist by myself if I have a toothache. It’s really hard to do everything on my own, but I have learned a lot.
But now, I understand my mother. It’s her “laziness” that makes me clever and hard-working. And she is also a good teacher.

A small kind act
It was one of those days—I failed another exam. As I was about to cross the street to my home, I dropped all the exam papers.
Annoyed, I tried to gather the papers. At that moment, a stranger lent me a helping hand.
I got up with all the papers safely under my arm and wanted to thank him. He just gave me a warm smile and disappeared into the crowd. Suddenly, the world didn’t seem such a bad place.
Today, I am still grateful to that stranger. His small, kind act inspired me to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.
高阶范文:
A small kind act
It was a bright Monday morning when I hurried to school. By the time I arrived at the intersection, the traffic light was about to turn Red in 10 seconds. Just as I was ready to rush forward, I noticed an old woman hobbling along with her cane, trying to cross the road. But the driver shouted to her impatiently and she moved forward panic-stricken.
Seeing all this, I took a few steps back and came to the old woman’s side. “It’s okay. I’ll walk with you.” I said to her. Everyone was stunned. I held her hand and walked side by side with her. Soon, the light turned red, but no one rushed out. When we finally reached the other side of the road, she thanked me many times. Seeing her joyful face, I knew I made her day. And my face was just as red as the morning sun.
The roses in her hand, the favor in mine. That’s what I’ve learned from this small act of kindness.
