In the city of London about 150 years ago, many people started to get very sick. The sickness they had was called “cholera (霍乱)”. The disease frightened Londoners because nobody knew how to stop it. At that time, most doctors thought that people got cholera from breathing in polluted air. They told them to open their windows and breathe in fresh air as much as possible. However, this advice did not seem to work as more and more people got the disease.
John Snow had a different idea. He thought that cholera might spread through the water that people were drinking. Maybe polluted water was making everyone sick. At first, nobody paid much attention to him. So he thought of a plan to test his idea about the polluted water. He went to different neighborhoods in London and tested their water. It was just as he had thought! The neighborhoods with the cleanest water had the fewest sick people. The places with the dirtiest water had the greatest number of sick people. This proved (证明) his idea that cholera was spread through dirty water.
John Snow showed the results of his study to the mayor (市长) of London and the other doctors. They realized that he was right. After that, all over London people stopped drinking water that might be polluted. John Snow may not be as famous as Superman, but he is really a hero.

Most people have heard the story of the lost island of Atlantis (亚特兰蒂斯). But is any part of the story true?
Over two thousand years ago, the Greek writer Plato wrote about Atlantis, an island in the Atlantic Ocean. The people on the island were very rich. They built a big city with many great buildings. At the center of the island, they built a beautiful golden temple. But the people became greedy — they had many things, but they still wanted more. So the gods became angry, and the island was hit by earthquake and very large waves (波浪). Finally, the whole island disappeared into the sea.
Many people think Atlantis is simply a story. The story wants to teach people not to be greedy. Richard Ellis wrote a book about Atlantis in 1999. He said, “There is no support for it.”
However, lots of people still believed in the story. Many explorers looked for Atlantis. In 2004, explorer Robert Sarmast reported finding the remains of a city under the sea near Cyprus. But Sarmast and other scientists later found out the remains under the sea were natural, not man-made.
So is the island real or not? We only know one thing that Atlantis will remain a secret with us for a long time.
25. What can we know from paragraph 2?
A. People on the island didn’t respect the gods.
B. People on the island were not happy with what they already had.

C. He found out the remains were not man-made.
D. Many scientists were interested in the lost island.
27. What does the underlined word simply mean?
A. just B. hardly C. easily D. finally
28. What does the writer probably believe?
A. People have already found the Atlantis.
B. People may still keep on looking for the Atlantis.
C. The Atlantis was not real at all.
D. People have lost interest in finding Atlantis.

The year is 2045. A goal is scored at the football World Cup. Not by a human player, but by a robot. A robot? Is that possible? Many scientists believe it is. In fact, there are already robots that can play football. Of course, today’s robots don’t just play sports. Today’s scientists are working on robots with different kinds of skills. For example, it is very possible that robots will soon help take care of children or the elderly, or do dangerous jobs such as fighting fires.
When people started making robots, they were made to do just easy things, mainly in factories. Since then, however, robots have changed a lot. Early robots were operated by humans. Today’s robots work on their own. Some can only move around a little, like robot cleaners, but others, such as Honda’s ASIMO, can do much more. It can run, climb stairs, dance, and yes, even play football.
Then there are robots made to be like humans. These robots have faces and can show emotions. Such robots can learn new things, and show us how they “feel”. Actroid-DER, a social robot, looks so human. It sometimes makes people feel uncomfortable.
Scientists aren’t just building human-like robots. They are also making robots that look and act like animals.
At NASA, scientists are making a robot snake. They think it’s sometimes better than cars with wheels. These snake-bots can enter holes and move over rough ground. They might one day help scientists look for signs of life on Mars. Other animal robots include the frog-bot, which can jump over objects, and the sticky-bot, which can walk up walls. There’s even a robot called Water Runner that can walk on water.
But can a robot football team ever operate all on their own, or play as well as a human team? Many robot scientists surely think so. Anything is possible. One day, they may even be world champions (冠军)!
32. The passage is mainly about ______.
A. different kinds of robots
B. why people need robots
C. how to make your own robots
D. the history of robot development
33. Which robot is able to show its feelings?
A. ASIMO B. Actroid-DER C. Water Runner D. NASA snake-bot
34. The underlined word They in paragraph 5 refers to ______.
A. cars B. wheels C. snake-bots D. holes
35. Which statement would the writer probably agree with?
A. A frog-bot can do more things than a sticky-bot.
B. Robots should not have to do difficult jobs for humans.
C. One day a robot football team can operate themselves.
D. It is impossible that robots will win a football game.
