George Stephenson told the people that the train could go on small rails, and it could pull carriages full of things and passengers and there was no great danger to them. It was difficult for him to make them believe (相信). However, after some time, he was able to do it, and the first train that was driven by Stephenson himself showed what he had said. On the train there was a new steam engine. It was invented by him, and it was a complete success. The first day when the train ran on the rails, people along the way heard the noise and saw it running quickly to them. They ran quickly back home and closed their doors. Many great inventions changed the way we live. The first great invention was the one that is still very important today — the wheel.
There were few inventions that had as much influence as the wheel for many years. In the early 1800s, the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People began to work to make life better.
In the 19th century, many great inventions such as the camera, the light and the telephone came into being.
The 20th century saw more great inventions — movies with sound in 1910, the computer in 1946, and jet planes (喷气式飞机)in the 1930s. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wore.
By this time human beings had a strong wish to explore (探索)again. The world was known to human beings but the stars were not. Human beings began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space.
In 1969 human beings took their biggest step from the Earth. An American first walked on the Moon. That was just a beginning. New inventions will some day allow us to do things we have never thought.

My experience of the educational exchange was made interesting both by lectures given by Asian professors and through interacting (互动)with students coming from different countries.
Living in Japan made me realize that getting into a completely different culture is really challenging. For the first time, I was trying to find the right way to interact with them. For example, there are a lot of social (社会的)rules in Japan. Sometimes people have to follow them. One has to find the balance (平衡)between one’s need to become a “normal” part of society and one’s difference.
I have learnt a lot from the educational exchange. I would encourage all students to go through such an experience because it can provide one with a chance to learn the language of another country. And it will allow you not only to interact with local people but also to know better how social rules are different from yours. To join an artistic, cultural or a sports club is-a great way to meet friends and learn more about the country.

( )30. What can we know from the passage?
A. Getting into a different culture is impossible.
B. Learning more about culture is the most important.

He walked into the station cafe. He looked up at the clock there. It was only twenty to twelve. He found a seat and sat down before a large mirror (镜子)oil the wall. Just then, Peter, one of Tom’s workmates came in and sat with Tom. “What time is your bus?” asked Peter. “There is a lot of time yet.” answered Tom. “Well, I’ll get you some more tea then.” They talked while drinking. The Vieira family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking Spanish at home but English. It was because they were living in an English-speaking country then. Now the Vieira children grow up, and they sometimes travel to Spain to visit their friends. But they cannot talk with them. Unluckily, this is common. When people move to new countries, they often leave their own culture and mother language behind. It’s wrong because it’s better to know more than one language.
If you can speak more than one language, you can talk directly (直接地)with more people around the world. People who know only one language must depend on others to help them talk with people in other countries.
What’s more, speaking a second language also helps people to experience other cultures better. If you know a second language, you may know some jokes in other countries. So, knowing more than one language helps you know more about other cultures.
It’s very sad that many people don’t try to learn another language. It’s even worse when people let themselves forget their mother language.

A. Because they lived in America and few people spoke Spanish there.

I was telling my boy Sonny the story of The tortoise and the hare (龟兔赛跑).In the end I said, “Sonny, remember: Be slow and steady (稳定的),and you will win the race (赛跑). Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?” Sonny opened his eyes widely and said, “Do you mean next time when I join the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?’’
I was in a great surprise, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep!” “He must have already wished that,” Sonny said. “Otherwise how could he be so foolish to challenge the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.” “He didn’t have such a wish,” I continued. “He won the race by pushing on steadily.” Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare didn’t happen to fall asleep, the tortoise would never win the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he would never win the race. That’s for sure.” I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They’re just hopeless.

Do you know what the skin (皮肤) is? Skin is the name for the special things on our bodies. It comes in colors such as black, brown, white, yellow and red. However, the color of the skin is not important. All skin has one important job — to keep heat (热) inside our bodies. With this, your skin will be able to help keep you and your body safe for a long time.
Skin has two parts. The first part we can see is called the epidermis (表皮). It is very thin and it is kind of dead skin. The body makes the epidermis all the time. People lose about 20kg of dead skin in their lives.
The inside part of skin is called the dermis (真皮).The skin in this part is living. The dermis is very important because it makes new skin for the epidermis. At the same time, the dermis has lots of small glands (腺体). These glands are important to us because they can make some useful things to help to keep our skin soft. Also, the dermis is important because it lets the body lose some of its heat. In this way, the body does not get too hot.
So next time you must look after your skin because it helps you a lot.

Our school will hold an English Week. We can communicate with others about the English learning methods there. What’s more, we’re sure they will help you learn English more easily and with more fun!
♦ Become interested
Find something interesting about your English study. Why not watch your favorite English films? You can also read the lyrics (歌词)of pop songs, or check out celebrity sites (名人网站)to learn more about your favorite basketball or football players.
♦ Don’t study for too long
Studying 15 minutes each day is much better than studying 2 hours once a week. Study for more if you don’t feel tired.
♦Learn by reading
Read English texts as often as you can. They could be news, short stories or novels (小说). Choose an interesting text that isn't too difficult for you.
♦ Learn through movies and songs Choose your favorite movie. Have paper and pens ready as you may want to write down some useful words or phrases. Listening to your favorite English songs is another cool way. Read first, and then find out what the song is about. Pick some words or phrases that you’d like to learn. A dictionary may also be useful.

To love, to enjoy and to learn English was the theme(主题) of English Week this year. In order to improve students’ interest in learning English, different activities came out during the week. All our members really did a great job and we tried our best to make it a success. We had Treasure Hunt, Film Shows, Language Games, English Cafe, Book Club, Storyboard, Public Speaking and Book Sharing. All of them were interesting and educational activities.
To improve English in fun ways, this year, we tried another way, the Rap (说唱)Show. Six students took part in the activity of writing raps. Doesn’t it sound great? Their show was amazing! They were just like the famous rappers, rapping and dancing confidently. For me, it was really an amazing experience.
21st May was a great day for the Rap Show. All classes came to the school hall. The activity started with a funny story by our student helpers. The classes then took turns to perform. All of them prepared interesting words. The show by students from 2 Wisdom and 2 Hope was the best.

What is DIY? Why do many people like it? Yang Chen works for a computer business in Beijing. He enjoys his work, but it is not easy for him to relax after work. One day when he saw many toy dogs in a toy shop, he had an idea. “Why not make them by myself?” Then he began to make model planes, model ships and something else. He has great interest in it because it brings him lots of fun and makes his life colourful. So what is DIY? Yes, it is making or creating things on your own, with your own hands. It may take much time, but some people, now known as DIYers — do-it-yourselfers, enjoy doing it very much. They enjoy it because it is fun. And they also say it helps them save money too. What’s more, they think it is a good way to protect the environment. It is a kind of green life. In fact, DIY is not a modem thing in China. Many people remember when it was once a way of life in the past. During the 1960s and 1970s, when there were not enough living things for people to live on, they had to use their own hands to do many things. If you wanted something, you had to do it by yourself.
