    IV.
    A
"Funny", a made-in-China emoji, seems to have recently moved beyond China. Now, it is more than an emoji, but a cultural expansion.
    ● Reaching Global Markets
A series of "funny" emoji-based bolsters (抱枕) have attracted the attention of Japanese customers. Even if one bolster is more than three times as expensive as in China, it doesn't kill their desires to buy it. One Japanese customer Miki said, "They are just so cute and I bought three bolsters at one time for my family. And every time I see them, my mood just brightens suddenly."
A Japanese netizen Kiro Kara said, "I think the emoji implies very complicated meanings. My dad will send it when he doesn't agree with someone but he has to say something and behave politely."
    ● Addition to Domestic Social Media
Compared with Japanese impressions of the "funny" emoji, Chinese netizens prefer to use emoji to tease one another on social media.
One commonly seen online comment is, "We strongly suggest stopping the usage of the emoji. Because every time other people send me the emoji, I feel very uncomfortable and consider myself as a fool."
Regarded as the most popular emoji, the "funny" emoji has received much attention since its release in 2013. In fact, the "funny" emoji is the updated version of its original one; "funny" has a smiley mouth, two eyebrows and a naughty look. All these characteristics present users a sense of satire (讽刺).
    ● In Everyday Use Abroad
It's not the first time the Chinese emoji takes the world stage. Earlier this year, one emoji from the Chinese basketball celebrity Yao Ming has been spread through the Middle East region. In a city in southern Egypt, Yao's smiling emoji has appeared frequently in local traffic signs to remind people the road ahead is one-way. Many locals do not know Yao Ming but are familiar with his emoji and nickname "Chinese Funny Face".
As a new online language, emojis have become a necessary part of people's daily life, helping people express their views in a more vivid and precise way. Also, it can help foreigners learn about Chinese culture. But how to properly use "the fifth innovation in China" without hurting others and turn them into commercial advantages still need answers.

A picture speaks a thousand words. And with over a thousand emoji pictures to represent our words, who needs to speak or write any more? According to Professor Vyv Evans of Bangor University, emoji is the UK's fastest-growing language in history. These little electronic pictures started life in Japanese mobile phones in the 1990s and are now hugely popular. They have inspired fashion, like the real-life dress copied from the dancing lady emoji, and are even recognized as art! In New York's Museum of Modern Art you can now see the first set of the 176 original emojis.
Why do we love them so much? They allow us to personalize text and have fun as we express ourselves, make people laugh and be creative in how we use them. UK teenagers also told us they really appreciated the fact that emojis are quick and easy.
People have their favourite emojis. In the UK, the most used emojis are ' face with tears ofjoy', ' face blowing a kiss' and 'Iove heart'. Maybe (with emojis at least) the British are more fun and romantic than people think! Companies such as McDonalds have also tried to use people's love of emojis to make advertisement. They used a series of emojis to tell a story of a disappointing day given a happy ending by a visit to McDonalds. Unluckily for McDonalds, most people added the vomiting(呕吐) emoji to the blank space after the story.
What is the future of emoji? Is emoji developing so rapidly that it will soon compete with English as a global language? Or is technology changing so fast that emoji will soon be forgotten when the next big thing comes along? It is hard to say and even technology and language experts are divided on the subject.

