Ricochet, San Diego’s favourite surfing therapy (治疗) dog, has caught her final wave. The 15-year-old golden retriever — a pioneer of canine-assisted (犬只辅助的) surf therapy who helped countless veterans (老兵) and kids — died on Friday, owner Judy Fridono said Saturday.
Ricochet was raised to be a service dog, but the energetic pup was more fond of chasing birds than assisting with household chores. In 2009, the dog found her career. That was the year Ricochet got on a surfboard with local quadriplegic (四肢瘫痪的) surfer Patrick Ivison. A viral video of the encounter got more than 6 million views on YouTube. “That day she hopped on the board with Patrick, she was reborn,” Fridono said in a 2012 interview.
Throughout her life, the beloved dog touched the lives of kids with special needs, wounded service members and families of fallen veterans. Ricochet was known as an affectionate companion and a shameless belly-rub beggar and had a feeling for people who needed a hug.
Notably, the furry do-gooder helped raise $ 1 million for charity and the donation of more than 1 million bowls of food for homeless animals.
Her work brought numerous awards, media attention and a loyal fan base on social media. The dog had more than 141,000 followers on Instagram and more than 270,000 on Facebook.
Ricochet’s legacy (遗产) will live on through the sponsorship of Jose Martinez, an Army veteran and parasurfer, and through donations to adaptive surfing organizations. “People believe in Ricochet’s mission… she didn’t do it alone,” Fridon o said. “Her supporters are an extension of her legacy and her roots in helping others heal through dog intervention and therapy. Now that she’s gone, I don’t want people to be sad. I want them to celebrate and continue supporting what she started.”
24.What was Ricochet’s career?

