A magnifying glass
Reth liked to study ants. He could sit for hours watching thin lines of tiny ants march back and forth. He kept a notebook, pencil, and magnifying glass with him so he could watch the ants closely and keep notes.
The magnifying glass was a great tool. With it, Reth could see the ants’ antennae wave as they marched along. He did not keep the glass on the ants for too long, though. It focused the sunlight and could burn the ants. Reth took a quick look through the glass. Then he scribbled notes. He wrote down what the ants looked like and what they did.
When Reth had enough notes, he went home and looked in his encyclopedia. It told about all kinds of ants, from army ants to fire ants. He compared his notes with the descriptions of ants in the text. Since Reth lived in a suburb, he mostly saw common garden ants. Sometimes he saw carpenter ants. He hoped to travel to the jungle one day so he could see giant Amazon ants, farmer ants, and army ants.
One afternoon Reth found a boy named Henry near the anthill. Henry was poking(戳) at the ants with a long stick.
“Why are you doing that?” Reth asked.
“I like to watch them scurry(急赶) around,” Henry replied.
“If you disturb the ants,” Reth said, “they won’t be able to get the food they need to their nest.”
“So what?” Henry asked.
Reth explained to Henry that ants collected food for their young and the queen, who were unable to leave the nest. He also let Henry look through his magnifying glass. Then he let Henry read his notes.
“Ants are like little people!” Henry exclaimed. Reth took Henry to his house and showed him the encyclopedia.

Teens want structure in their lives, which means they want their lives well-planned. To begin building structure, teens need love and trust. They need to know their parents are there to give them needed love and support (支持). Teens want to be sure that nothing can prevent parents from shouldering their responsibility for them — not their growing maturity (成熟), misbehavior, nor anger at something they have done. Teens want parents to keep control while allowing them to make some decisions.
There are some ways you can help your teens create reasonable structure and remain close. One way is to spend time together. Parents often mistake their teens’ increased interest in friends for a disinterest in the family.
Teens would like to spend more time doing things with their parents, but watching TV is not counted as spending time together. As your teens mature, it is important for you and your teens spend time alone together, one to one. Your teens need time to talk to you alone without any other family member present. Talk with your teens about their interests and concerns. Make sure you really show interest in what is happening. When talking with your teens, give full attention and do not stop them.
The way to help your teens become adults is to let your teens into your world. Sharing your emotions and concerns with your teens is important. Avoid causing needless worry. Trust your teens. Don’t expect the worst. Hope for the best. Telling your teens you don’t like their friends will cause the teens not to bring their friends home. If something should go wrong, believe that your teens didn’t do it on purpose.
It is very important that you treat your teens with respect. Teens need the same respect adults show for total strangers. Don’t talk down to your teens.
You need to be supportive of your teens. What may be a small problem to you may be troubling to your teens. Teens don’t have the experiences that adults have had. Let the teens know that you understand how much it hurts when something happens that is upsetting or hurtful to them. As they mature, they can look back at some problems they had and laugh at having been upset by something that now seems unimportant.
The most important things to remember are: talk with your teens, listen to their worries and offer suggestions when needed. This will help your teens to live a well-organized life.
81.According to Paragraph 1, teens ______.
A.can control themselves B.expect direction and freedom
C.don’t know how to make decision D.don’t have responsibility for the family
82.The underline part “counted as” in Paragraph 3 probably means “ ______ ”.
A.compared with B.used as
C.connected with D.regarded as
83.Parents can do the following things to remain close to their teenagers except ______.
A.give suggestions B.spend time alone together
C.trust their teens D.worry about the worst
84.To help teens organize their lives, parents should ______.
A.invite their teens’ friends home B.leave their teens’ problems alone
C.share their feelings with their teens D.pay little attention to their teens’ daily lives
85.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Training Teens to Become Responsible Adults.