Emoji might not be your first choice of communication in a disaster, but researchers feel they could make a difference during emergencies, where every second counts. Now, the Emoji-quake campaign is lobbying for an earthquake emoji to be added to the Unicode set — the standard group of icons available on digital devices worldwide. The campaign aims to find an earthquake-appropriate design to be submitted to Unicode.
"Approximately up to one third of the world's population are exposed to earthquakes," explains University of Southampton seismologist (地震学家) Dr. Stephen Hicks, a founder of the campaign. "So we really want to be able to communicate to all of those regions, all of those different languages, and an emoji is an amazing way of doing that."
Unlike many other weather and climate related events, where longer warning times or visible signs are available, earthquakes move incredibly quickly and are difficult  to measure while they are still occurring. Populations in areas like Japan and Mexico are dependent on earthquake early warning technology, which issues an alert on digital devices and broadcast media. "You may have seconds to get under a table or to protect yourself," explains Dr. Hicks. "That can be life saving in many cases. Naturally you don't want too much wording in the warning message."
Pictographs (象形文字) and other visuals like emoji have a track record of being faster and easier to understand than written information. Dr. Sara McBride, a communications specialist, who is also part of the campaign, told BBC News, "Emoji can cross the boundaries of written languages, helping communicate valuable information to people who may struggle to read a certain language."
The potential usefulness of emoji in emergencies could extend well beyond earthquakes. A team of designers also came up with emerji—an entire set of emoji dedicated to climate and environmental events.
(1)According to the passage, why did the campaign choose earthquakes as their target?
A.Because earthquakes threaten many people in different regions.
B.Because earthquakes are the easiest to be expressed by an emoji.
C.Because earthquakes are not difficult to measure while occurring.
D.Because earthquakes are the most destructive disasters in the world.
(2)Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase "lobby for" in the first paragraph?
    A.Hope for. B.Enter for. C.Appeal for. D.Run for.
(3)What can we infer from Dr. Sara McBride's words about emoji?
A.Emoji benefits people with reading disability a lot.
B.Emoji is being used to convey valuable information.
C.Emoji can cross the boundaries of written languages.
D.Emoji is a universal language and helpful tool in communication.
(4)The best title of the passage should be ___________________.
A.Could an emoji save our life?
B.What can emoji do in our life?
C.How is emoji changing our life?

O'Plerou Grebet is a 22-year-old graphic design student in Côte d'Ivoire, Africa. Everywhere he looks, he sees signs of Western influence — from the glass skyscrapers and malls lining the streets in his home city to the way his fellows speak and dress. "We are living like we're Western people," he says. That even applies to the keyboard culture — when his friends text using the messaging apps, they especially love to use the "tears of joy" face emoji So he used his design skills to create digital stickers that show what he thinks is missing: symbols of history, life and culture in Côte d'Ivoire and neighboring countries.
In 2018, he released a free pack of over 360 stickers in a mobile app called "Zouzoukwa", which means "image" in the local Bété language. Available on Android and iOS, it now has over 120,000 downloads. It's more impressive than other emoji apps, with the feature of connecting to the realities of Africans using it." It would make their jokes even livelier," says Grebet. The stickers include traditional masks, African instruments like the djembe drum and people dressed in a variety of prints and clothing that can reflect local tradition.
Some of his favorite designs are a series of facial expressions commonly used in his area, but not available as standardized emojis. There's a woman with lips pursed, giving some serious side-eye—a sign you can use when your friend keeps you waiting long for no reason. It's common in Côte d'Ivoire and also translates across cultures, Grebet says.
The next step, Grebet says, is to try and get some of his designs into the official emoji set, where they'd reach more than 2 billion people worldwide, as usable ones on smartphones everywhere. Grebet also plans to keep traveling and expanding his experiences and his sticker pack. His designs so far are drawn from his experience and research into a few African countries.
(1)How does Grebet find their local culture according to paragraph 1?
A.It's very similar to Western culture.
B.It's absent in many aspects of their life.
C.It's full of inspirational ideas and symbols.
D.It's influential in local people's lifestyle.
(2)What's Zouzoukwa's advantage over other emoji apps?
A.It provides a better source of jokes.
B.It's designed based on daily items.
C.It's related more closely to the locals.
D.It applies to both Android and iOS.
(3)Which feeling does the woman emoji mentioned in paragraph 3 convey?
    A.Curiosity. B.Sorrow. C.Annoyance. D.Disappointment.
(4)What will Grebet probably do next?
A.Be on tour to advocate his designs.
    B.Create an official emoji set.
    C.Research into more African countries.
    D.Standardize some of his emojis.
    A. How do they affect us?