A.In a diary. B.In a textbook.
C.In a newspaper. D.In a guidebook.
Earthquake forecasting is one of the most ancient skills known to mankind. From ancient Greece to the present day, countless scientists have tried to develop tools to predict earthquakes. Their attempts usually focused on searching for reliable evidences of coming quakes.
However, there are many reasons why predicting quakes is so hard. “We don’t understand some basic physics of earthquakes,” said Egill, a research professor at the California Institute of Technology. Scientists have also attempted to create mathematical models of movement, but precisely predicting would require great mapping and analysis of the Earth’s crust. Other challenges include a lack of data on the early warning signs, given that these warning signs are not yet entirely understood. Actually, real earthquake prediction is very similar to the diagnosis of potential human illnesses based on observing and analyzing each patient’s signs and symptoms. As it turns out, quake prediction is extremely difficult.
Many sources show that earthquake forecasting was a recognized science in ancient Greece. Ancient Greeks lived very close to nature and were able to detect unusual phenomena and forecast earthquakes. The first known forecast was made by Pherecydes of Syros about 2500 years ago: he made it as he scooped water from a well and noticed that usually very clean water had suddenly become muddy. Indeed, an earthquake occurred two days later, making Pherecydes famous. Nowadays, seismic and remote-sensing methods are considered to have the greatest potential in terms of solving the earthquake prediction problem.
Currently, Terra Seismic can identify a forthcoming earthquake with a high level of confidence. Generally, Terra Seismic does not predict a quake if the earthquake’s epicenter is located beyond a depth of 40 km. Fortunately, such quakes are almost always harmless, since quake’s energy reduces before reaching the Earth’s surface. “Scientists have tried every possible method to try to predict earthquakes,” Bruneau said. “Nobody has been able to crack it and make a believable prediction.”
28.What do we know about earthquake forecasting?
A.Scientists have been passionate about accurately predicting earthquakes.
B.As long as enough data is collected, earthquakes can be predicted.
C.Mathematical models of motion can simulate and predict earthquakes.
D.Scientists have not yet fully studied the structure of earthquakes.
29.How did Pherecydes successfully predict earthquakes?
A.By seismic and remote-sensing methods.
B.By observing unusual natural phenomena.
C.By living in seismic zones throughout the year.
D.By looking into data on the early warning signs.
30.What was Bruneau’s opinion about the current methods of earthquake prediction?
A.He strongly believed the Terra Seismic can solve the difficult problem.
B.He was sure that humans could accurately predict earthquakes in the future.
C.He considered it harmless to humans for an earthquake deeper than 40km.
D.He thought that scientists had no reliable method to predict earthquakes.
31.Which question does this article focus on?
A.Why do humans predict earthquakes?
B.How to protect oneself during an earthquake?
C.What methods can be used to forecast earthquakes?
D.When to achieve accurate earthquake forecasting?
Video has become an increasingly popular educational tool. As a storytelling medium, video is in many ways superior to text or lecture-based instruction, but it is not without disadvantages. It can be difficult to search or find already seen content for review. And note-taking is especially laborious (费力的).
Hari Subramonyam, a research professor in the Stanford Graduate School of Education, and two workmates, have used computer vision and natural language processing tools to develop VideoSticker a note-taking application specifically for video-based learning.
VideoSticker combines video, transcripts (文本), and a powerful visual and textual note-taking application. Better yet using AI, VideoSticker can automatically identify and trim (修剪) objects out of the video and place them in the note-taking area. VideoSticker then deals with the transcripts using tools like those behind popular voice recognition and chatbots to pull key text into the note-taking area, combining it with the relevant imagery.
It all adds up to a big head start on manual (手工的) note-taking and allows students to focus on the important content to improve comprehension and recall.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the VideoSticker approach, the researchers conducted a test with 10 undergraduate students. Each completed a 75-to-90-minute note-taking session. They then reported their experiences. All participants noted VideoSticker’s flexibility in note-taking. “Trimming the objects and controlling them in the video viewing panel is cool,” notes one participant.
“Overall, I think VideoSticker is a great example of AI making a good combination with the learning context to balance manual note-taking with the experience of learning that is so important to real comprehension”, Subramonyam says. “As video becomes more commonplace in the classroom, as it is sure to in coming years, a tool like this will be very much needed. Going forward, my team plans to partner with educators to evaluate VideoSticker in real-world learning contexts and make the tool commercially available.”
32.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.What VideoSticker is about.
B.Where VideoSticker can be applied.
C.Why VideoSticker was developed.
D.How VideoSticker works.
33.What was the participants’ attitude to VideoSticker?
A.Unclear. B.Doubtful. C.Disapproving. D.Favorable.
34.What will Subramonyam’s team do next?
A.Create more learning tools.
B.Put VideoSticker on the market.
C.Improve real-world learning contexts.
D.Allow AI to change manual note-taking.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Video-based learning gains popularity due to VideoSticker.
B.Note-taking applications begin to attract more AI developers.
C.VideoSticker helps students take notes from video lessons.
D.Educators consider VideoSticker as an essential teaching tool.

How to develop personal accountability
Personal accountability means taking responsibility for your life. It plays a significant role in the fulfillment you get from your personal and professional life. 36 These five strategies will help you start being accountable today.
Be self-aware.
Whenever you want to make excuses for your behavior, step back and evaluate your emotions from a sensible place. Whether at work or in your personal life, be willing to step up and take responsibility, even if you are afraid of what will happen if things go wrong.
Turn your “shoulds” into “musts”.
37 Start with turning your “shoulds” into “musts.” Our lives are filled with things we “should” do. To turn these goals into “musts,” connect them to your purpose in life. Understand that they are essential to your happiness. Make a promise to yourself to live with no regrets.
Set goals.
Setting goals (even small ones) and achieving them allows you to demonstrate that you can hold yourself accountable. 38
Watch your words.
Everyone has an inner monolog (独白) that affects the way we interact with the world. That little voice turns into the behaviors we engage in and the words we choose to speak. 39 Next time something goes wrong notice how you react.
40
Ask a friend to hold you accountable for certain goals; this can be especially helpful if you share a common goal. For example if you’re both training to run a race set up check-ins to see how the other is doing.
A.Transform your mindset.
B.Conduct emotional evaluation.
C.Have an accountability partner.
D.However, many people struggle with it.
E.When you achieve your goals, take time to celebrate in your own way.
F.Change your thoughts and think about how to improve yourself.
G.The ability to stop any negative self-talk is vital to positively engaging with others.

