Posted on November 29, 2021 by Tina. And then the four girls gave their replies.

    Wang Meimei, China
For an appointment, I always make sure I’m on time. Once I had a friend who was always late for every meeting. For example, if we made it at 9, it would be a 45-minute trip for her. And then she would arrive at 9:45. I liked her a lot, but I could not stand her unpunctuality.

Is the Mobile Phone a Must-have for Teenagers?
Next time you're in a public place, take a look around you, and count how many people are using their mobile phones. I can tell you now that it is probably more than half, whether you're on public transport, in a café or simply walking down the street. With the development of technology, we can now do almost anything on the mobile phones. How does the use of mobile phones affect(影响) the young? Do they really need mobile phones or not? Some British parents, teachers and teenagers give their opinions on this subject.
Parents want their kids to be safe. Are teenagers safer with a mobile phone or without? William, a parent of two kids, says, "The great thing about my kids having mobile phones is that I can keep in touch with them. The worst thing about teenagers having phones is that some young people use them to send impolitemessages to each other." Some parents have rules about their children's mobile phone and internet usage. If they break the rules, their phones will be kept by their parents.

In the UK, students can take their mobile phones to school, but they are not allowed to use them in class. Some teachers complain(抱怨) that students don’t always follow the rules. They don't listen carefully in class because they are using their phones to surf the internet, chat with friends or so on. As for the students, most of them think phones are part of their lives. They can keep in touch with family and friends, and they can take photos, keep important information and surf the internet, which is very convenient(方便). Some consider phones as a kind of fashion(时尚) and they don't want others to see them as "out" or "different".
It’s true that mobile phones have become a symbol of the modern life. This form of technology makes teenagers' life much more convenient, but if teenagers depend too much on them, it can lead to serious problems. Increasingly scientists are saying that everyone needs a break from mobile phones —put them away and experience “the real life”. In fact it can be very easy—next time when you go out with friends, put all of your phones in the middle of the table. Whoever touches his phone first has to pay the bill!
Indeed, the convenience brought by mobile phones is great, but don't let your phone become more important than the “real”people in your “real”life.
90.The mobile phones will probably be kept by parents if the teenagers________.
A.go out with classmates and friends and pay the bill
B.search for a lot of important information and keep it
C.take them to school and look up new words after class
D.send impolitemessages and surf the Internet too much
91.According to the passage which of the following is true?
A.All students consider mobile phones as a kind of fashion.
B.Teachers allow students to use mobile phones in class in the UK.
C.Parents often count how many young people are using mobile phones.
D.More and more scientists think people need a break from mobile phones.
92.What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
A.Schools should stop students from taking their phones to school.
B.The mobile phone is the most important invention in modern life.
C.Mobile phones are useful but teenagers shouldn’t totally depend on them.
D.Talking with friends on mobile phones is better than doing it face to face.

Most people who move to a foreign country may experience a period of time when they feel very homesick and have a lot of stress. This experience is often called “culture shock”. It is important to understand and learn how to deal with it if you want to adapt (适应) successfully to your new home’s culture.
Generally speaking, there are four stages you will experience if you move to a foreign country. The first stage is usually referred to as (被称为) the excitement stage. When arriving in a new environment, you’ll be interested in the new culture; everything will seem exciting and everyone will seem friendly.
But it isn’t long before the excitement stage moves into the second stage. The excitement you felt before changes to stress. It seems that everything is difficult; the language is hard to learn, friends are difficult to make, and even simple things like shopping are challenges. It is at this stage that you are likely to feel frustrated (沮丧) and homesick. This is the stage which is referred to as “culture shock”.
However, culture shock doesn’t last very long. If you are one of those who manage to overcome it, you’ll move into the “recovery” stage. At this stage, you start to understand and accept the way things are done and the way people behave in your new environment.
The last stage is the “home” stage. This is the stage when you start to feel at home in the new culture. You start to learn from your new home, and prefer certain aspects of the new culture to your own culture.
Culture shock is normal. Everyone in a new situation will go through some form of it. Be brave, and overcoming culture shock is a piece of cake.

