As a kid, I read a story of a bird. It described a male bird which takes a lot of pain to build a house and the female bird takes care of the baby in it. When the baby bird learns to fly, the whole family flies off to a different place leaving behind the beautiful nest for other birds to grow their family in it. It made me confused(困惑的): How could they so easily give up their house built with so much effort?
One night, I got this dream. I was walking on the endless road with beautiful trees on the either side. Attracted by the greenery, I went on, then I saw a wonderful house. I explored the house. There was a sloping(斜的) roof which matched with the greenery around; the large central open yard reminded me of the activities that might have taken place there which felt lively even now. The small water body that kept the house cool added to the beauty of the house — of course, it was all dried up now. Such liveliness turns the house into a home. People say “THE HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS”, and now I felt it and was attracted deeply.
When I woke up from the dream, I was clear about everything. I realized what message my dream wanted to convey(传递) me. And years later, when I chose my career, I thought of the story of the bird and my dream, then I was sure what to do. I decided to choose architecture as my career. I wanted to do the same thing that the male bird in the story did, to take pain in building a beautiful house and let others stay in it. My dream comes true and the happiness that I gain now from this career is great.

February 14th, Valentine’s Day(情人节), is a complicated but interesting day. First of all, Valentine’s Day is not a holiday from work. No one gets a day off. In many countries it is observed by sending cards to your friends and candy or flowers to your husband or wife if you’re married, or to your boyfriend or girlfriend if you’re not married. In Japan, some girls even give their fathers chocolates.
Why is this holiday for people in love called Valentine’s Day?
One explanation comes from a Christian man whose name was something like “Valentine”. He lived at a time when the Roman Emperor refused to allow any Roman soldiers to get married for any reason. Many couples came to Valentine to be married. So he would secretly marry them in a Christian ceremony. He was discovered and put in prison by the Emperor. One tradition says that he wrote notes to his friends by marking on leaves and then throwing them out of the window of his prison. The leaves were shaped like a heart. Valentine was killed on February 14th and Valentine’s Day recalls his tragic death.
On Valentine’s Day, American elementary school children make or buy Valentine cards, write the name of a classmate on them, and take them to school and put them in a special Valentine’s Day box. And then on that day the box is opened, the cards are taken out and given out.

Some countries have a day to celebrate Father’s Day. And the US is one of them. On that day all fathers across the country will get presents, have delicious dinners or enjoy something special.
How did the holiday begin? It isn’t very clear. Some say it began with a church service (礼拜) in West Virginia in 1908, and others say the idea of Father’s Day came from Dodd in Spokane, Washington in 1909.
Mrs. Dodd’s mother died young, and her father raised (抚养) six children by himself. Mrs. Dodd thought she had a great father. So she had the idea of having a church service for those great fathers on June 5,1908, her father’s birthday. The date was too soon for the ministers to prepare the service. So they finally made it on June 19th, 1910. From then on, the State of Washington celebrated Father’s Day on the third Sunday in June. Then in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson announced the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day across America.
Now on Father’s Day when children can’t visit their fathers or take them out to dinner, they usually send a greeting card. Traditionally, fathers prefer (更喜欢) greeting cards full of funny ideas. We celebrated Earth Day in my city last week. The idea of this special day began in the 1960 when life was very different. Few people talked, or even thought, about the environment. Most people had no idea how dirty our air and water were. This worried Gaylord Nelson, who was a senator (参议员) in the US government, and he had an idea. If people around the world knew the Earth was in danger, they might work harder to save it, so he just needed to get their attention (注意). The first Earth Day was just in the United States, but it led to events every year all around the world on April 22 or the nearest weekend depending on where you are.
In my city, last Saturday afternoon lots of people rode their bikes from the park, around the town together and back to the park, spending as much time as they possibly could, so that the cars had to wait. Then we talked to all the drivers in cars which just had one person in them, to explain how wasteful that is and how much pollution it causes. The idea was to make people think about how much they use their cars. In other places, people collected plastic bags for a week and then made a pile of them in the town square. You can do anything as long as it makes people of all ages come together for a few hours and talk about the environment. Last year we had a big music event for young people. Some people said it was a waste of time, but there was information for people to read and announcements (公告) between the bands about how to help protect the environment.

The most important holiday in spring, especially for Christians, is Easter. This Christian holiday is not on the same date every year, but it's always on a Sunday. It can be any Sunday between March 22 and April 25. Many people celebrate Easter by buying new clothes. Children celebrate by hunting for colored eggs that their parents have hidden around the house. People also give Easter baskets filled with candy and other goodies to one another to celebrate the day.
But the holiday is more than new clothes and good things to eat. On Easter, many people go to church to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection(复活)from the dead. Most people color Easter eggs. Some people hide them. Others just eat them. But no matter what one does with Easter eggs, they are an important Easter tradition throughout the Western world.
People from many different cultures celebrate Easter. In both America and Belgium, children look for Easter eggs hidden on lawns and in bushes. In America, children believe the eggs are hidden by the Easter bunny(兔子). But in Belgium, the hidden eggs are supposed to have fallen from church bells. In Bulgaria(保加利亚),red Easter eggs are lucky in churches. Bulgarian families also hit these Easter eggs together to see whose is the strongest. The winner looks forward to good fortune that year. Still dozens of other Easter traditions exist. In parts of Austria, for example, children sing from door to door and are rewarded with colorful eggs.

Her uncle gave her a bag of bottle caps(瓶盖), and Maddie started to work. She made a bottle cap more beautiful with a picture of Albert Einstein and then put it on her locker. Her friends loved it and asked her to make more for them. Later she took 50 to a local store. To her surprise, it sold all of them in less than two hours.
Maddie then had the idea to make the bottle caps into fun necklaces. In 2010, she even decided to use 300 dollars of her own money to start a company. She named it M3 Girl Designs. Now it sells about 50000 bottle cap necklaces each month. They can be found at different stores across the US, Canada and the UK.

During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to take part in the celebration ceremony, which came to be called “Sweetest Day”. Then the idea of spreading cheer to the underprivileged was spread to everyone. And soon the idea was spread to other cities all over the country.