It was 11 p.m. when Alex Conrad saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge. She was standing by the railing, peering down at the rushing Chippewa River below. At her feet was what appeared to be a backpack.
Maybe she’s fishing, Conrad, then 20, thought as he continued driving his car to his home a short distance away. His friend’s car had broken down, so Conrad was making a quick pit stop to grab some tools before heading out to help.
Tools in hand, he climbed into his car. Instead of taking a shortcut, though, he chose to head back over the bridge. Something about that woman didn’t sit right. Why would she be fishing this late at night— in May, when it’s still cold in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin?
As he crossed the quarter-mile-long bridge, Conrad saw the woman standing in the same spot. He pulled a U-turn and parked on a zebra crossing some 20 feet away with the hazards lights flashing, blocking one of the four lanes. In case there was trouble, he hoped another driver would take note and help.
He stepped out of his car and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s,dressed in pants and a heavy coat. What he’d thought was a backpack was in fact rope pooled by her feet. One end was tied to a bridge post. The other, around her neck.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Conrad called out. He pretended not to see the rope although he knew exactly what was going on.
She spoke unwillingly, but he kept probing(追问), eventually pulling from her that she was going through a particularly rough difficulty. She was jobs, not doing well in school—in short, life wasn’t working out as she’d hoped.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Para 1:
“Not everything goes as planned,” agreed Conrad.

Davyon Johnson, 11, from Muskogee, doesn’t understand what all the attention is about. In his words, he just “did the right thing”. And while that is true, saving not just one, but two people on the same day is kind of a really big deal.
First off, Davyon was at school and heard a boy say “I’m choking...” A 7th grader called Bill was choking on a water bottle cap. Having learned some first-aid techniques from a video, Davyon took immediate action, and after 3 tries, was able to get the bottle cap to pop out of the boy’s throat.
Then, later the same day, he and his mom were driving home when they saw smoke coming from a house. He asked his mom to stop and he approached the house. He found an elderly woman having trouble leaving the burning house. Davyon stopped and helped her safely exit the house. The fire department soon arrived to take over.
Davyon’s amazing actions caught the attention of The Muskogee Police Department who presented him with a certificate naming him an honorary member of their force.
When he is not saving people, Davyon enjoys wrestling, basketball and RC cars.
Davyon is a great example of the young person. Check out this video and then learn how you can prepare to help others just like Davyon.

66.Dear Jim,
As is mentioned in your previous letter, some unique courses in my school are really appealing. I am writing to inform you of the upcoming one to be held next week and sincerely invite you to participate in it.
To strengthen the awareness of labour, a special course to experience labor work will be a must for every single student in our school. Doing varieties of campus work, we will not be sitting in the classroom, learning academic subjects but serving as school gate keepers, dustmen, librarians and so on. We are expected to get a better understanding of labor work through it and to accomplish our deserved share at homes. What I am convinced is that you will never feel down taking part in it. I can’t wait to explore it with you and am really looking forward to your participation.
Best wishes for you.
Yours
Li Hua

67.“Not everything goes as planned,” agreed Conrad. He started talking about the ups and downs he’d faced in his life. As he talked, he inched closer. Conrad was a quiet guy, but now he found enough topics of conversation to keep the woman engaged and even laughing. She grew comfortable enough to let him get within a few feet of her. Then suddenly without warning, she climbed onto the railing. Conrad reached for her. He threw his arms around her, hauling her down off the railing. She grabbed the railing, saying, “I’m not worth it.” Heart pounding, Conrad said, “I refuse to give up.”(97words)
Just then, bright lights appeared and it was the police. Someone had reported Conrad’s car for being parked on the bridge—just as he’d hoped. Two officers raced over and took hold of the woman, and soon, more police arrived and the woman was taken to safety, and then to a hospital for observation. Everyone present sighed in great relief. What was unusual in the whole episode was what Alex Conrad did. One officer was so impressed by Conrad’s actions that he suggested he consider a career as a police negotiator. Conrad just smiled, making no response.(87 words)