Most expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example, “a homeless dog”,“a mad dog”,“a running dog” and “a dog catching a mouse”, have bad meanings. 108 In English, people use the dog to describe good actions. For example, “You are a lucky dog” means you are a lucky person. And “every dog has its day” means each person has good luck sometimes. To describe a person’s serious illness, they say “sick as a dog”. The word “dog-tired” means very tired. 109 But in western culture, “cat” is often used to describe a woman who is cruel.
110 People think the rose means love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is the national flower of England, America and many other countries.
111 We can learn about many differences in cultures by comparing how some words are used.
A.However, Chinese love cats very much.
    B.Some words have different meanings.
C.It’s not necessary to learn about differences in cultures.
D.We can see differences when we pay attention to the way words are used.
E.But in western countries, dogs are thought to be honest and good friends of humans.
F.The rose is regarded as a symbol of love in both China and some Western countries.
G.The words about plants and animals are used in different ways in different cultures.
"How are you?" is a nice question. It's a friendly greeting that people in the United States use. 112 It's a question that often doesn't need an answer. The person who asks, "How are you?" expects to hear the answer "Fine," even if the person isn't fine. The reason is that "How are you?" isn't really a question and "Fine" isn't really an answer. They are common ways of saying "hello" or "hi".
113 For example, when someone asks "Do you agree?", the other person may be thinking, "No, I don't. I think you're wrong." It isn't polite to disagree very strongly, so he might say, "I am not so sure." 114
People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking to other people. For example, many conversations over the phone end when one person says, "I've got to go now," or the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse such as "Someone is at the door," or, "Something is burning on the stove." 115 The person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say so. An excuse is polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an opinion, or ending a conversation, people often don't say exactly what they are thinking. 116
A.This is a nicer way to say that you don't agree with someone.
B.You'd better not tell the truth to your family.
C.However, "How are you?" is also an unusual question.
D.The excuse may be real, or not.
E.Sometimes, people don't say exactly what they mean.
F.If you disagree with others, they will hate you.
G.This is one way of being nice to people, and it's a part of the game of language.

The meaning of silence is different among different cultures.
Many people in some Asian cultures think silence is a basic part of communication. When a traditional Chinese or Thai is speaking and suddenly stops, he probably wants the listener to consider what he has said before he continues. Many people may think silence is a sign of respect, especially to an elder or a person with power.
Western cultures may use silence in other ways. In America, if you keep silent in a conversation, the speaker may think you’re impolite or not listening to them carefully. Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show they agree with the discussion of the topic. However, Mexicans may keep silent when instructions are given by a person with a lot of power, even though they don’t agree with the instructions.
In our daily life, if we know the exact meaning of one’s silence, it’s quite helpful, too. A man was ill in hospital. One morning, when the nurse said “Hello!” to him, he said “Hello!” back. “How are you feeling now?” the nurse continued. But the man lay in bed and looked at the nurse, saying nothing. “Not well, right? Then I will check it for you, OK?” the patient was still silent. Then the nurse passed him a cup of warm water. He drank it quickly. After that, the nurse checked up his health. “Mr. Smith, your blood pressure is a little high. But don’t worry, you’ll soon be well again after taking some medicine.” The man smiled and said, “You’re the best nurse I’ve ever met.” You see, this is how silence works.

    十一、多任务混合阅读
    阅读短文,并按要求完成各小题。
You can tell a lot about your friends by what they carry in their schoolbags: what they read, and other things they like to do out of school.
In the bags of middle school-age boys in the UK, you can find hand-held computer games and football magazines. Girls usually have a book in their bags (maybe a romantic novel) and some make-up (化妆品) and hair clips (发夹). Boys and girls both often have an iPod, a mobile phone, and, of course, last night’s homework!
By looking in a friend’s bag, you can tell what kind of person he or she is. A clean and tidy bag without trash (废物) shows an organized (有条理的) person. A bag full of textbooks and pens belongs to someone who works hard.
British middle school-age children also have a locker (有锁的存储柜) at school. They store their books or sports things, such as a football or tennis rackets there. They use pictures to make the inside of their lockers beautiful. Maybe they have pictures of their favorite music or sports stars, or photos of their friends. So just like their bags, their lockers say a lot about the person.

In Chinese culture, some numbers 137 (believe)to be lucky or unlucky based on the Chinese word that the number sounds similar to.

Some people will even spend a lot of money to have 8s in their phone number or on their vehicle license plate(车牌照)number. The 139 (open)ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8: 08 pm on Aug 8, 2008.

Because of this, many buildings skip(跳过)the fourth floor, and simply call it the 144 (five)floor. In Hong Kong, some buildings even skip all floors numbered with 4, such as 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40-49 floors. Some buildings also skip the 13th floor, as this is considered an unlucky number in western countries. As a result, a building whose 145 (high)floor is 50 may have only 35 physical floors.

    How to behave well?
As a student in Yibin, we should behave well.
First, I think it’s very important to do everything on time and keep promises. Never lie to others or say dirty words. Next we should be polite to others and ready to help people in need. Then we’d better not talk loudly in public. Don’t throw litter or spit about. And remember to obey traffic rules. Finally, learn to work with others. We need good team work in our life.
If everyone behaves well, our city will be more and more beautiful.
    168.范文:
    Learn to be polite
Being polite in our daily life is very helpful. It can help improve people’s relationship and avoid many social problems.
However, in our life, we often see some people do impolite behavior, such as laughing at others, making noise as well as smoking in public. So as middle school students, how should we learn to be polite? When we are waiting for the bus, we are supposed to wait in line. Always remember to keep quiet in the library. What’s more, throw the rubbish into the waste basket instead of throwing it everywhere.
I believe that if everyone is polite, we will live a happier life.
