The Maowusu Desert, once one of the four main deserts in China, is becoming a green land. It is between Shanxi and Inner Mongolia and was known as “Devil’s Land (恶魔之地)” in the past. Many years ago, local people experienced a lot of sand-related disasters. There were strong sandstorms. Just to get out of their houses they had to clear thick sand away from front doors.
From 1959, local people decided to fight back the sand. Since then, they have planted trees to slow down the wind, and worked hard to turn the sandy land into farmland. Yin Yuzhen came to live near the Maowusu Desert after she married her husband in 1985. Once she saw a small tree growing in their yard, and then she decided to protect her family through planting trees.
Yin and her husband bought 600 small trees in the spring of 1986 and planted them around their house. Though she had taken very good care of the trees, only 10 of them were still alive in the following year. Instead of feeling sad, Yin was hopeful. She said it meant that trees could live in this environment. After 30 years of hard work by Yin and her family, the sand world around their house has become an endless green place.
Now 80% of the Maowusu Desert has been changed. Today, there are forests, farmlands, cows and sheep and even highways in the desert.

Have you ever noticed plastic waste everywhere in your community? Dr. Aboubacar Kampo has. He was living in Côte d’Ivoire, a country on the coast of West Africa, where plastic is a big environmental problem, compared with water and air pollution. Côte d’Ivoire’s biggest city, Abidjan, produces more than 300 tons of plastic rubbish a day, and only about 5% is recycled. “How can we turn plastic into something useful?” Kampo wondered.
So Kampo, who works for UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, googled, researched, and then noticed a company in Colombia, a country in South America. Plastic pollution is a problem there, too. Conceptos Plásticos, the Colombian company that Kampo read about online, recycles plastic waste and turns it into big, Lego-like bricks(砖)for building schools and houses.
Next, Kampo went to Colombia to learn about the company in person. He toured schools that were built with its bricks and the factory where the bricks were made. “Conceptos Plásticos gave us a solution.” Kampo said. He thought it could help with more than just the plastic problem. It could also improve children’s education.
According to UNICEF, 1.6 million children in Côte d’Ivoire don’t go to school. One reason is that there aren’t enough classrooms. For kids who do go to school, classrooms are often very crowded. Kids often sit on the floor and can’t stand up because there isn’t room to move around.
In 2018, UNICEF built its first classrooms in Abidjan, using bricks produced in Colombia by Conceptos Plásticos. Right away, the local education improved a lot. People couldn’t believe it at the beginning, that the classrooms were made of plastic. But now all the parents want their children in these classrooms. By the end of 2021 UNICEF had built 528 classrooms in Côte d’Ivoire. The new Conceptos Plásticos factory in Abidjan will soon be producing bricks from rubbish collected in children’s playgrounds and on the beach.
The environmental influence is huge. Kampo says it takes about five and a half tons of plastic and just a few weeks to build a classroom. Unlike traditional building, no cement(水泥)is needed. “It’s just a hammer(锤子)and those bricks.” he added.
21.What is the main problem Côte d’Ivoire faces?
    A.Plastic pollution. B.Water pollution. C.Air pollution.
22.What can we learn about Conceptos Plásticos?
A.It’s a company in West Africa.
    B.It recycles plastic waste online.
C.It offers bricks for building the classrooms in Abidjan.
23.Which of the following best describes the parents about their kids’ future in Paragraph 5?
    A.Doubtful. B.Excited. C.Surprised.
24.How many tons of plastic are needed to build a classroom?
    A.About 5.5 tons. B.Only about 15 tons. C.More than 300 tons.
25.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
    A.Building Green
    B.An introduction to Kampo
    C.Côte d’Ivoire’s Environmental Problem

