Many families keep pets at their house and it isn’t unusual to sleep with them. But when talking about better sleep, people often have some questions. Should they share their bed with a pet? Is it good for them to sleep with a pet?
Scientists have traditional said no because they thought people might not get a good sleep.“Animals may move, make noise and disturb sleep. They may get up, walk on the bed and step on people. All of that activity will lead to poor sleep,” said Dr. Polosky, a director of sleep research.
Besides, if you sleep with a small animal, it’s impossible that in the back of your mind, you’re worried about hurting your pet while sleeping. Even a little bit of anxiety (焦虑) can influence your sleep.
That may be true for many of us, but recent studies have shown that pets in the bedroom could be helpful to some of us. Research in 2017 by the Mayo Clinic’s Center for Sleep Medicine in Phoenix found over half of pet owners allowed their pets to sleep in the bedroom and most of them found their pets did not affect their sleep or that their pets might even be helpful. Another 2021 study showed that sleeping with pets might be good for children as well. Some children thought they would have a sense of safety when sleeping with their pets.
“People with depression (忧郁症) or anxiety may get a lot from having their pets on their bed because the pet can be like a big pillow (枕头) and they may feel that the warm , soft and cute animal can help them relax,” said a sleep specialist.
All in all, many of us still need to think twice about bringing our dogs, cats or pigs into our bedrooms. People can make choices depending on their own conditions.
