Ever find yourself wondering what it might be like to live in some of TV's most famous homes? Famous homes can become part of the reason you fall in love with a series, so here are some of our favorites.
Big Little Lies: Madeline's house
By far the most beautiful beach nest in the series is Madeline's house, which is actually located in Malibu. The real house boasts seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and a balcony surrounded by walls providing some unreal ocean views. The house is said to have its fair share of celebrity guests too. It's no wonder why!
Modern Family: Jay's house
The two-story contemporary home is bursting with bold colors and animal prints, with many guessing that the decoration channels Gloria's strong personality. But it's the back yard that makes the house so appealing. The huge pool that's frequently spotted in various episodes is a strong reminder that we need to move to destination with more sunshine on offer.
American Horror Story: The Coven house
Although taken over by witches in the series and called “Miss Robichaux's Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies”, the elegant house is actually called Buckner Mansion. The famous home is complete with tall ceilings, impressive chandeliers, and stairs that go on forever. You can't actually visit the mansion, but you can stroll by it.
The Sopranos: Tony's house
The spacious New Jersey home has a huge dining area, four bedrooms, an outside pool, and that famous curved driveway featured in the opening credits. It's no wonder the famous house has just gone on the market for 3.4 million! Research shows that the mansion may have more than doubled in value since the show. It's still on the market so you too could live like a TV star!

Herb Chasan could have eased into retirement after spending 18 years teaching math to high school students. But the octogenarian(八旬老人) couldn’t rest. It wasn’t until eight years ago that he stepped into one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods. He noticed a group of children wandering nearby with nothing to do. He couldn’t shake the image from his mind, and it became the driving force for Hoops and Homework, an after-school program that has provided activities and tutoring for youth up to age 14. Since 2012, Hoops and Homework has helped more than 300 children who otherwise would have gone home to empty houses or roamed the streets until their parents got off work. Thanks to Mr. Chasan and dedicated staff and volunteers, the children instead have spent industrious afternoons making crafts, playing basketball, learning violin and yoga, gardening, and basking in the attention of a small army of tutors. “Our goal is to help these kids break the cycle of poverty and jail to have a good job, to be a
success,” says Mr. Chasan.
Within a few months, he secured $81,000 in town funding to start the program. It takes $170,000 annually to run the center. Hoops and Homework has encouraged people from different parts of the community to volunteer during the after-school sessions because they can tell the children “someday you may be doing that job, we love to have role models come in.”
The program goes beyond helping children. Most of the staff members are bilingual, which enables them to serve the largely Spanish-speaking community. “My English is not good,” says Keila Cupid, a parent who lives close to the center. But the mother of 11-year-old Cupid is clear in expressing her gratitude for Hoops and Homework: “It’s a safe space for my daughter when I am away to my English class.”
24. What motivation made Chasan decide on Hoops and Homework?
A. Homeless neighborhood kids.
B. Parents being engaged in work.
C. The volunteers in the community.
D. Children aimlessly walking around.
25. What activity is available in Hoops and Homework?
A. Making crafts.
B. Baking food.
C. Learning Spanish.
D. Doing extra homework.
26. Which statement does Chasan agree with?
A. More money should go to charity.
B. More people should join in voluntary work.
C. More community centers should be built.
D. More after-school activities should be considered.
27. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Starting an organization is tough.
B. Keila Cupid is studying Spanish.
C. Parents can benefit from the program.
D. The community kids must have a successful career.