Climate change has made a great danger to bird habitats (homes of birds). Take Poyang Lake as an example. As an important habitat for the seriously endangered Siberian crane (白鹤), Poyang Lake has experienced unusual rises and falls in recent years.
“In some years, the lake experiences floods (洪水), while in others it experiences a shortage of rainfall. Both of these situations lead to less food in the cranes’ habitat,” Qian Fawen, a leader from the National Bird Center of China told China Daily.
To solve such habitat problems, China has recently named 1,140 places as important living and wintering places, and most of them are located in wetlands. To protect China’s wetlands, a law was also made in 2022 to control human activities at important national wetlands and stop harmful activities. According to the law, people can’t overuse the land or farm too much. What’s more, they can’t pour waste water into the wetlands.
Since these methods have worked well, more birds have been seen wintering in the nation’s wetlands, including some new species (物种). In February, Hunan Province reported that 72 species of waterbirds had spent the past winter at Dongting Lake, including Eurasian cranes (欧亚鹤) which haven’t appeared in the area for five years. The number of spoonbills (篦鹭), another endangered species has increased from 300 in the 1980s to more than 5,000 at present, according to the report of the government. All of these cases show a hopeful future.
26.What is the influence of climate change on Poyang Lake?
A.Poyang Lake has become warmer and warmer.
B.Poyang Lake has experienced many rises and falls.
C.Poyang Lake has been a great place for Siberian cranes.
27.What does the underlined word “shortage” mean in Chinese?
    A.缺少 B.充足 C.跌落
28.How does Chinese government protect wetlands?
A.By naming 1,140 places as important homes.
B.By making a law to ask people to protect wetlands.
C.By giving a report in China Daily to call on people.
29.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.There are very rich foods for birds in Dongting Lake.
B.The future of the endangered animals becomes hopeful.
C.Dongting Lake’s environment is better than Poyang Lake’s.
30.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Saving Birds’ Habitats B.Making Friends with Birds C.The Way to Protect the Earth
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics was a great success. China has kept the promise to hold a green Olympics. Many green actions made it possible, like providing environmentally friendly smart beds, using new energy cars, supporting sporting places with 100% clean energy and reusing rain and snow water.
Take making ice as an example. China didn’t use R507a common material to make ice because it isn’t friendly enough to the environment. Through 18 months’ hard work, China independently developed the CO₂ direct cooling technology.
A net of tubes runs under the ice. High-pressure liquid (液态) CO₂ goes through them to create heat exchange. The CO₂ evaporates (蒸发) under the ice surface. The evaporation takes in heat and turns water on the surface into ice. And the CO₂ goes into another circle. This technology helps to make ice better and faster. And above all, it is much greener because there’s no new CO₂ produced. Among all the 15 ice sporting places in the Winter Olympics, 7 used the CO₂ direct cooling technology to make ice. As a result, much less pollution was caused.
Beijing did so much more to save energy. Beijing built the new sporting places with green materials. As for the old ones, Beijing used new glass walls to take the place of traditional walls to let more natural light in. 70% of the waste heat was also reused to keep warm and dry. And a large number of new energy cars were used at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is the first to truly achieve carbon neutrality (碳中和), and it has set new standards in green technologies. Some newspapers say China has set an example for the world in environmental protection and green development.
31.How long did it take China to develop the CO2 direct cooling technology?
    A.18 months. B.100 weeks. C.15 days. D.7 years.
    32.The writer writes Para.3 to show ________.
A.why the CO₂ goes into another circle B.how the new ice-making technology helped
C.how sporting places used the new technology D.why the liquid CO₂ runs through the net of tubes
33.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.A New Green Ice-making Technology B.Green Technologies Used in Sports
C.A Shared Future of Green Development D.The Green Beijing Winter Olympics
We celebrate World Earth Day on April 22 each year. It’s a day to do the planet some good. Many people work hard year-round to protect the earth, including some young people. Come and see what they’ve done for our planet.
    Busy bees
There is a special club in North Carolina, the US. Nine kid beekeepers there are learning about bees and how to save them. Nice-year-old Yohsiah Crews is one of them. At first, he was afraid of being stung. “But not now,” he says. His 15-year-old sister is also in the club. “Honeybees are super important,” she says, “because one bee can visit about 2,000 flowers a day, which will help pollinate (对……授粉) a lot of crops. ”