My grandfather shows a great love for space engineering. Every summer on 21 July, my grandfather takes out old books and pictures and sits 96 the table. It’s always a day of memories for this old space worker. This is because on 21 July 1969, humans first stepped on the Moon.
My grandfather was just ten years old at the time, but he keeps 97 it throughout his life like it happened yesterday. On that day, 98 for the historic moment, his whole family sat in front of the TV earlier than they should. After Neil Armstrong and Buzz 99 successfully to the Moon, all of them cheered excitedly.
“We have left our little planet and stepped on 100 space body. Mars is next,” Grandfather 101 when he watched. But the following years were not satisfying for him 102 humans didn’t go to Mars.
He always tried to get my elder brothers interested in science. They were good at it, but they decided 103 they would start their own business. When I, his only granddaughter, turned out to be the only one who really loved science, you 104 imagine his surprise and joy!
Now I really love programmes about the space. I know the names of all the astronauts from 105 first man in space to the crew of the most recent spacecraft.
So every 21 July, Grandfather and I sit and go over 106 his old magazine pictures about the Moon landing, way back in 1969. They have encouraged me 107 much that I’ve become very interested in space engineering. I hope, one day, I could go to university to study 108 .
Space engineering is one of 109 subjects in college. It requires a good knowledge of maths and physics. There are only 110 girls learning it. The ratio ( 比例 ) between male students and female students is 7:3. Hopefully, I can encourage some more young girls to get into it — just like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin encouraged me.

Each of us fails from time to time. If we are wise, having enough experience and knowledge, we regard these failures as 111 important part of learning. But often as parents and teachers, we don’t offer this right to our children.
My student Donnie was in 112 . His worry about failure kept him away from classroom games that 113 children enjoyed. He seldom answered my questions-he was afraid of making mistakes.
I tried my best to build his self-confidence. 114 nothing changed until midterm, when Mary a new teacher came. She was young and pretty, and she 115 by every student including Donnie. It was the new teacher 116 made a big difference to Donnie later.
One morning, they were doing math problems at the blackboard. Donnie had copied problems 117 . But he’d missed the fourth problem and began to cry.
I didn’t know 118 . Suddenly, a smile appeared on Mary’s face. From the desk she got a box 119 pencils. “Look, Donnie,” she said gently. “I’ve got something to show you.”
“Look at 120 pencils, Donnie,” she continued. “They are 121 . See how the erasers are worn? That’s because I make mistakes too. But I erase the mistakes and try again. That’s what you 122 learn to do, too.”
She kissed him and stood up, “Here,” she said, “I 123 one of these pencils on your desk, so you’ll remember that everybody 124 mistakes, even teachers.” Donnie smiled.
The pencil became Donnie’s prize. It made him 125 the meaning of making mistakes is–it’s all right to make mistakes, as long as you erase them and try.

Born in 1948 in Los Angeles, California, in the United States, Mark Levine is now a singer, song-writer and English teacher. After working as a volunteer in low-income (收入) communities in the US for nearly 30 years, Levine came to China and worked as an English teacher 16 years ago. Levine didn’t realize at the time that he would soon come to fall in love with the country and end up staying here.
Levine likes to write songs and sing along to them with his guitar. So far, Levine has written more than seventy songs about China, with a wide variety of themes such as traveling, workers, Chinese culture and so on.
In 2020, the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19 changed him a lot. During the time, he said, “I was mostly stuck inside my apartment teaching online classes for three months. At the same time, I spent lots of time talking with my close friends I knew across China and abroad on line to learn the information about the outside.” He learned how the government and the Chinese people worked together to fight the virus (病毒), he was moved and he really wanted to write it down. Levine said that Chinese people had a collective sense that “we are all in this together”. A song about it was added to his large collection of musical stories about his life in China, the song’s name is “Together we must take a stand -fight the novel coronavirus.”
“I’ve never felt unsafe in China about anything, including COVID-19. I’m glad I am here,” he said.
Levine hopes that the world can work together to defeat COVID-19, just like the lyric he wrote in his song: “Coronavirus, we will defeat. So here and there in every land, together we will take a stand.”

Good morning, everyone!
I am very happy to be here to make a speech today. The topic is “One Thing I Keep Doing”.
Knowledge may be acquired through many ways, the best of which is reading. In the age of high technology, reading deserves to be paid attention to. So I keep reading every day.
To begin with, it is the most flexible way of getting information. Many people think it not only helps them better understand society as well as nature, but also broadens their horizon. Additionally, reading, to some degree, is of great benefit to interpersonal communication apart from self-improvement. It can also enrich our life and bring people pleasure. What’s more, reading is also regarded by many as a means of better survival.
Personally, I appreciate reading classical literature in my spare time, which provides me with a thorough understanding of life and society. Through practicing reading between the lines and beyond the lines, I find my comprehension ability stably improved. Let’s keep doing one thing well and achieve better ourselves.
That’s all. Thank you for listening.