    D. The invention of emojis changed that!
    E. This means that emojis have created a new brain pattern in us.
    F. The first emojis appeared on Japanese mobile phones in the 1990s.
    G. A written message is black and white, but an emoji adds emotions to our messages.
When you write a message or an email, you might put a smiling face or other pictures at the end to make the message more fun. These pictures are emojis Later, they were used on Apple's iPhone and Android phones. Now they are everywhere!
        Emoticon or emoji?
Before emojis, there were emoticons, which can be made from the signs you can find on your keyboard, for example: for a smiley. Emoji is a Japanese word which means photograph. e ("picture") + moji ("character").        There are all kinds of emojis, from faces and weather pictures to things in the kitchen and animals.
        What are emojis for?
In English, we have a saying: A picture paints a thousand words. For many people, an emoji is like a punctuation mark, or smiling at someone across the room.        It is like the tone (语气) of voice when we speak on the phone, or gestures used in conversation.

When someone speaks and looks serious, we try to look serious, too, and when someone smiles, we smile as well. This is how we show empathy (共鸣) and make friends.
But when we are online, we can't see the person's face and there is no emotion.        Scientists in Australia have discovered that when we look at a smiley face online, the same parts of the brain start working as when we look at a real smiley face. Our mood changes, and we try to change our face to match the emoji.

根据第二段中的“we really want to be able to communicate to all of those regions, all of those different languages, and an emoji is an amazing way of doing that.”及第三段“That can be life saving in many cases. Naturally you don't want too much wording in the warning message.”
Could an emoji save our life?“一个表情能拯救我们的生命吗?”)
根据第一段中的“‘We are living like we're Western people,’ he says. That even applies to the keyboard culture — when his friends text using the messaging apps, they especially love to use the ‘tears of joy’ face emoji So he used his design skills to create digital stickers that show what he thinks is missing: symbols of history, life and culture in Côte d'Ivoire and neighboring countries.”“我们就像西方人一样生活,”他说。
根据第二段中的“It's more impressive than other emoji apps, with the feature of connecting to the realities of Africans using it. ‘It would make their jokes even livelier,’ says Grebet. The stickers include traditional masks, African instruments like the djembe drum and people dressed in a variety of prints and clothing that can reflect local tradition.”
根据第三段中的“There's a woman with lips pursed, giving some serious side-eye—a sign you can use when your friend keeps you waiting long for no reason.”
根据第三段中的“Some of his favorite designs are a series of facial expressions commonly used in his area, but not available as standardized emojis.”他最喜欢的一些设计是他所在地区常用的一系列面部表情,但不是标准化的表情符号;和最后一段中的“The next step, Grebet says, is to try and get some of his designs into the official emoji set, where they'd reach more than 2 billion people worldwide, as usable ones on smartphones everywhere.”Grebet说,下一步是尝试将他的一些设计融入官方表情包,这些设计将覆盖全球20多亿人,成为各地智能手机上可用的设计。
    V.【答案】 F;B;G;A;D
根据空前“ These pictures are emojis (表情符号). 再根据空后“Later, they were used on Apple's iPhone and Android phones. F.The first emojis appeared on Japanese mobile phones in the 1990s.“第一个表情符号出现在20世纪90年代的日本手机上。”
根据空前“Emoji is a Japanese word which means photograph. e ("picture") + moji ("character"). ”Emoji是一个日语单词,意思是照片,e(“图片”)+moji(“性格”)。”再根据空后“There are all kinds of emojis, from faces and weather pictures to things in the kitchen and animals.” Emojis are real pictures.“表情符号是真实的图片。”切题。该项中的real pictures与下文的all kinds of emojis, from faces and weather pictures to things in the kitchen and animals相吻合。
根据空后“It is like the tone (语气) of voice when we speak on the phone, or gestures used in conversation.” G.A written message is black and white, but an emoji adds emotions to our messages.“文字信息是黑白的,但表情符号会给我们的信息增添情感。”切题。该项中的an emoji adds emotions to our messages与下文的内容相吻合。
再根据空后‘’When someone speaks and looks serious, we try to look serious, too, and when someone smiles, we smile as well. This is how we show empathy (共鸣) and make friends.“当有人说话和表情严肃时,我们也会努力表现得严肃,当有人微笑时,我们也会微笑。 A. How do they affect us?“它们如何影响我们?”切题。故选A。
根据空前“But when we are online, we can't see the person's face and there is no emotion. 再根据空后“Scientists in Australia have discovered that when we look at a smiley face online, the same parts of the brain start working as when we look at a real smiley face. D.The invention of emojis changed that!“表情符号的发明改变了这一切!”切题。故选D。
    【点评】本题要求在理解细节信息的基础上,着重考查对上下文的理解和推理判断能力。
    VI【答案】 60.D;61.A;62.B;63.C;64.D;65.A;66.B;67.A;68.D;69.C;70.D;71.C;72.C;73.A;74.C;
    【解析】本文是一篇议论文,讲述了大人们对社交媒体上瘾,尤其手机,影响了和孩子们之间的关系,应该尽可能地放下手机,解决对手机上瘾的问题。
    【点评】考查完形填空,本题考点涉及动词,名词,形容词,副词,固定短语等多个知识点的考查,是一篇人生感悟类阅读,要求考生在理解细节信息的基础上,进一步根据上下文的逻辑关系,进行分析推理,从而选出正确答案。

