a fishermana fishing bata whirlplwaves t escapet survive a strmt flatwild
Example A fisherman is trying t survive a strm.
Yu are ging t read a text adapted frm the shrt stry “A Descent int the Maelström”. Read the fact file first. Then answer the questins.
Fact FileMaelström: a pwerful whirlpl in the sea r cean.Mske-strm: als knwn as Mskstraumen, is a system f tidal whirlpls in the Nrwegian Sea, which is ne f the strngest in the wrld. The term was first intrduced int the English language by Edgar Allan Pe in 1841 thrugh his shrt stry “A Descent int the Maelström”.Edgar Allan Pe (1809-1849) was an American writer, best knwn fr his petry and shrt stries, particularly his mystery tales.
1 What is a “Mske-strm”? It is a system f tidal whirlpls in the Nrwegian Sea.
2 Wh wrte the stry? Edgar Allan Pe wrte the stry.
3 What d yu think will happen in the stry?
Abut three years ag, smething terrible happened t me. That was the day when it tk nly six hurs t break my bdy and sul. Yu think I am a very ld man - but I am nt. It tk less than a single day t change my hair frm black t white.
Read the text. Discuss the questins.
One day, my tw brthers and I were cming back frm the islands where we ften risked ging and gt mre fish than thers. All at nce, the sky was cvered with dark cluds and in less than a minute we were in a terrible strm. A huge wave cvered ur bat and my yunger brther fell int the sea. My elder brther put his muth clse t my ear and cried ut “Mske-strm!” The mment I heard the wrd I became very frightened. I knew what he meant by that ne wrd well enugh.
With the wind and waves, we were ging in the directin f the whirlpl. We were hpeless. Nthing culd save us. I felt sick, as if I was falling frm a muntain tp in a dream. We went rund and rund, nearer and nearer t the hrrible edge f the whirlpl. It may appear strange, but at that mment, when we were n the edge f the whirlpl, I felt calmer than when we were mving twards it. I began t think hw amazing a thing it was t die in such a way, and hw wnderful it was t see the pwer f nature. Suddenly, we went ver the edge. I thught my life was ver. But mment after mment passed, and I was still safe.
The bat was n the inside f the huge whirlpl and we were ging rund in circles at great speed. I saw clearly that there were ther bjects in the whirlpl — trees and barrels. After a while, I became curius abut the whirlpl itself. I then made three imprtant bservatins. The first, the larger the bdies were, the mre rapidly they fell; the secnd, between tw bjects f equal extent, rund bjects fell dwn less rapidly; and the third, between tw bjects f the same size, bjects shaped like a tube fell dwn mre slwly. S I tied myself t a barrel t help me flat. I tried t make my brther understand, but he was t frightened and stayed in the heavy bat. Withut waiting, I jumped int the sea t try and escape.
As yu can see, the reasn why I’m here t tell the stry is that I made the right decisin. Sme time after I left the bat, with my brther in it, it was pulled int the bttm f the whirlpl. Sn after that, the whirlpl became less wild. Then the sky was clear, the wind calmer, and the mn was shining. I was still tied t the barrel and the waves sn carried me t an area where the ther fishermen were. In the end, a bat picked me up. I was very tired. The fishermen were my ld friends, but they were unable t recgnise me. When I tld them my stry, they did nt believe it. Nw I have tld yu, and I cannt expect yu t believe me any mre than the fishermen did.
1 Wh are the main characters in the stry? The main characters are the fisherman and his brthers.
2 Wh is telling the stry? The fisherman is telling the stry.
3 When and where did the stry happen? This stry happened abut three years ag in the sea.
4 What effect did the terrible experience have n the stryteller? It brke his bdy and sul. ( It tk less than a single day t change his hair frm black t white.
Read the stry again. Cmplete the infrmatin in the bxes. Then add the stryteller’s feelings during each situatin.
When we were cming back frm the islands, the sky ___________________________.Then a huge wave ________________ and my yunger brther ________________. My elder brther ___________ “Mske-strm!”
    The stryteller’s feelings:

The bat was n the inside f __________________ and we were ging rund ______________________. After I made three imprtant bservatins, I tied myself t ______________________. I tried t make my brther ________________, but he was _____________________.
Sn afterwards, the whirlpl ________________. The waves sn carried me away and finally a bat _______________.
    the huge whirlpl
    in circles at great speed
a barrel t help me flat
    t frightened t get it
    became less wild
    picked me up
Cmplete the illustratin abut hw the stryteller vercame his fear and struggled t survive frm the whirlpl. Then use the time wrds (when, suddenly, then, finally) t tell the stry.
The bat went in the directin f the whirlpl,
    When the Mske-strm came,
At that mment, when they were n the edge f the whirlpl, he felt calmer than when they were mving twards it. Suddenly, they went ver the edge, he thught his life was ver.
When the bat was n the inside f the huge whirlpl, he became curius abut the whirlpl itself.
Then he became much calmer. He made three bservatins. He tied himself t a barrel t help him flat. Withut waiting, he jumped int the sea t try and escape.
Luckily, he made a right decisin. Sn the whirlpl became less wild. Then the waves carried him t an area where the ther fishermen were. In the end, a bat picked him up. He was very tired and felt relieved.
    he felt frightened.
    he was hpeless.
1 What were the three bservatins the stryteller made? The three bservatins were: the large bjects fell int the whirlpl quicker; and the rund bjects and tube-shaped bjects did nt g int the whirlpl as quickly.
2 Why did the stryteller survive while his elder brther didn’t? The fisherman survived because he was calm in the whirlpl and made clear bservatins. Based n the bservatin, he saved himself by tying himself t a barrel t help him flat and jumped int the sea.
    Grup Wrk Think and share.
4 What lessns have yu learnt frm the stry? Give yur reasns. Frm this stry, we learn that staying calm is very imprtant even when we are in an extremely dangerus situatin. At the same time, we shuld bserve what is happening and try t find ut ways t escape frm the danger.
3 What des the stryteller mean by “it tk nly six hurs t break my bdy and sul”? The Mske-strm lasted six hurs. This brke his bdy as the strm battered him abut. It brke his sul as he lst tw brthers in that time. The terrr f the maelström has had a very negative effect n his mind and bdy, which he desn’t think they will ever recver frm.
5 What is the stry trying t say abut the relatinship between humans and nature? The stry shws the fllwing relatinships between humans and nature:Humans depend n nature.Human pwer is s small cmpared with nature.Humans may be destryed by nature under certain circumstances.
Pair Wrk In English yu get wrds with similar meanings (synnyms) r wrds with ppsite meanings (antnyms). Find mre pairs f synnyms and antnyms in the stry. Discuss why such wrds are used.
