If Confucius(孔夫子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually included Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take adventages of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Westerners philosophy. Students in the United Sates, at the same time, are racing to lean Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well. Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

I’ve noticed that conversations with my children have started to tum into something that I don’t like. It could be my fault. I don’t always think before l open my mouth.

What they’re hoping for is a safe place to talk with a person who loves and supports them.

My mother and I had a happy life. She worked during the day. I played with the other young horses and had great fun. At night I lay next to her.
One day, my master sold me to Squire Gordon. He lived with his family in a big house. “You’re a beautiful horse,” he said. “You have a beautiful black coat. I shall call you Black Beauty.”
I learned to carry my master on my back and pull a coach. I leaned to ware reins (缆绳) and a bit in my mouth, I did not like them but all the horses had to wear them.
My master had two horses. One of them was Merrylegs. He was very friendly. The other was Ginger. She was not friendly. She bit and kicked people.
Ginger and I palled a coach together. The coachman’s name was John Ginger and I worked very hard. We became friends.
Ginger told me about her life when she was young. She told me, “My master was not kind to me. My reins and bit hurt me. My master did not care.”
Squire Gordon and his men felt sorry for Ginger. They were always kind to her. She stopped biting and kicking people. She became a happy horse.
One day in autumn Squire Gordon went on a long journey, John went with him and I pulled the coach. The weather was rainy and windy. Mr. Gordon and John could not see well in the rain. We came to a bridge. I stopped. “Something is wrong.” I thought, I did not want to go on to the bridge. Mr. Gordon and John wanted me to go on to the bridge. I did not move. Just then a man saw us. “Hey! There! Stop!” he cried.
“What is it?” shouted the Squire.
“The bridge is broken in the middle,” he answered. “If you go on to it, you are all going to drown in the river.” “Thank God!” said the Squire. “Thank you, Beauty!” said John. We turned around and went along the road by the river. For a long time no one said anything. Then John said, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”

Think about how much reading you do every day. When you look at it, you might find that reading is the work-related skill that you use most often! 37 After all, if we can read and comprehend textbooks, then aren’t we good readers? Maybe not. Given the time that reading consumes, it may be a skill that we can and should improve.
38 It means getting faster and more efficient at reading, while still understanding what you’re reading. Although you spend a good part of your day reading, have you ever thought about how you read? How do your eyes make sense of the shapes of the letters, and then put those letters together to form sentences that you can understand?
Reding is quite a complex skill. It was previously believed during reading, both eyes focus on particular letters. 39 Scientists now believe that the eyes lock onto different letters at the same time, usually two characters apart. Your brain then fuses(融合) these imagines together to form a word. This happens very swiftly, as we look through pages of text.
Many people read an average rate of 250 words per minute. This means that an average page in a book or document takes 1-2 minutes to read. Imagine, then, if you could double your rate to 500 words per minute, 40 You could then spend the saved time on other tasks, or take a few extra minutes to relax. Another important advantage of speed reading is that it allows one to better comprehend the overall structure of an argument. This leads to better “big picture” understanding, which can greatly benefit your work and career.
A.Recent research shows this isn’t the case.
B.Speed reading has a great many benefits.
C.You should practice to improve your reading speed.
D.But what does becoming a better reader include?
E.You could read all of this content in half the time.
F.It’s also a skill that most of us take for granted when we reach age 12.

故填how。
根据“It asks them to pay more attention to their...online activities.”
根据“The MOE also sent an important notice lo primary and middle schools”可知,空处填非谓语动词。

根据“they can get help from their teachers...up their addiction”可知,空处填不定式,表目的,即他们可以从老师那里得到帮助,戒除毒瘾。故填to give。

根据“To make...use of their free time, they can develop some hobbies, like reading and playing sports.”
51.Is his progress well worth speaking highly of?
his“他的”,progress“进步”,be well worth doing sth“很值得做某事”,speak highly of“高度赞扬”。 Is his progress well worth speaking highly of?

54. My cousin was so curious about the news he couldn’t wait to look through
My cousin was so curious about the news。从句部分的主语是“he”,“迫不及待做某事”,用“can’t wait to do sth.”来表达;“浏览”英语表达为“look through”;从句时态也为一般过去时,故第二空填he couldn’t wait to look through。故填My cousin was so curious about the news;he couldn’t wait to look through。
55.Neither Jim nor his mother regrets booking tickets online
故填Neither Jim nor his mother regrets booking tickets online。
56. How terrible it is to live in fear of their lives
因此第一空应填How terrible it is;“生活”live,“在为生命安全担忧中”应用介词短语in fear of one’s life,根据“people in war”可知此处应用形容词性物主代词their来指代“战争中的人们的”,名词life也应用其复数形式lives,根据“to do”可知此处应用动词live的原形,因此第二空应填to live in fear of their lives。故填How terrible it is;to live in fear of their lives。
