W: Too bad. I need to get back to the office, but I also have to withdraw some money.
    (Text 6)
M: Hi, Iris. ⑥⑦What are you still doing here? I thought you were working a half day, so you could prepare for your trip to the beach.
W: That was my plan, but the weather report is calling for rain this weekend. It’s supposed to be nicer next weekend.
M: ⑦So will you go next weekend instead?
W: ⑦Yeah, I think I’ll stay at home this weekend and work a half day next Friday. I’d rather go when the weather is better.
    (Text 7)
M: So, Selina, have you heard back yet about the marketing job you applied for?
W: Yes. I got a phone call this morning. I’m going to have an interview with the marketing director tomorrow morning.
M: Good for you! Where’s the interview going to be held?
W: At the company head office at Milan Street. It’s very close to your office. ⑨Why don’t we have lunch tomorrow? I’ll tell you all about it.
    M: ⑨That’s OK. Let’s meet at 11:30.
    (Text 8)
M: Amanda, could you make a call to the cinema to see if there are still some seats left for the movie this afternoon?
W: ⑩I’ve already booked tickets online for the two o’clock movie. ⑫I’m thinking of picking them up from the ticket office on the way to the restaurant. What do you think?
M: ⑫OK. Well, ⑪the Smiths want to move our appointment forward by a half hour earlier. That means we should be there at 11:30.
W: Then we don’t have enough time. We’d better get moving. Oh, before I forget, can you remind me to stop by the bookstore on the way back home? I have to order a book there.
    M: OK.
    (Text 9)
W: Hi, Scott! How are you?
M: Oh hi, Rebecca! I’m tired.
W: Well, don’t go to bed so late!
M: But I don’t. I watch sports on TV and then I go to bed at about nine fifteen. ⑬The problem is I wake up really early.
    W: Why’s that?
M: ⑭I take the boat to school now, and it goes at half past seven in the morning, so my mum wakes me up at a quarter past six. I have breakfast and leave home at seven.
W: So have you changed schools, then?
M: Yes. The school on our island is for six to eleven year olds. Now I’m twelve.
W: Oh, I see. So do you get home late in the evening?
M: Quite late. The boat back home is two hours after school. ⑮My mum’s sister lives near the school so I go and have dinner at her house.
W: ⑯When do you have time to do your homework?
M: ⑯I usually find a quiet table on the boat. When I get home, I watch TV, listen to musicor use the computer.

W: Actually, Neil, I’ve been doing some research into my family history.

【原文】W: This is ridiculous. The beef is overdone and we have been waiting for the dessert for half an hour now.
M: I am terribly sorry, ma’am. But it is busy season and we are short-handed now.

【原文】M: These two ties look very nice. How much are they?

M: Oh, yes, I’m calling to inquire about joining the club.
W: Fine, what would you like to know?
M: Well, I wanted to get a picture of what the club is like, for example, how big is it?
W: Well, that changes each year, of course. Cycling is growing in popularity. The number of the cyclists has increased by 20% so far...

【原文】M: How long are you planning to stay here?
W: I've got 2 weeks altogether. What do you suggest I see?
M: Well, some of our national parks are highly recommended. You've got lots of old buildings in your country. Ours is a fairly new country, but I guess we've got some of the most beautiful mountains and countryside in the world. It might be a great idea to hire a car and drive around for a couple of weeks?
W: Is it expensive to rent a car?
M: No, not very. You need a driving license. Have you got one?
    W: Yes.
M: I think you'd better fly somewhere in the west. Then you can pick up a car and travel around.
W: That sounds great! Thanks a lot.

W: Let me see. Yes, here we are. There’s a flight leaving at 2:40, getting in at 5:15. Is that OK?
    M: That’s fine.
W: All right. I’ll just change your ticket. Do you have baggage to check in?
    M: Here’s my baggage. Can I take this as a carry-on?
W: Yes, that’s fine. No problem. Here’s your ticket. It leaves at Gate 54. Be there one hour before departure.
    M: Thank you very much.
    W: You’re welcome. Have a good trip.

【原文】W: Do you ever try to learn English by watching TV?
M: Sometimes. But they talk so fast that I can’t make out the words. It’s much too hard to understand.
W: I know what you mean. I have never understood the jokes in the comedies. People in this country have a strange sense of humor.
M: But sometimes I can figure out some of the phrases and idioms, so I seem to be learning.
W: That’s good. Well, I think we should be out talking to people instead of watching TV.
M: You’re right. But that’s really hard. Yesterday, I was waiting in line at the cafeteria. It seemed like an hour and I got very angry. The guy behind me told me to “keep my shirt on”. I had no idea what he meant. About ten minutes later, the meaning dawned on me.
    W: What does it mean?
    M: “Be patient.”
W: How did you figure that out?
M: From the situation, he wasn’t angry. He was calm. Besides, I didn't think he was interested in my shirt!
W: That adds up. You’re very good at figuring out idioms, man!

【原文】Fast food isn’t quite as fast as it used to be. A new study finds that McDonald’s has posted its slowest drive-through time since the service was first conducted 15 years ago. At McDonald’s, customers spend on average 3 minutes and 9 seconds from the time they place their orders until they receive their food, as about ten seconds more than the industry average, a lot slower than a decade ago according to the study, which was conducted by QSR, an industry trade publication. And McDonald’s isn’t alone in slowing down; other chains also see their drive-through performance slow down. Among the reasons for the slowing service, today there are more choices on the menu and products themselves are more complex and take longer to prepare. Speed, of course, is essential to the drive-through experience, and drive-throughs are hugely important to chains such as McDonald’s, Burger King and Tacobell. Usually, the drive-through accounts for 60 to 70 percent of all business that go through a fast food restaurant, notes Sam Ochers, editor of QSR. Of course, consumers also want their orders prepared correctly, and on that score, Ochers says accuracy is still really high.
