The majrity f Shui peple live in suthwest China’s Guizhu Prvince and sme Shui peple live in the nrthwestern part f the Guangxi Zhuang Autnmus Regin.Their language belngs t the Zhuang-Dng branch f the Chinese-Tibetan language family.At ne time,the Shuis used an ld writing script2 .Sme f their wrds were pictgraphs3 while thers resembled4 Chinese characters written upside dwn.
Althugh sme f these ancient wrds are still used fr special purpses,standard Chinese is used by the Shuis in their daily lives.This ethnic grup takes pride in a treasure huse f clurful art and ral literature,including petry,legends, fairy tales and fables.The flk sngs f Shui peple mstly fall int tw kinds. They sing “grand sngs” while at wrk,but sing “wine sngs” during wedding feasts r funerals.
