Sunday Bakeshop in Oakland, California, makes foods that mix American and Asian cultures. The restaurant makes foods that are cooked or baked in an oven. Many of them are sweet. For example, the shop sells something called a dim sum cookie. It looks like a sugar cookie but has sesame (芝麻) seeds on top and sweetened red beans inside. Dim sum is a word for Cantonese foods from southern China.
The dim sum cookie is Elaine Lau’s way of honoring her grandmother who would make a kind of food that had a similar taste. Lau’s restaurant also makes a kind of Chinese candy cookies. Those sweets would not be found in any bakery in Asia but are a mixture of Asian and Western foods. Lau said she speaks to Asian Americans and others at her store. She said, “We get a lot of comments, for example, ‘The cookies are just like little lovely kitties and puppies.’ ‘Oh this took me back to several years ago when I was growing up.’” She added that it was nice to create good memories and feelings with her pastries (糕点).
Bakeries that combine the feeling of growing up Asians and Americans have been opening up more often in recent years. Traditional Asian ingredients are being mixed with European or American pastries into something new. The creations are a way for young Asian Americans to celebrate their identity.
“Older traditional Asian bakeries make foods that immigrants miss from their home country. The new bakeries celebrate Asian culture and are part of a natural progression,” said Robert Ku, who is an Asian American studies professor at Binghamton University in New York state. He also wrote the book Dubious Gastronomy: The Cultural Politics of Eating Asian in the USA.
“The bakers are showing that their foods, which mix cultures, are just as American as apple pie. It’s sort of the artistic side of Asian American identity that’s often ignored,” Ku said. “They’re instead really trying to fuse things together.”
24. What does Elaine think of her work?
A. Tiring. B. Demanding.
C. Confusing. D. Rewarding.
根据第二段中顾客对这个面包店食物的评论,以及最后一句“She added that it was nice to create good memories and feelings with her pastries.”
25. What are the older traditional Asian bakeries trying to do?
A. Create a new way of showing their identities.
B. Celebrate the Asian culture in foreign countries.
C. Remind the immigrants of their hometown flavor.
D. Introduce young Asian Americans to new culture.
根据第四段中的“‘Older traditional Asian bakeries make foods that immigrants miss from their home country.’”
26. What does the underlined word “fuse” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Combine. B. Improve.
C. Invent. D. Consume.
根据最后一段中的“‘The bakers are showing that their foods, which mix cultures, are just as American as apple pie. It’s sort of the artistic side of Asian American identity that’s often ignored,’”可知,面包师展示的食物混合了不同的文化。 故选A。
答案:A
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Asian American Cookies Become American’s Favorite Food
B. Varieties of New Asian Foods Are Created by American Cooks
C. Asian American Bakeries Mix Together Cultures to Create New Foods
D. Traditional Asian Food Becomes Popular with American Young People

答案:C

Obviously, most people who try to lose weight generally focus all or most of their attention on the foods they eat. But what about their behaviour? Are there habits they could be breaking that would also help them lose weight?
According to the Ohio State University Extension, which summarised the findings, the researchers learned people who routinely ate breakfasts, lunches, and dinners tended to have more success losing weight than people whose eating schedules were irregular. As a bonus, they were also more likely to eat a larger quantity of fruit and vegetables.
One activity that brought a disaster to people who wanted to lose weight was watching television, particularly if they ate while watching TV—and especially if they ate while watching TV after 7 p.m. People who did these things, including simply watching a lot of television, tended to have a higher body mass index (BMI), as well as a higher intake of fat and sugars.
Those who ate out a lot also tended to take in more fat and sugars, while eating a smaller quantity of fruit and vegetables. For the purpose of the study, eating away from home was defined not only as eating in restaurants but also eating food provided by an employer, eating food provided by colleagues at work, and buying food at convenience stores or gas stations.
Finally, the best results were achieved by those motivated people who kept written track of the amount and type of exercise they did and how many calories they ate, who planned meals, and used meal replacements. Those who did these things the most generally lost more weight, ate less fat and fewer sugars, ate more fruit and vegetables, and engaged in more physical activities.
So cutting out all those high-calorie snacks will help you lose weight. But so, apparently, will change some of your habits and behaviours.
28. What can we know from the text?
A. Eating irregularly will leave you in a good figure.
B. Regular eating routine is good for losing weight.
C. Losing weight depends on food a person eats.
D. Fruit and vegetables can keep you healthy.
根据第二段中的“the researchers learned people who routinely ate breakfasts, lunches, and dinners tended to have more success losing weight than people whose eating schedules were irregular.”
29. Why did some people fail to lose weight?
A. Because they did nothing but watch TV after 7 a.m.
B. Because they were fond of watching TV at noon.
C. Because they had a particular love for sweets.
D. Because they developed a kind of bad habit.
根据第三段中的“One activity that brought a disaster to people who wanted to lose weight was watching television, particularly if they ate while watching TV—and especially if they ate while watching TV after 7 p.m.”
30. What does the fourth paragraph imply?
A. The bosses like to invite his employees to dinner.
B. More and more people are content to eat out.
C. Eating away from home does harm to health.
D. It is very convenient to have dinners outside.
根据该段第一句“Those who ate out a lot also tended to take in more fat and sugars, while eating a smaller quantity of fruit and vegetables.”
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the test?
A. To help people get more motivation.
B. To encourage people to eat at home.
C. To advise people to refuse calories.
D. To tell people that they need to change their habits to lose weight.

