To deepen the understanding of the theme of the unit based on the students’ own English learning experiences. To develop a learning and thinking mode of paying close attention to slang words as well as their cultural connotation. To get to know the contents, stylistic features and writing methods. To briefly describe an experience of misunderstanding some certain English expressions.Evaluation objectives:After the class, the students are expected to be able to: Understand the text. Get a general of some slang words. Know more about the differences between English and Chinese.Teaching key and difficult points: Enable the students to understand the text and ask them to compare, analyse and judge the content of the text and deepen the understanding of the theme of the unit. Help the students to develop the students’ logical thinking, critical thinking and creative thinking. Guide the students to develop the students’ cross-cultural awareness.Teaching methods:Task-based Approach; Cooperative LearningTeaching procedures:Step1:Presentation Ask the students to guess the meaning of “big potato”according to the following dialogue.A:You know what, the guy we talked with is a big potato in our company.B:You don’t say. Read the following expressions and guess their meanings.(Activity1, Page20)What’s up?Ring a bellSmall potatoesToilet waterAt sixes and sevensGreen figuresPull up one’s socksSuggested answers:What’s up?--What’s going on?Ring a bell--to sound familiarSmall potatoes--something unimportant or insignificantToilet water--a light perfume that does not have a very strong smellAt sixes and sevens--in a confused, badly-organized, or difficult situationGreen figures--natural ability in growing plantsPull up one’s socks--to make an effort to improve your work or behavior because it is not good enough.Step2:Fast readingAsk the students to read the four posts quickly and get to know where the four writers’“puzzles”lie in while learning English.Yancy---Sophie--Julien--Zheng Xu--Step3:Careful readingAsk the students to read the text quickly and finish Activity3 on Page22.Help them solve their puzzles.Suggested answers:a---Sophie’s post b---Zheng Xu’s post c---Yancy’s post d---Julien’s postStep4: Key and difficult pointsRead the text carefully again and help the students understand and analyse some long sentences.1.Here are some of our favorites,to remind us that some of the English we learn in the classroom is rather different from the English in the outside world!本句中的remind 是“提醒”的意思。其常用结构如下:①remind sb to do sthe.g.Could you please remind me (take) my camera tomorrow morning? ②remind sb of/about sth(译)我忘了提醒他面试的时间。_________________________________________________③另外,remind还有“使想起”的意思。e.g.The picture reminded me of the happy time we spent together.(译)______________________________________________2.People say that the British always play safe with what they eat.本句中play safe with是“ ”的意思。What引导 ,充当句中 的宾语。 3.I knew I had done a good job and was looking forward to getting a positive comment.本句中look forward to 这个短语中的to 是介词,后面跟 。另外,comment 在句中是名词,意思是“ ”。其固定搭配为:make a comment on/upon。comment还可以用作动词,常用搭配为:comment on sb/sth,意思是“对……作出评论;对……发表意见”。 (译)He made an objective comment on the incident.Suggested answers:1.①to take ②I forgot to remind him about/of the time for the interview. ③这张照片让我想起了我们一起度过的美好时光。2.谨慎对待;宾语从句;eat3.n.或v.-ing形式;评论,意见;他对那一事件作出了客观的评论。Step5:Show time Ask four students to play the parts of the four heroes in the text respectively. Finish Activity 4 on Page22. Ask several groups to show their performances.Step6:Class extensionPlay several episodes of “slang words”. Add some more background knowledge and arouse the students’ curiosity of learning slang words, such as: break a leg, get cold feet, and see eye to eye.Step7:Think&Share1.Which post do you find most interesting?Why?2.How would you deal with the situations described in the posts?3.What examples of Internet language are used in the passage?What do they mean?4.Do you know of any Chinese expressions that often cause misunderstandings for people from other countries?Share them with the class.Step8:Summary教学反思:本课文呈现了从另一个角度反映单元主题的课文,语篇类型为论坛专题讨论,是新媒体语篇。课文介绍了四位英语学习者在学习过程中遭遇的困惑与误解;通过对课文的学习,学生能够加深英语多样性,创造性及其丰富文化内涵的理解,增强猜词悟义的能力。培养跨文化意识。