    65.句意:父母的科技成瘾对孩子的行为有负面影响。A. negatively“负面地”;B. eventually“最终地”;C. immediately“立即地”;D. hardly“几乎不”。根据下文说父母有手机瘾,导致家庭沟通下降,故选A。

    67.句意:这导致了家庭内部语言交流的显著下降,甚至导致了母亲鼓励孩子的下降。A. significant“显著的”;B. necessary“必需的”;C. new“新的”;D. special“特别的”。根据上文说负面影响,这里是导致的后果,所以应该是显著的,故选A。
    68.A. hope“希望”;B. fault“错误”;C. change“变化”;D. decline“下降”。根据上文家庭内部语言交流的显著下降,这里也应该是下降,故选D。
    69.句意:人们往往会把注意力从身边的人身上转移到手机上。A. lock“锁定”;B. hide“藏”;C. check“查看”;D. repair“修理”。根据上文说有手机瘾,所以这里应该是用查看手机来代替关注别人,故选C。
    70.句意:不可否认,当我收到来自父母的“我很快就会和你在一起”的短信时,我会很生气。A. upset“不安的”;B. delighted“高兴的”; skeptical“怀疑的”; annoyed“生气的”。因为下文说很快,但一直等到父亲放下手机,所以这里应该是生气的,故选D。
    71.A. root“根源”;B. process“进程”;C. practice“习惯”;D. service“服务”。根据上文说的父母对手机成瘾,再加上本句一直等我父亲放下手机,所以这里习惯更符合语境,故选C。
    72.句意:也许你应该以身作则,考虑一下你花在电话上的时间,以及这如何影响你的孩子和你与他们的关系。A. dream“梦想”;B. nature“自然”;C. example“例子”;D. technology“科技”。根据上文说父母手机成瘾对孩子的影响,这里应该是父母要作为榜样来考虑一下花在电话上的时间,故选C。

    VII. 【答案】 lighted;have occupied;with;expression;is;who;beautifully;they;wider;a
    【解析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了自从在20世纪90年代,日本发明了表情符号后,网络交流就被表情符号代替了。表情符号被看作是一种新的表达方式,是年轻人的独特之处。人们开始怀疑它是否已经在我们的网上交流中占的比重过大。
    (1)考查非谓语动词。Light的逻辑主语是candles,它们之间是被动关系,用过去分词作定语,故填lighted。
Since they were invented in the 1990s in Japan,可知用现在完成时,故填have occupied。
这里使用了倒装,主语是the rise of young people,是单数,故填is。
welcome new technology and inventions.
指代前面出现的young people,故填they。
根据than written words.
as a result固定短语,“结果”,故填a。
VIII..【答案】 ①happen → happened  ②that → where  ③surprised →surprise  ④were → was  ⑤practice前面加to  ⑥But → So  ⑦practice → practicing  ⑧去掉learn后面的from  ⑨communication → communicate  ⑩free → freely
故that改为where。
故were改为was 。
tell sb to do sth,固定短语,“告诉某人做某事”,故在practice前面加to。
故But改为So 。
spend time (in) doing固定短语,“花时间做某事” 。

Hardware facilities have been upgraded, including new blackboards and computers in the classrooms. It is said that the library will seat more students and the librarians have restocked the library shelves with large quantities of new books.
