PHOTO PROVIDED BY TUCHONG
A new Guinness (吉尼斯) World Record was set on April 1st, Global Times reported.
550 students, from the San Diego Academy, made 868 sandwiches in three minutes. They broke the world record of 490 sandwiches. They gave the sandwiches to homeless and poor people.
The students who made the sandwiches were from kindergarten to 12th grade. On that day, they found 52 tables that were lined up waiting for them in the school gym. On each table, there were pieces of bread, lettuce, sliced tomatoes and cheese. And forty-five parent volunteers were on hand to help, School News added.
The students quickly got to work. The youngest students made one sandwich each, while the older ones made two. Within two minutes, almost all of them were finished. They happily waved their hands and gave each other high five in the air.
School head Chaim Heller thought it was a great experience for students and it brought them together.

When her family sold the farm and moved to nearby town, Emma was excited. But when she got to the new school, she felt out of place. She had few classmates to talk to.

Dear Aunt Carla,
I’m having a problem with my classmate, Joan, at school. The other day I wrote an email to another classmate, Beth, in which I said something about Joan that perhaps wasn’t very nice. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she sent it to HYPERLINK “mail to: Joan@163.com,” Joan@163.com, which is Joan’s email address! Now Joan is really angry with me and won’t talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. She has said sorry to me a hundred times already, but the harm is done. I feel bad, because I would never have said those things to Joan’s face, but how do I get her to forgive (谅解) me? What should I do?
To: Eric@163.com
From: Carla@yahoo.com
Subject: Some advice
Date: 16/04/2019, 8:30 AM
Dear Eric,
This problem is more common than you might think! Email is very useful, but also very dangerous, as you don’t know where your message might end up! First of all, you should say sorry right away to Joan. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn’t mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that’s up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you’re truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” And good luck!
Carla

Proudly reading my words, I looked quickly around the room, only to find my classmates laughing to tears. Not knowing what happened, I looked toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report, hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”
Quickly, I thought back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an old teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this guy, I found that there were two people having the same name but looking completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some kind of army across America. I looked at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip a coin. Heads—the commander, and tails—the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.
Weeks later, standing in front of the unfriendly class, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear. “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution (革命).”
The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?
Not surprisingly, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: no re-dos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not reasonable, and I believed I should have a second chance. As a result, I threw myself into my work for the rest of the school year.
Ten months later, I found myself sitting in the headmaster’s office with my grandfather, now having a completely different conversation. I smiled and thought back to the moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster announced to me that my application to skip the sixth grade was not passed. Justice(公正) is sweet!

D.Because he really wondered why his classmates acted that way.

C.He turned things around by redoing his task in the end.
D.He made the headmaster change his mind by working hard.

Dear Miss Yu,
I’m Linda. I’m writing this letter because I want to tell you that the school year I spent with you was special to me.
I used to be very shy and quiet. You never said much to me. But you did something that made a big difference to my life.
In the past, I hated English. I didn’t think it was interesting. And my English was very poor. In Grade 9, you became my English teacher. You always made your classes lively arid interesting. I found it easy to remember what you taught us. Once I was asked to introduce myself in English. Because of my poor English, you didn’t say anything bad but told me if I worked hard on my pronunciation, I would do better. Your encouragement changed me a lot. From then on, I began to study English very hard.
Now, I enjoy studying English. My dream is to become an English teacher. I want to help students study English like you.
Yours,
Linda

American schools are quite different from those in China. In America,at the beginning of the term, students must select their courses and teachers first. While in China students usually have no chances to select their courses and teachers.
Selecting is very important for your grades in America. So in the first term, don’t select too many courses,or you’ll feel very nervous and it may influence your study. Then you have to ask for some teaching plans. There is some information about subjects, time arranging, marks and textbooks. At the same time, you must choose the teachers. Different teachers have different teaching methods. If the teacher is called “killer” by the last grade, many students will give up choosing him. Because this kind of teacher will leave too much homework, too many exams and give too low grades.
There is another thing after you select the course and the teacher. How to buy textbooks makes each student feel hard. The textbooks in America are very expensive. Each copy is about $30~50. In order to save money, many students buy some used textbooks, and some students usually borrow textbooks from the school library. You must get ready before class. In class, discussing is very important. The teachers encourage you to ask/raise questions or show your own opinions/ideas. They don’t usually ask you to sit well. Instead they allow you to sit or stand everywhere you like. They don’t give you much homework to do. You can learn some knowledge and do exercises by yourself. So in American schools, you must do almost all things yourself.
119.American schools are the same as those in China.
120.American students can select their courses and teachers.
121.In America, students can buy used textbooks to save money.
122.Students in America can’t discuss in class.

