When you hear Westerners (西方人) say “Drop in anytime” (随时来玩) or “Come and see me soon”, you should realize that it doesn’t mean you are welcome to come over to their house anytime. It’s wise to telephone before visiting someone.
Never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may refuse by saying, “Thank you for inviting me, but I may not be able to come.” If you are unable to come after accepting the invitation, be sure to tell those who invite you in advance (提前) that you will not be there.
When you have accepted the invitation to a party or a dinner, it is polite to bring small gifts with you, such as bottles of drink, flowers and chocolate. Sometimes Westerners may take you out to dinner in a restaurant and it does not necessarily mean that he is going to pay the bill at the end of the meal. In European countries, it is a very strange idea to eat a dog. My Chinese friends explained that the dog meat is very useful for warming the body during winter and is often eaten in the north of China.
In England we call dogs “man’s best friend”. It would be against the law to eat a dog in England. In China, it is a big shock when we hear of people eating dogs, or, as I did, end up eating them ourselves.

In the eyes of many foreigners, Chinese are the best hosts (主人) and the worst guests in the world. They’re not really bad guests, but because the guest-host relationship in China is much different than in some western countries, it appears that they are not nice guests. And western hosts sometimes look rude(粗鲁的) in the eyes of Chinese guests.
In China, guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese person’s home, there is always fruit on the table for me, and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the west, generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host’s way of doing things is usual behavior for a guest.
My wife’s mother, a very kind elderly Chinese lady, doesn’t smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker, I feel unhappy. Usually, I want to stop them directly, but I must realize that in China, to be a good host, she must not do that. In most North American homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least, you could ask, “Is it OK if I smoke?” But, don’t be surprised if they say, “No, you can’t smoke.” In our culture, if you smoke in their home, you are a bad guest, but if they do not allow you to smoke in their house, they are not a rude host.
Guests in China also have special habits. Some western people may not adapt to these habits very soon. Thankfully my wife is Chinese, so whenever we visit a Chinese family, she tells me to buy them a gift. However, giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So, if you invite international guests to your house, don’t be too surprised if they don’t bring you a gift.
In China, you probably won’t need to change the guest-host relationship very much because you will probably only be the host, and Chinese are naturally very good hosts. If western hosts invite you to their house, try not to be too surprised if their style of treating you is not what you have expected.
103.Many foreigners think that Chinese hosts are the ________ in the world.
    A.best B.worst C.most natural
104.When a western guest visits a Chinese family, he often ________.
A.buys some fruit B.feels like a god C.wants some gifts
105.If the writer’s guests want to smoke in his house, what will he probably say?
A.It’s OK if you smoke here.
    B.Let’s smoke together.
    C.Sorry, you can’t smoke here.
106.What is the meaning of the underlined phrase “adapt to” in the passage?
A.think back to B.get used to C.look forward to
107.What is the main idea of this passage?
    A.Foreigners should learn from Chinese.
B.Western hosts are always nice to guests.
    C.People should understand cultural differences.
How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work on a group project with other students? Do you like to work together with others or work alone?
The Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, carried out a survey of students’ ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well on tests by themselves are also likely to be better at working with other people. This finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are high, also did well in working together to solve problems. But this is not the case for every country. Chinese students, who tend (倾向于) to have high scores as well, displayed just average collaborative (合作的) skills.
“One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades,” said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association. “Students have a lot of exam pressure and they view school as a place for competition.” “However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students for today’s society,” he added. Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve these skills.
Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls tend to be better than boys at working together. They said girls show more positive attitudes towards relationships, which means they are more willing to listen to others’ opinions.
PISA also found that the classroom environment tends to influence how well students collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication, such as class debates, students tend to have better attitudes toward collaborating.
108.In which country should the students improve their collaborative skills?
    A.China. B.South Korea. C.Canada. D.Finland.
109.Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3?
A.Chinese parents and teachers don’t care about grades.
B.Chinese students have little exam pressure.
C.Collaborative skills are not important in China’s society.
D.Chinese parents hope to help students improve their collaborative skills.
110.What can we learn from the PISA survey in the passage?
A.Students with good grades are likely to be worse at working in groups
B.Boys tend to be better than girls at working together.
C.The classroom environment tends to influence how well students collaborate.
D.Chinese students are the best at working with others.
111.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Students in Canada should improve their collaborative skills.
B.The PISA carried out a survey and got interesting findings.
C.Boys should improve their collaborative skills.
D.Teachers should improve the classroom environment.

