The Torch Festival(火把节) is a traditional festival which is celebrated among some ethnic groups in southwestern China, such as the Yi, Bai, Hani, Lisu and Lahu, etc. It usually falls on the 24th or 25th of June, with three days of celebrations. The festival came from worship(崇拜) of fire by ancestors. For some ethnic groups, it’s a tradition in the festival for elders to share farming experience with young people and educate them on taking care of crops.
During the festival, big torches are made to stand in all villages, with small torches placed in front of the door of each house. When night falls, the torches are lit and the villages are bright. At the same time, people walk around the fields and houses, holding small torches and placing the torches in the field corners. Inside the villages, young people are singing and dancing around the big torches that keep burning throughout the night. Other activities like horse races are also held during the festival.
In a horse race of the Yi people in Yunnan, torches are used to form hurdles for riders to get through. The Hani people in Yunnan traditionally tie fruits to torches with strings. When the strings are broken after the torches are lit, people struggle for the fruits for good luck.
For the Lisu people in Sichuan, the festival is an occasion for holding torch parades(游行). Big torches are carried by teams of people, which is like a fire dragon. If different teams meet, it’s a tradition to exchange the big torches with one another.

As a little girl, one of my favourite family traditions was held on the first day of May. Along with my sister, my mother and I would make simple flower baskets by making paper into cones(圆锥形). Then, we filled the bottom of the cone with small candies before putting some flowers into it.
With our May Day baskets in hand, my sister and I became anonymous gift-givers. After hanging a basket on the front door of a neighbour or friend, we rang the doorbell and ran away. The goal was to remain secret givers.
Historically, the first day of May, often referred to as “May Day”, has been recognised as a celebration of spring, of life and growth. Parades and dances are ways that the day has been—and continues to be—celebrated in many parts of the world. Although formal May Day celebrations may be less common now, it is always worth celebrating. Here are some simple and lovely ways to celebrate May Day in our homes and with those we love:
Making a May Day basket is always a great choice. Although the May Day basket we made as children was simple, the making of the basket was a joy in itself. Consider making or buying some flowers for friends. Fill the basket with a few sweets and write a note thanking your friend or neighbour for their kindness, their presence and their love.
On May Day, we also take flowers to a local hospital or nursing home. Flowers are always welcome in places that are too often full of sadness. Stopping to have a conversation with a patient and thanking a nurse would be an additional gift—to the receiver and to us!
Besides, we always give friends small gifts to celebrate May Day. A small book or magazine with a note, an art print celebrating spring—the choices are endless. When your friends are far away, an unexpected gift can reawaken friendship across the miles.
28. What does the underlined part “anonymous gift-givers” refer to?
A. People who are serious about gift-giving.
B. People who don’t know the value of gifts.
C. People who are careful about every small detail.
D. People who give gifts but don’t want their names to be known.
解析:词义猜测题。根据画线部分后的“After hanging a basket ... we rang the doorbell and ran away.”和“secret givers”可知,anonymous gift-givers的意思应该是“匿名的赠送礼物者”。
答案:D
29. What do we know about May Day from the text?
A. It is celebrated all over the world.
B. The date of its celebration has changed.
C. It traditionally celebrates the arrival of spring.
D. There is an increase in formal May Day celebrations.
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段首句“Historically ... a celebration of spring, of life and growth.”可知,五朔节是庆祝春天到来的节日。
答案:C
30. What is May Day in the author’s eyes?
A. It is a great chance to express thanks.
B. It is a great chance to visit faraway friends.
C. It is a great chance to read a book or magazine.
D. It is a great chance to stay with family members.
解析:推理判断题。根据第四段中的“... write a note thanking your friend or neighbour for their kindness, their presence and their love.”和第五段中的“thanking a nurse”可知,在作者看来,五朔节是一个很好的表达感谢的机会。
答案:A
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The history of May Day.
B. Great family traditions.
C. Celebrating May Day.
D. Flowers for festivals.
解析:主旨大意题。通读全文可知,本文主要介绍了庆祝五朔节的一些方式。故选C。

(2022·新高考全国Ⅱ卷)
We journalists live in a new age of storytelling, with many new multimedia tools. Many young people don’t even realize it’s new. For them, it’s just normal.
This hit home for me as I was sitting with my 2-year-old grandson on a sofa over the Spring Festival holiday. I had brought a children’s book to read. It had simple words and colourful pictures—a perfect match for his age.
Picture this: my grandson sitting on my lap as I hold the book in front so he can see the pictures. As I read, he reaches out and pokes(戳) the page with his finger.
What’s up with that?He just likes the pictures, I thought. Then I turned the page and continued. He poked the page even harder. I nearly dropped the book. I was confused: Is there something wrong with this kid?
Then I realized what was happening. He was actually a stranger to books. His father frequently amused the boy with a tablet computer which was loaded with colourful pictures that come alive when you poke them. He thought my storybook was like that.
Sorry, kid. This book is not part of your high-tech world. It’s an outdated, lifeless thing. An antique, like your grandfather. Well, I may be old, but I’m not hopelessly challenged, digitally speaking. I edit video and produce audio. I use mobile payment. I’ve even built websites.
There’s one notable gap in my new-media experience, however: I’ve spent little time in front of a camera, since I have a face made for radio. But that didn’t stop China Daily from asking me last week to share a personal story for a video project about the integration of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province.
Anyway, grandpa is now an Internet star—two minutes of fame!I promise not to let it go to my head. But I will make sure my 2-year-old grandson sees it on his tablet.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I saw her tonight, she recognised me and smiled sweetly. I smiled back at her. She looked more relaxed even though she was still busy doing her job. I had noticed her several times during the last few months and she looks so much happier now. Tonight when I talked with her, I noticed her name tag. Her name is Pamela.
Pamela works at the express checkouts(结账处) in a busy supermarket. She deals with problems when the self-serve checkout has a problem (no price tag on the product, machine problems, etc.). She monitors these checkouts and often she has hardly dealt with one complaint(抱怨) before another appears.
When I first talked to Pamela, I called her to the checkout I was using. There wasn’t any problem with the checkout though. My problem or should I say care was about Pamela. She looked tired and was under a lot of stress as she quickly moved from one checkout to the next. It’s a bit of a fire-fighting job.
I told Pamela that she needed to slow down. I told her that we, the customers, could wait and it was very bad for her health to put herself under too much pressure. I told her that customers’ expectations(期望) were not as high as she had imagined. Pamela told me she would follow my advice. I could tell she was touched—not only did I notice her stress but I chose to talk to her about it. I was concerned about her well-being. I gently told her that things had to be changed. I also told her I would pay more attention to her in the future to see if she would make any changes. She smiled and said, “I promise I will.”

答案:
When I saw her again, she was still doing her job but there was such a difference. Now Pamela said that customers would just wait their turn when she was dealing with another customer. She also solved the machine problems in order. She was cool and calm in her job. I was happy to see these changes in her and I praised her. She told me that not only did she tell her husband what I had said, but she also shared it with a lot of her partners.
I am proud of myself. I walked away from Pamela with a light heart. She has listened to me and in turn encouraged her partners to slow down and reminded them to care about their health. I have succeeded in helping Pamela to reduce stress and feel relaxed. Most importantly, it seemed that I also helped others at the same time. We are very small, but we are capable of big things. I really feel very happy and satisfied.