Have you ever talked back to your teachers? 124 You need to stand up and say hello to the teacher when he or she enters the classroom. You should pay attention all the time in class, and should take an active part in different activities. And you should speak to your teachers politely at any time.
125 If your teacher doesn’t accept late homework, do yours on time. Sometimes the classroom rules seem to be too strict. 126 The better the learning environment is, the better you will study.

Ever imagined what it might be like to go to school in another country? Join us as we spend a school day on the Sunny Island!
Welcome to Blue Sky School on the Sunny Island! This cool school is situated in the north side of the island. It opened in 1962, and teaches 192 students between the ages of 6 and 16.
What does the school look like?
Blue Sky School might look a little different from your school at home! The buildings are brightly colored and decorated with paintings on the walls that display the typical trees and fruits on the island, like bananas!
Healthy eating is an important topic at Blue Sky School. Many children that go to school here are from poor backgrounds. Many of the students’ parents work long hours in local hotels. They don’t have much time to make breakfast for their children before school. To help out, nearby hotel Bay Gardens Resort runs a breakfast club at school and students are able to get a tasty breakfast to start the day, free of charge. So school is a place for them to learn and eat a healthy meal.
The school kids say that getting to eating breakfast with their friends before class is one of the reasons they love coming to school!
What’s a school day like?
The school day begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m.

Because of the COVID-19(新冠肺炎), teachers are trying their best to come up with creative ways to connect with their students.
First-grade teacher Katie Ricca of Florida has been giving her math lessons every day on Zoom. At the same time, she has to take care of the studies of her five little ones. So when she spared no effort to help one of her students out, the child’s mom couldn't stop singing her praises.
During one of her many Zoom calls, Katie noticed a girl named Hannah had shut down in the middle of the lesson. "Our class tried talking to her, but there's something wrong with her." Katie said later. When Hannah left the lesson early, she became worried.
Once class was over, Katie texted Kelley Close, her mom, to check in and found out Hannah “was sad but didn't know why." On hearing this, Katie asked if she could pay a short visit the next day. Kelley said yes.
“Today her teacher came over and hung out for some time.” Kelley wrote on Facebook. "They chatted, read books, and just talked. Though this woman has five kids at home, she kept social distancing(距离) with my daughter and sat in my driveway for an hour to make sure Hannah was okay."
For Katie, spending time with Hannah wasn't a waste of time. “Seeing my student upset, I knew I had to show her I care for her,” the teacher explained. “She told me she couldn't understand the math lesson and that she felt bad about that. I just explained the lesson to her again and told her to do more math practice. I showed her I understood her feelings and that she wasn't alone.”
In the hour, Katie took away from homeschooling her own children that day. She gave a sweet memory to a little girl in need.

“Now class, I want you to write a passage,” Miss Anderson said. “Remember, be creative—and use your imagination!”
“Are there any questions?” she asked.
A tall boy with brown eyes who was sitting in the back of the room, cracking his gum* in the most unpleasant way, slowly raised his hand. He was Jonathan. If there was a big task to finish, he would find some way for himself and the class to avoid doing it. Miss Anderson's heart sank.
“Jonathan?”
“Can't.”
“You can't what?” she asked, not looking up.
“Use my imagination,” he answered slowly, as if talking to a little child.
“Why ever not?” she stared at him wonderingly. He had her full attention now.
“Lost it,” he replied, as if she needed no other explanation.
“You, you lost your imagination?” she asked in disbelief*.
“Yes.” The gum cracking became louder.
Miss Anderson's sense of humour was now starting to get the better of her, although she was very tired, so she decided to play along.
“Well, this certainly is serious,” she said. “When exactly did you lose it?”
“Um, um, today.”
“Today, Jonathan?”
“Yeah, today. Abou, about now.” he decided.
“Oh, really? Hm... Do you have any idea where you lost it?” she was beginning to enjoy this.
“Um, could be... could be home, or could be here. Don't know.” The gum cracking became even louder. “Don't know where it is, don't know what I did with it, and don't know where it could be. Just lost it,” he answered casually*.
“Oh, I see. Well, have you checked at the Lost and Found? I'm sure if you went down to the office and asked the head teacher. he had...”
“No. no,” he said quickly. “I, ah, already checked at the Lost and Found and... um...it wasn't there. Yeah, it wasn't there.”
“Well, Jonathan, I, ah, guess there's nothing you can do. You certainly can't do this task without an imagination, so you're allowed not to do it.” Miss Anderson said.
Now Jonathan threw a victory look at no one and cracked his gum with satisfaction.
“Oh, Jonathan, wait a minute. I have an idea,” Miss Anderson said, turning around “Maybe, maybe if you stay after school tonight, I could help you find it. I'm sure, with both of us working together, we could certainly find your imagination. And you can stay as long as you need to—maybe even the whole night! How does that sound?”