An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You’ve never been to an American’s home before, and you’re not sure what to do. Should you take a gift? What should you dress? When should you arrive? Glad you asked. When you’re the guest, you should just make yourself at home.
The question of whether or not to bring a gift often troubles guests. In American culture, a guest is not obligated (强迫) to bring a present. Of course, some people do bring some small gifts to their hosts. Proper gifts generally might be flowers, candy or—if the family has small children—toys. If you choose not to bring a gift, don’t worry. No one will even notice that.
For most informal (非正式的) dinners, you should wear everyday clothes. Plan to arrive on time, or call to tell your hosts about the delay (延迟). During the dinner conversation, it’s customary to compliment (称赞) the hosts about the wonderful meal. Of course, the biggest compliment is to eat lots of food! When you’ve had plenty, you might offer to clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you’re the guest, your hosts may not let you do that. Instead, they may invite you to move to the living room for dessert with tea or coffee. After an hour or so of general talking, it’s probably time to head for the door.
Americans usually like to have advance notice (提前通知) when people come to see them. Only very close friends drop by without any notice. This is especially true if the guests want to stay for a few days. Even relatives don’t usually stay for several weeks at a time. Here’s some good advice for house guests: Short stays are the best. While you’re staying with an American family, try to keep your living area clean and tidy. Your host family will be thankful for your consideration. And they may even invite you back!

    Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
Is it OK to regift present?
People in the UK spend a total of £700 million each year on Christmas presents that aren’t wanted.
Regifting means giving an unwanted present to someone else at a later date.
Regifting could also mean giving the present to charity.

No-receive presents with gratitude. Giving gifts is a tradition that brings families and friends together. The right response to a present is to be thankful, whether you want the thing or not. To pass a present on is ungrateful and rude. What happens in six months if the giver asks to see the thing they considerately (4S) chose and gave you, or asks if you’re enjoying it? You might hurt the giver’s feelings. Besides, a thing is only a waste if a person doesn’t use it. So be imaginative, work out how to enjoy the gift and be thankful.

Giving presents is a thoughtful act of generosity (慷慨) that should be met with thanks — regifting could be seen as rude and ungrateful by the giver.
Regifting may mean the person receiving the present has to lie later on and pretend that they still have the present and are using it.
Instead of regifting, be imaginative and think about how to make use of the present and enjoy it.
Yes — an unwanted thing becomes treasure. When it comes to presents, some say it’s the thought that counts. Others think it’s the thing, and when the thing is unwanted, the present is just a waste. There’s a lot of waste in the world, and it’s damaging the environment. Instead of adding to the problem, give the gift to someone who will love it. Books and toys can be given to a friend on their birthday or to a children’s charity, and clothes to a homeless shelter. In any case, it is often much better to give than to receive.

Regifting is an excellent way to make
use of something that would otherwise
(否则) be a waste. There is far too much
waste and it’s terrible for the environment.
You can give the gift to a friend on a birthday, or to charitable (善) cause, and make someone else happy with the thing you didn’t want.
Regifting turns disappointment into joy. One person’s waste is another’s ________.

When Chinese movie lovers watched Fantastic Beasts which came out on April 8th, they would see the phoenix(凤凰) and the qilin. These are the familiar mythological creatures(神奇动物) in their childhood.
The qilin is a very rare creature that can hardly be seen in the wizarding(魔法) world, only found in East China. Wizards had long respected this creature for its ability to look into a person’s heart.
The qilin is seen as a gentle creature in Chinese culture. Its head looks like a dragon and its body looks like a deer or horse. It can tell between good and evil and can even bring luck.
In English, the qilin is sometimes called the “Chinese unicorn(独角兽)”. This may be because they are gentle and virtuous(正直的), like unicorns. In the west, this horse-like creature has one horn on its head. It is said that a unicorn’s horn or tears can treat serious injuries.
There are other creatures appearing in both Chinese culture and western culture. In Chinese culture, the phoenix is very important. It stands for luck and is the “king of birds”. In the west, it is a symbol of immortality(不朽) and rebirth. Although they look alike, dragons in China and the west are very different beasts. The dragon is a respected creature in China, symbolizing good luck, while western dragons are always full of bad thoughts and bring dangers to the world.

Because saving food is a traditional virtue of our Chinese nation.

    Dear Mike,
I am glad to hear the information that you will come to China. Chinese people are very friendly, so please take it easy. Here are some suggestions for good manners in China.
First, respect everyone. If you respect others, you will get respect from others. Second, be willing to help others. When you see others need help, you shouldn’t be afraid of trouble or losses. Reach out your hand in time. It is easier to leave a good impression on others by giving help in time of need. Third, use polite language. When communicating with others, “please” and “thank you” will make you welcome.
I wish you a happy time in China!
    Sincerely yours,
    Li Hua
