一、阅读理解
1. I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley.
Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heart breaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl (猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick (雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but noluck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all-LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

Two days later I headed to my new school for the first day of class. At lunch, I noticed that there were twin brothers who were talking to each other. I remembered my dad's advice, so I decided to try.
I noticed that their lunch boxes were identical. "What's it like being a twin?" I asked.
They looked surprised. Then one said, "No one has ever asked us that!"
"Most of the time it's good," the other said. "When you're a twin you always have someone to talk to and have lunch with."
In no time we were laughing and talking. Then one of the brothers said, "I'm Nicholas, and this is my brother, Nathaniel. What's your name?"
I took a deep breath and said, "I'm Chelsea Chowderhead."
"Chowder? Like the soup?" asked Nathaniel.

4. Afternoon tea became popular about 150 years ago, when rich ladies invited their friends to their houses for a cup of afternoon tea. Usually taken in the late afternoon, it is also called "low tea" as it is served at a low table. Since this isn't a meal, but rather like a late afternoon snack, finger foods such as sandwiches, scones and pastries are common. People are taking tea not only to get what their bodies need or satisfy hunger, but to take time to relax, chat and enjoy the company of dear friends. In England, the traditional time for tea is four or five o'clock in the afternoon and no one stays after seven o'clock.
This very British tradition is said to have been started in the 1840s by Duchess Anna Maria, wife of the 7th Duke of Bedford, England. During the long time between an early lunch and a very late dinner, she experienced what she called "a sinking feeling" at about 4 or 5 in the afternoon. So she asked her serving girl to bring her a pot of tea, a little bread and butter and cake in her room. She found this arrangement (安排) so pleasing that she began asking her friends to join her.
High tea, a term often mixed with afternoon tea, usually takes the place of supper. In the past the British working population did not have afternoon tea. They had meals at about noon and after work between five and seven o'clock. The table would be set with dinner foods like meat, bread, butter, potatoes, cheese and of course tea. It was called M high tea" because it was eaten at a high dining table rather than a low tea table.
How much do people enjoy the afternoon tea moment? As a famous writer named Henry James said, "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated (把......专用于) to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."
1. How does the term "low tea" come about?
A. The tea is served in the late afternoon.
B. The tea is provided to treat friends.
C. The tea is drunk at a low table.
D. The tea is enjoyed to relax.
2. Who started the tradition of afternoon tea?
A. Duchess Anna Maria.
B. The 7th Duke of Bedford.
C. Henry James.
D. Some unknown working people.
3. What does the underlined phrase "a sinking feeling" refer to?
A. A feeling of being annoyed.
B. A feeling of hunger.
C. A feeling of missing friends.
D. A feeling of shyness.
4. Why does the author mention Henry James' words?
A. To show the difference between afternoon tea and high tea.
B. To tell us that afternoon tea is in fact a ceremony.
C. To tell us how the name "afternoon tea" comes out.
D. To show how popular afternoon tea is among people.

When Lisa was a little girl, she learned an important lesson from her father. Her father told her that when she faced a problem, she should never give up, and instead she should try another solution. In the following years, Lisa always remembers her father's words.
When Lisa was little, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer after growing up. It was always her dream. But it was not an easy road.
After graduating from college, Lisa went to Paris with her designs in order to make her dream come true. In Paris, she tried to talk to famous designers and show them some of her designs, but none of them showed any interest.
Though Lisa was discouraged, she didn't give up. One day, at a friend's party, she was introduced to a young lady who was dressed in a beautiful knitted (织的) sweater. It wasn't a fancy color, but it did have very special stitches (编织法). Lisa asked that lady if she knitted it herself after talking with her for a while. The lady said it was a work of a lady in Paris.
Lisa really loved the special stitches and wanted to include them in her designs. And then Lisa had an even braver idea. "Why not own a fashion store of my own? That way, I could design, make and sell my own clothes," she thought. So she decided to begin with that kind of sweater.
Later Lisa's friend introduced her to Madam Dean who knitted that sweater. The lady was from Armenia and she learned to knit that kind of sweater from people in her country.
Lisa drew a picture of a sweater and asked Madam Dean to knit the sweater for her. Madam Dean agreed. One week later, Lisa got the sweater. The following day after Lisa received it, she wore it to a party in the fashion industry.
Lisa was very nervous but she was lucky. Not long after the party began, her sweater drew the attention of a store owner from New York. She wanted to order forty such sweaters in two weeks. Lisa was really happy and accepted the order.
Paragraph 1 :
The next day, Lisa told the good news to Madam Dean.