① Green is the color of nature and the symbol of life. For thousands of years, humans have followed the laws of nature to live in harmony (和谐) with nature.
② That has been seen in ancient Chinese houses. Ancient Chinese often built their homes at the foot of the mountain with a river running nearby. The mountains could stop the cold wind from the north and the river provided water for life. Most houses were also built facing south or west so that the rooms were able to get enough sunshine in winter and keep cool in summer.
③ In modern times, humans didn’t follow the laws of nature during fast development. Luckily, it’s never too late to make changes.
④ Green development is the goal of all countries. On April 23, 2016, China signed the Paris Agreement on climate change, giving a strong push to the international efforts against global (全球的) warming.
⑤ Also in China, the government added green development to the country’s work plans. From 1999 to the end of 2018, by carrying out Mother River Protection Operation, China raised 600 million yuan to build over 5,700 green projects. Through international cooperation (合作), over 98.32 million trees were planted across China.
⑥ Denmark is a leading country in wind and solar technologies. This year Denmark has started the “Power-to-X” plan, providing about 1.25 billion kroner (about 1.27 billion yuan) for projects producing hydrogen (氢气).
⑦ Builders across the world are also playing a role in green development. In Chicago, pressed newspaper, recycled glass and plastic are used on buildings. In Bali, the green school is made from bamboo. The school gets its electricity (电) from solar panels (太阳能电池板), water power and a generator that burns farm waste.
⑧ Following the laws of nature is the only way out. A small move in one country may influence the global community as a whole. Let’s join our hands to make the world a better place for now and future.
43.What do we know about the ancient Chinese houses?
A.They were built on the mountains. B.They were built far from rivers.
C.They were built facing south or west. D.They were built to get enough wind.
44.How does the writer develop his idea in Paragraph 7?
A.By explaining the results. B.By raising questions.
C.By comparing differences. D.By giving examples.
45.Which of the following would the writer agree with?
A.Everyone is part of the green development.
B.Green buildings are the future of the world.
C.Green development is just protecting nature.
D.The future of humans depends on technology.
46.Which is the best structure of this passage?
    A. B.
    C. D.

Global warming is a big problem that we have to stop. One of the best things we do is to plant more trees. Trees can take in CO2 in the air and stop global warming. 47
A team of scientists at Boston University has been working with NASA to study Earth’s green vegetation(植被). They used a special NASA camera and found that global leaf area had increased by 5 percent since the early 2000s. 48 That’s about one quarter of the size of the entire Amazon rainforest.
The growth mainly came from China’s forest protection programs. NASA said. For example, since1962, China has been planting trees in Saihanba, Hebei Province. It was once a desert. 49
50 Ant Forest, a feature in Alipay app, gives users points for doing eco-friendly things, such as walking and going paperless in the office. Users can then use these points to water and grow their own virtual(虚拟的) trees. When the virtual trees are big enough, Ant Forest will plant real trees somewhere in the world. 51
A.More than 55 million trees have been planted in this way.
B.The Chinese public has also joined in these activities recently.
C.And China was responsible for 25% of that gain, according to the study.
D.However, people there can produce vegetables without any difficulty now.
E.But now, China has turned the area into the country’s largest man-made forest.
F.According to a news report, China is doing a great job of “greening” the world.

Plastic brings us convenience, and pollution as well. 52 It’s in our food and drinks, in the clothes we wear and even in the air we breathe.
Some very tiny pieces of plastic are called microplastics ( 微塑料). The largest microplastics can be directly seen. 53 What should we do then?
54 Any time plastic boxes are heated, microplastics can get into your food. If you can’t avoid using plastic boxes, try not to heat food in them.
Use a glass or metal cup instead of a plastic one. Researchers have found that bottled water has more microplastics than tap water. 55 So if you like drinking coffee, hot milk or other hot drinks, remember to use a glass or metal cup.
Since plastic is everywhere, researchers suggest that we should be careful with possible microplastics in life. They may be from baby toys, pens, and even phones we use every day. 56
    A.What’s worse, it’s everywhere.
B.Avoid heating food in plastic boxes.
C.Use plastic products widely in our daily life.
D.Also, the heat of your drinks will encourage microplastics to get into your drinks.
E.All in all, we should use plastic products properly.
F.But many of them are small enough to be around us without being seen.