Cotton bags have become a means for brands, retailers, and supermarkets to promote a planet-friendly concept—or, at least, to show that the companies are aware of the overuse of plastic in packaging. “There's a trend in New York right now where people are carrying cotton bags from local bakeries, hardware stores, or their favorite steakhouses,” said designer Rachel Comey.
So far, so earth-friendly? Not exactly. It turns out the wholehearted embrace of cotton bags may actually have created a new problem.
An organic cotton bag needs to be used 20,000 times to offset( 抵 消 ) its overall impact of production, according to a 2021 study by the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark. That is equal to daily use for 54 years-for just one bag. Even when a bag does make it, most coloring matters used to print logos and decorations onto them are PVC-based and thus not recyclable in waste treatment factories.
That's not to say cotton is worse than plastic, or that the two should even be compared. While cotton can use pesticides and has dried up rivers from water consumption, lightweight plastic bags use greenhouse gas-emitting fossil fuels, never break down, and block up the waterways.
Some brands are turning to other fabric solutions. British designer Ally Capellino recently swapped cotton for straw, while designer Anya Hindmarch introduced a new version of her original bag, this time made from recycled water bottles. In the end, the simplest solution may be the most obvious. “Not every product needs a bag,” Comey said.
28. Why on earth do companies offer cotton bags?
A. To provide convenience to their customers.
B. To cut down on the use of plastic packaging.
C. To advertise themselves as eco-friendly ones.
D. To promote the concept of protecting the earth.
29. What do we know about the cotton bags?
A. They can be used for over five decades.
B. They do much harm to the environment.
C. They have logos printed with natural materials.
D. They can be recycled in waste treatment factories.
30. How does the production of plastic bags affect the environment?
A. It consumes too much water. B. It saves the use of fossil fuels.
C. It pollutes the earth's atmosphere. D. It increases the use of pesticides.
31. Which might be the best title for the text?
A. Plastic Bags Beat Cotton Bags B. A Revolution for Bag Designers
C. How to Choose Bags for Yourself D. Less Packaging, Better Environment
D
The term “pseudo-working” is used to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard—he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night—but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she doesn't actually accomplish much.
This phenomenon can be seen on most college campuses. For example, at Dartmouth there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day, and the students I used to see there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working. The roommate who flips through her chemistry notes on the couch while watching TV is pseudo-working.
By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain's ability to think clearly and efficiently accomplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.
The bigger problem here is that most students don't even realize that they're pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work— it's how they've always done it, and it's how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it. It not only wastes time, but it's also mentally tiring.
In fact, the most important skill in becoming a straight-A student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive science research concludes that about fifty minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material integrated per time unit. So how do these students achieve this goal? To understand their secret to success, consider the following simple
formula(公式): work accomplished = time spent X intensity of focus.
Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach on the other hand, increases intensity in order to use less time.
32. Which of the following phenomenon is NOT pseudo-working?
A. Alex takes an online class while having snacks at a study lounge.
B. Lucy spends a long time in the library on her essay while listening to music.
C. Emily and Sara read their favorite books, as they talk about entertainment news.
D. Nick is busy taking notes while attending a training course in an academic hall.
33. What's the major problem of most students compared with straight-A students?
A. They are unaware of the fact that they are pseudo-working.
B. They have never thought about how to improve their study efficiency.
C. They are doing something to harm their brain's ability to think clearly.
D. They are willing to spend much time studying in a distracting environment.
34. What does the underlined word "optimal" mean in paragraph5?
A. Least. B. Best. C. Delicate. D. Accurate.
35. What does the author want to stress by mentioning the formula?
A. The length of time on study counts.
B. Getting work done quickly means everything.
C. Concentration plays a key role in study.
D. Effective study approach is very important.

Many people, sometimes myself including, tend to judge a person by his appearance.
I was afraid of my uncle who has a scary tattoo on his arm till my mother told me a “story” .When I was three-year-old naughty boy, I always ran around the neighborhood with my toy saber. Unfortunate, one day I hit a wild dog on accident. The dog became crazy and try to bite me. It was at that time when my uncle appeared and protected me with her strong arm. However, this accident left a scar on his arm. My uncle went to get a tattoo in order to cover up the scars. From that moment, he is my hero but instead of a bad looking uncle.
So we need to go beyond people's looks and focus on more internal spirits in order to truly judging
a person.