In his free time, he not only likes reading detective stories, travelling but also likes watching programs about sports. But since this term, he has devoted most of time to study and has made great progress. He is good at sports, especially running. He came first in the race of school sports meeting this year. He is such a brave young boy that he successfully helped Detective Lu solve the case of kidnapping. Because of this, he was honored with “Award for Bravery”.
But recently, he has got some problems. He is suffering from the coming exams. He feels so stressed that he can’t sleep well at night. I think that he worries too much and should arrange his time well so that he can achieve the confidence and pass the exams successfully. I hope he thinks my advice is worth taking.

In my daily life, I should be polite to others, not only the teachers but also my parents as well as other people around us, such as the workers at school. Besides, being an excellent student also means being honest as well as keeping promises. What’s more, I shall read more great books to increase the knowledge of the world. Following the rules and protecting the environment are another two important things I should remember.

It looked like nothing could change his life until the day his father died. He 56 the bad boys and went to help his mother who sold food by the roadside.
He really pitied his mother and wanted to do something to 57 her. He loved reading comic books and had been collecting them for years, so he decided that he should sell them. Soon he realized that his 58 were very popular. So he decided to 59 his own business. He went around buying comic books from other people. He bought them for 25% and then 60 them for half price.
These days, he doesn’t have to go around looking for comic books because there are 61 people coming to his shop to sell their old ones. Now he makes about 55,000 baht(泰铢) a month.
Peter was a "troublemaker" to his teachers but he is a hero to me. 62 you are regarded by others as a "bad student", I suggest you ignore(不予理睬) what they say. Just do your best in everything. Believe me, one day you can be 63 , too.

SCHOOLLIFESandwich Record Set

Emma stared sadly out of the window of the bus. Only 50 miles outside town was the farm where she grew up. She thought about the farm all the time, especially the animals.
When her family sold the farm and moved to nearby town, Emma was excited. But when she got to the new school, she felt out of place. She had few classmates to talk to.
With a sigh, Emma turned her attention back to the present. The bus came to a stop. “Welcome to the Nature Center,” her teacher said.” A guide will give us a presentation about the animals, and then you’ II help to feed the baby squirrels. Now, I want everyone to find a partner.”
Emma didn’t have any friends yet who would be her partner? Emma got close to Julia, a talkative and outgoing girl. “Could I be your partner?” Emma asked uncertainly.

Dear Eric,
This problem is more common than you might think!

111.What did the writer’s classmates think of his report?
A.Wonderful. B.Stupid. C.Boring. D.Interesting.
112.Why did the writer feel burning when he lowered the paper and sat down at his desk?
A.Because he was quite sure that he did a good job in the report.
B.Because he felt so angry about his classmates’ unfriendliness.
C.Because he felt very ashamed that he made such a big mistake.
D.Because he really wondered why his classmates acted that way.
113.What can we infer from the passage about the writer?
A.He was never popular among his classmates.
B.He didn’t listen to his teachers carefully in class.
C.He turned things around by redoing his task in the end.
D.He made the headmaster change his mind by working hard.

Now, I enjoy studying English. My dream is to become an English teacher. I want to help students study English like you.

十一、多任务混合阅读
Silence.
“Um, Miss Anderson?” he asked quietly.
“Yes, Jonathan?”
“Found it.”

I want to be an excellent student
I believe everybody wants to be an excellent student, including me.
To achieve the goal, I shall study harder and think more about the questions than ever before.
I hope I can keep my words and be an excellent student.