On March 4th, after 10 years of difficult talks, nearly 200 countries agreed to a new UN agreement—the High Seas Treaty (《公海保护协议》). It is the first of its kind in 40 years. 57
Oceans cover about 71% of the earth’s surface, and are home to all kinds of animals and plants. Healthy oceans play a very important role in a healthy planet. 58 Overfishing (过度捕捞) has had terrible influence on many kinds of fish and other animals. Pollution has caused serious damage (破坏) in many areas.
In 1982, one UN sea agreement described the “high seas”—the parts of the oceans that aren’t controlled by any country. 59 The high seas cover about 2/3 of the ocean. But now only 1.2% of these areas are protected. 60 It also requires that research should first be done to see what influence human’s activities might have on the ocean environment.
During the past 10 years, the talks were held time and time again. 61 For example, there are disagreements about how much to control fishing or pollution. Now the agreement has a long way to go, which must be officially accepted at a UN meeting and be supported by enough countries before it works.
A.But the oceans are in trouble.
B.And it’s a great achievement in protecting the world’s oceans.
C.The agreement was finally reached after difficult discussions.
D.So all countries have the right (权利) to fish and send ships there.
E.That is because different countries have their own different ideas.
F.The new agreement sets a goal to turn 30% of the high seas into protected areas.

Today pollution has become a serious problem all around the world. 62 the environment, many people are trying to find new and creative ways to stop pollution. Among them, Canadian Robert Bezeau is 63 . He has built 64 world’s first “Plastic Bottle Village” on the island of Bocas del Toro Panama.
In 2009, Robert moved to Panama from Canada. Three years 65 , he started a recycling program and a great number of plastic bottles were collected. He wanted to reuse the plastic bottles in a new way. So he went to the island 66 Bocas del Toro, beginning to create a village out of plastic bottles. Just like his slogan (口号) suggests, “Drink it and build it”, the “Plastic Bottle Village” project aims at bringing the used plastic bottles back to life by using 67 in buildings, reducing plastic waste in a “beautiful” way.
The bottle serves as the walls of every building, and it 68 about 14,000 plastic bottles to build a 100-square-meter house. Robert said, “You live normally inside. It’s very cool in temperature and you will feel there is no need for air conditioners. You will feel 69 better in your heart knowing you are changing the world without changing the earth.”
One home at a time. Robert is also planning to go to 70 countries to teach people how to build with plastic bottles.

    七、阅读填表
    阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,完成表格中所缺的信息。每空一词。

Our world is in danger. We must do something to protect the environment. What are the main problems we face?
    The greenhouse effect
When we burn fuels such as petrol and coal, a gas called CO2 is produced. Too much of this gas pollutes atmosphere, and causes it to keep in too much heat. As a result of the greenhouse effect, the earth’s temperature is increasing. This causes sea level to go up, and in the future may cause cities to disappear.
    Cutting down forests
Every year, we destroy nature by cutting down huge areas of forests. This makes the greenhouse effect worse because trees take in CO2 and give out O2. Cutting down trees also destroys the homes of the animals that live in our forests, and causes the surface of the soil to be easily destroyed by rain. This can result in floods and even more damage to the environment.
    Bad habits
Many of our habits cause pollution. People often use things once and then throw them away, or leave them on the ground as liter. This creates tons of rubbish and pollutes our land and seas.
In order to protect the environment, we need to take proper action. Chinese government has made laws and rules about dealing with the waste. We are getting serious about our bad habits now. We should only buy and use products friendly to the environment. We should also recycle as many things as possible. To reduce air pollution, we can take the bus or subway instead of driving.
If we just learn to live in new and different ways, we can make a difference.