San Francisco has some of the best restaurants anywhere—and one of the most unique, the top pizza restaurant in the city, is also one of the first to be owned and operated totally by deaf people.
Melody and Russell Stein opened the place in 2011. Their 900-degree wood-fired oven (炉) is the best they could find, and so is every ingredient, from sauce to sausage, to cheese, some of which come from Italy. “We also make it in-house,” said Melody. “And if that doesn’t make you hungry, I don’t know what will,” added Russell.
And for the customers who show up there night after night, food is only part of the experience. Unlike other restaurants, noise isn’t a problem, and neither is communication; pointing at the menu works just fine. And you can even phone in a takeout order. A green light on the wall signals an incoming call. An operator picks it up, and translates your order in sign language by a special TV.
But this is about a lot more than serving hungry customers.
Tracy Smith, a reporter, asked Melody, “How important is it to you to have an all-deaf staff?”
“Oh, it’s very important,” she replied. “If a hearing person, say, doesn’t get on well here, they can find a job tomorrow, while all the deaf people here have to look for years and still can’t find a job. That’s when I decided I would have a totally deaf team, even if they have no work experience.”
Melody comes from a restaurant-owning family from Hong Kong, and she met Russell at Gallaudet University.
Now they’re looking to franchise (获得特许经销权), with a little help from the Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD). It’s a good investment (投资), says CSD’s Brandi Rarus.
Rarus said, “People often think that deaf people don’t have much to offer, or are less valuable, or less worthy in some ways. But when you come to this place, you see that’s not true.”
32. How does Russell feel about the food in his restaurant?
A. Confident. B. Disappointed.
C. Surprised. D. Uncertain.
根据第二段中的“And if that doesn’t make you hungry, I don’t know what will”可知,罗素对店里的食物很有信心。故选A。
答案:A
33. Who is most likely to be employed by Russell’s restaurant?
A. A food journalist.
B. A top university graduate.
C. A deaf girl with little work experience.
D. A man good at communicating with others.
根据第六段中的“That’s when I decided I would have a totally deaf team, even if they have no work experience.”
34. What does Rarus think of Russell’s restaurant?
A. It tops the local restaurants.
B. It will close down sooner or later.
C. It needs to employ hearing workers.
D. It makes people see things differently.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Enjoying Pizza in Russell’s Restaurant
B. The Rise of Deaf-owned Business
C. All-deaf Pizza Restaurant Is All-good
D. Building Bridges Through Communication

I pulled the car into the garage and got out, just like every night for the past 16 years. The difference was that I wouldn’t have to work in the morning.
I slammed the car door. I used to be a leader of a national bank until it was closed. I’d put my heart and soul into my job. Not only did I work long hours, but also I was on call 24 hours a day, on weekends and holidays. If someone had a technical problem, even at 2:00 a.m. on Christmas morning, I was on it.
My kids joked that even though they were teenagers, I was the one who was absorbed in my cell phone and had to be told not to text at the dinner table.
My wife, Michelle, had been able to go to work full-time as an office manager once we heard my job was threatened. But our son, TJ, was a high school senior, and the girls, Sarah and Tara, were in ninth grade. And I wanted to give them the education and opportunities they deserved. “If I can’t provide anything for my family,” I asked, “what good am I?”
I opened the garage door and stepped out into our yard. The lawn and flower beds that my mum had tended so carefully were overrun with weeds. There was a maple tree in the middle of the yard that my parents planted when I was a boy. It needed caring. But I’d put on a lot of weight—no time to exercise with my crazy hours. I went up to the house. Michelle greeted me at the door with a hug. “It’s going to be okay. We will get through it,” she said. “Maybe you should think of this time as a break. You deserve one.”
“I’m sorry, Dad,” TJ said. “I know how much your job meant to you.” His concern was mirrored in the girls’ faces.
“I’ll take care of this,” I told them. “I’m going to work round the clock to find a new job and make our lives go back to normal.”
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150左右;
The next morning, I got up before everyone else. _______________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The new lawn I’d planned for so long began to take shape and so did I.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
答案:
The next morning, I got up before everyone else. I made a pot of coffee and opened my laptop. I searched job sites, companies and emailed my friends. By then Michelle and the kids were up. “This isn’t a problem you need to solve today. Take some time for yourself,” my wife said. By mid-morning the quiet of the house was driving me crazy. I missed the noise of the office. I walked outside and my gaze fell on those overgrown flower beds. I cleared a small patch. Every day I took breaks to do other things I’d neglected.
The new lawn I’d planned for so long began to take shape and so did I. With the physical labour, the extra weight dropped off, and I felt healthier than I had in ages. The flower beds and the maple tree looked great. The five of us hung out on the deck while I made dinner on the grill. This was the last year TJ would be home. Sarah and Tara would go to senior school soon too. If I hadn’t had this time with them, I’d be wishing for it. Now I had the time. I could spend time with my children. I could be a good father and a good husband during this time. I had the chance to find a healthy balance between work and home.
